Mecum Announces The Jim Parkinson Collection at the Monterey Auction

Mecum Auctions announces it will offer the Jim Parkinson Collection at their annual Monterey Auction, Aug. 13-14, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel & Spa on the Del Monte Golf Course.

Parkinson began his automotive career in 1954 as one of the original MG dealers in Burbank, Calif. During the past 56 years, he has had more than 20 franchises in 12 locations throughout Southern California and is currently operating dealerships in Orange County, Calif., with General Motors and Nissan franchises.

"Jim has a long history on the Monterey Peninsula both as an automotive dealer and a successful amateur racer winning many races in his class during the 1950s and '60s," said President Dana Mecum. "In 1955, he raced in the Pebble Beach road race on the 17 Mile Drive circuit, and he also served as a judge on the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance with his good friend, the late Phil Hill. Jim's love for motorcars of all types has resulted in a historically significant collection of automobiles that spans some of the greatest marques in our industry."

The collection includes 13 cars - all offered at no reserve - ranging from a 1953 Nash Ambassador to a 1972 De Tomaso Pantera and a 1984 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur.

Also included in the lineup is a rare 1940 LaSalle (Lot F102) that is one of 425 ever built and one of only 28 documented remaining examples. Two different series of cars were produced during the vehicle's last year of production, including the four all-new premium 52-Series models. This LaSalle Series 52 Special Convertible Coupe used GM's new torpedo-style body and features virtually flawless Corlear Blue Iridescent blue metallic paintwork. It has a heater, defroster, clock and radio for comfort, and added equipment such as dual Guide fog lamps, bumper guards, wide whitewall tires, contrasting tan cloth power top and twin side mirrors add to this vehicle's high style.

Mecum Consigns Historically Significant Shelby Vehicles for 2010 Monterey Auction

Mecum Auctions has added three significant Shelby vehicles to its lineup for the 2010 Mecum Monterey Auction, Aug. 13-14, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort & Spa.

The first is a rare 1965 Shelby GT 350 Drag Unit (Lot S106) that boasts a 289/306 HP, a 4-Speed Transmission and a list of unique drag car features. These specially modified Drag Units - part of the GT350 drag program - were shipped to Ford drag specialists Les Ritchey's Performance Associates who prepared them to be actively raced in the Southern California circuit. Of the four Drag Units that were built in 1965, VIN #5S207 is one of only two known to exist today.

Also crossing the block at Mecum Monterey is one of the most historically significant Shelby-Mustangs: the 1965 Shelby GT350 Fastback (Lot S113) that was built as a prototype for the 1966 model year. VIN #5S319 has been authenticated by the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) as one of three 1965 GT350s used as a prototype. It features rear quarter windows, side brake cooling scoops, 1966-spec Shelby GT350 side stripes, Shelby/Cragar 15" Black accent wheels and a radio - all of which have been verified by SAAC as original to this vehicle.

Mecum will also offer the 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Roadster CSX3102 (Lot S120) - a one-of-a-kind, fully documented street car that has many competition features and is the second 427 ever built. With 17,300 miles, this Shelby Cobra has won many awards at SAAC events, including 1st place in the Popular Vote Comp Cobra Class (SAAC-s) and 2nd place finishes at SAAC-10, SAAC-14 and SAAC-18. It was also memorialized in a long since sold-out poster for "Mr. Formal Wear" - the formal wear rental business of brothers Bill and Bud Jones, who purchased the Cobra in 1971.

Mecum's Monterey Auction takes place at the luxurious Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort & Spa and cars will be displayed on the Del Monte Golf Course. The auction is open to the general public. For a complete list of vehicles, visit www.Mecum.com.

Barrett-Jackson Inaugural Orange County Auction Delivers Strong Results And Great Experience

  • 15 million total sales at inaugural auction
  • Customs and hot rods top the docket
  • More than $1 million raised for charity
  • Approximately 58,000 attend first event

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – July 1, 2010 – The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company reported more than $15 million in total sales during its inaugural Southern California automotive lifestyle event on June 25-27, 2010 in Costa Mesa, Calif. Nearly 400 vehicles including customs, classics, hot rods, restomods and original collector cars were sold at No Reserve at the OC Fair & Events Center. The auction, which attracted over 58,000 people, included ride ‘n drives by Ford and GM, Meguiar’s seminars, Ford Drifting and other exciting activities.

“As we expected, Southern California supported our first Orange County auction with amazing attendance,” said Craig Jackson, chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “Barrett-Jackson week was a whirlwind of excitement, entertainment and experiences unlike anything held in this area. From collector cars to an inaugural road rally, charity receptions and a local cruise-in, we delivered a fantastic event. We’re absolutely delighted with this year’s results, and look forward to building on this year’s success in 2011.”

During the three-day auction, nearly 400 vehicles crossed the Barrett-Jackson auction block as SPEED TV captured the action live for 18 hours. Classic cars were high on the bidders list at the auction as many were sold at top dollar. These cars included a Fathom Blue 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 convertible with matching numbers for $253,000. A 1970 Plymouth Road Runner custom two door hardtop that appeared in two of “The Fast and the Furious” films sold for $187,000. A 1967 Chevrolet Corvette convertible sold for $181,500 and the 1940 Willys custom two door coupe fetched $181,500. Jesse James’ personal 1936 Ford custom five window coupe, built at West Coast Choppers, went to a new home for $165,000.

“All eyes were on our first auction in Orange County this weekend,” stated Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Barrett-Jackson is a barometer for the collector car market and people were excited to see what trends would emerge. This auction proved true to So Cal as bidders went for classics, restomods and customs that they could cruise around in. It’s not surprising that those types of vehicles would be in such demand since Southern California is the birthplace of hot rodding.”

Barrett-Jackson auction also helped raise more than $1 million for charity at the event. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation raised $280,000, including a 1990 Darrell Gwynn Coors Extra Gold Top Fuel Dragster replica ($150,000) and a limited edition 2008 Barrett-Jackson Edition Ford Shelby GT ($130,000). The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation received over $100,000 with the sale of a 2011 Ford Mustang two door custom coupe DUB wide body. The 1970 “Project American Heroes” Chevelle SS custom coupe sold for $250,000 with all proceeds benefiting the Armed Forces Foundation.

The Main Auction Pavilion was the heartbeat of the event with crowds vying for their own piece of Barrett-Jackson Orange County inaugural auction history. The top ten cars at the Orange County auction included:

  • Lot #370 – 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 Convertible – $253,000
  • Lot #350 – 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Custom Coupe – $250,000
  • Lot #362 – 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Custom 2 Door Hardtop – $187,000
  • Lot #375.1 – 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible – $181,500
  • Lot #383 – 1940 Willys Custom 2 Door Coupe – $181,500
  • Lot #354 – 1931 Packard 840 Roadster – $170,500
  • Lot #355 – 1938 Packard Victoria Convertible – $170,500
  • Lot #382 – 1936 Ford Custom Five Window Coupe – $165,000
  • Lot #378 – 2004 Maybach MOD 62 Four Door Sedan – $154,000
  • Lot #386.1 – 1990 Darrell Gwynn Coors Extra Gold Top Fuel Dragster replica – $150,000

“Our Orange County auction was designed to tap into So Cal’s car culture and introduce more people to the hobby,” noted Jackson. “The result was a great success. About 58 percent of bidders were first time buyers to the auction scene and 57 percent were first time consignors. They’re coming to Barrett-Jackson because of the great cars and the confidence inspiring transparency that you can only find at our auctions.”

“Something for everyone” was the theme of the weekend as people strolled through Ford and GM exhibits, checking out the latest automotive toys and custom rides. The Kids Kar Zone was set up to provide bean bag tosses, a milkshake drinking contest by Ruby’s, face painting, balloon twisting and spin art, while parents sipped on wine at the Orange County Wine Society booth.

The Road Rally kicked-off the week long automotive lifestyle event on Saturday, June 19, with more than a hundred cars roaring down Bristol Street and ending at the OC Fair & Event Center with a mini car show that followed. The Father’s Day Cruise-In at Connell Chevrolet hosted 164 vehicles. First time owners and serious collectors mingled to the sounds of rock music and the smell of BBQ. President Steve Davis and Gary Bennett, vice president of consignment at Barrett-Jackson, were on hand to pass out three Barrett-Jackson Choice Awards.

The week included a special reception to celebrate the Barrett-Jackson Cancer Research Fund in Memory of Russ and Brian Jackson as well as the Childhelp Drive the Dream Charity Gala where $150,000 was raised to help abused, neglected and at-risk children. Barrett-Jackson hosted the Opening Night Party on Thursday, June 24 with models clad in the latest designs by Oscar de la Renta, Pucci, Roberto Cavalli, MaxMara and Ermenegildo Zegna during the South Coast Plaza fashion show.

“The Orange County auction was a one-of-a-kind experience that is unlike our other destinations,” added Davis. “The event’s local flair meant a relaxed atmosphere that only So Cal can provide. With tens of thousands of people in attendance over the weekend, we created a new tradition for Southern Californians to enjoy every summer. We look forward to coming back again with even more cars and high-energy entertainment.”

“Having a car up on the block from my father’s original collection will be very special for me,” said Jackson. “It’s a wonderful classic that anybody would be proud to have in their collection.”

“Thunderflite”

Lot #382.1, a 1961 Ford Thunderbird Custom Roadster “Thunderflite.” was built by world-renowned designer Dean “Dino” Arnold, and features a custom double bubble top. Painted with House of Kolors Chrome Effects, the car has a 302cid engine connected to a modified automatic transmission. The deep red interior was done by Deluxe Auto Interiors and has over 1,000 custom modifications.

“The flashy chrome, deep apple red paint and wild design of the car is perfect for our first Orange County event,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “With its unique Southern California flair, it would be great for anyone who wants to cruise Sunset Boulevard.”

The “Standard”

Barrett-Jackson has always been home to some of the world’s greatest American muscle cars and hot rods. With the inaugural OC event underway, they will live up to this reputation with some truly special cars. Called the “Hammer,” Lot #362 is a Plymouth Road Runner Custom Two Door Hardtop, updated with an all-aluminum Mopar Performance 526 cubic-inch Hemi built by Ray Barron Racing Engines. It has made appearances in the third and fourth “The Fast and the Furious” films as well as several SEMA shows.

A hot rod with a difference, the 1940 Willys Custom Two Door Coupe (Lot #383) was built to standards established by drag racers, though it is primarily intended for street use. The legendary Art Morrison chassis carries a supercharged Mopar Hemi and the finest safety and performance features, including a full roll cage. This steel pro-built hot rod is powered by 472cid Mopar HEMI engine.

The “Eccentrics”

The Barrett-Jackson team added a few twists to the docket for the 2010 Orange County event. For that collector seeking a one-of-a-kind vehicle or an unusual trophy, there are several off the wall options that should fit the bill.

A brilliant red 1928 Buick custom speedster (Lot #349) by master retro designer and builder Gary Wales hearkens back to a time when coach building was the norm when buying an automobile. With its red spoked wheels, lightweight doors and charming wooden dash, this Buick looks like the ultimate gentleman’s racer.

For many car enthusiasts attending the event, it is not unusual for Aston Martins and Bentleys to cross the block, but this year a special group will be sold that were built without engines. A 2007 Aston Martin Zer-Black Gravity Racer (Lot #645) is one of the first Aston Martin zero-emission vehicles in the company’s 97 year history. Other Gravity Racers from Aston Martin will be available in green (Lot #645.1) and white (Lot #645.2).

Three 2007 Bentleys will also be featuring Gravity Racers from Lot #646, Lot #646.1 and Lot #646.2.

America’s Sports Car

With a large number of Chevrolet Corvettes scheduled to roll across the block, Barrett-Jackson will auction many of the most exciting representatives of this iconic 58-year-old brand.

“You’d be hard-pressed to find a better selection of Corvettes, both classics and modern examples at a single venue,” said Jackson. “Orange County will be a great place to pick up one a car to enjoy on the open road or make the centerpiece of a personal collection.”

Enthusiasts will be hungry for a numbers-matching Rally Red on black 1967 Corvette convertible (Lot #358.1). This car sports a 427 tri-power V8 and a correct rear end. It was restored in 1988 and has been stored in a climate controlled showroom for over 20 years. The ‘Vette has a mere 300 miles on it since its restoration.
