Shelby American has been commemorating its 50th anniversary all year, with celebrations starting at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale in January and a planned big finish at Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Sept. 20 – 22. The Shelby American Celebration East continues the festivities with the largest gathering of Shelbys ever, during a five-day event that starts with track racing, a road rally through three states, and a celebration culminating at the Ford Nationals in Carlisle where Shelby owners can enjoy some of the rarest Shelbys ever made. Barrett-Jackson will also be making a first-ever Ford Nationals appearance with its display, where representatives will be handing out information on upcoming events.
On Friday night, June 1, the Carlisle Midway belongs solely to Team Shelby. When the infield closes for the spectators Friday evening, it opens up for the official Team Shelby Northeast 50th Celebration VIP Event. With premium catering, an extraordinary setting, live music to enjoy and numerous Shelby and Ford VIPs in attendance, it will be an exciting commemoration.
“I am honored to have been selected as a featured guest speaker at the Shelby American 50th Anniversary Celebration East,” said Davis. “Carroll Shelby, whom we already dearly miss, has been an inspiration to fans around the world and created some of the most sought after vehicles of all time. It will be an especially beautiful sight to see so many of his amazing creations gathered in one place. I look forward to honoring Mr. Shelby, his incredible cars, and his career.”
Carlisle Events is providing Team Shelby with a premium location to park 400 cars just steps from the Midway and grandstands. This prime real estate at the Ford Nationals is a highly sought after location not shared by many. Guinness World Record officials will be on hand to verify and document the 2012 Carlisle Ford Nationals / 50th Anniversary Celebration as the official largest assembly of Shelby automobiles on the planet.

Moments ago, Mecum Auctions unveiled an iconic piece of Indy 500 history owned by racing legend “The King” Richard Petty during their auction at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana. The STP-sponsored Lotus Type 56/3 Turbine Indy racecar, driven by Graham Hill at the 1968 Indianapolis 500-Mile Race was revealed in a glass case and will remain on display all week before heading to auction during Mecum at Monterey, California in August.
For the 1968 Indy 500, STP boss Andy Granatelli commissioned Colin Chapman and Team Lotus to build four cars utilizing Pratt & Whitney turbine engines and Ferguson four-wheel drive systems. Chapman and his team developed the Lotus 56, which was the most technologically advanced racecar of its era. The popularity and attention that the Lotus Turbine cars received during the Indy 500 helped to turn STP into a household name, and solidified the synergy between racing and brand marketing. After the 1968 racing season concluded, chassis 56/3 made its way to First Brands (STP) corporate headquarters where it remained in their lobby until 1996, and was then acquired by Richard Petty, who owns the car to this day.
This will be the first time an original, authentic Lotus Type 56 has been offered for sale at public auction. The 1968 Lotus Type 56/3 Turbine Indy racecar driven by Graham Hill and owned by Richard Petty will cross the auction block Friday, August 17, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. May 14, 2012 — The world lost an automotive icon, Barrett-Jackson lost a friend.
Carroll Shelby, who passed away on May 10, was more than the namesake manufacturer behind some of Barrett-Jackson’s most memorable auction moments. His persona, brilliance, and even his trademark hat, defined auction history and raised millions of dollars for charity.
“As heartbroken as I am about his passing, I’m proud to have called Carroll Shelby my friend and mentor,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. As CEO, Jackson was often beside Shelby on the block.
“My daughter, Shelby, carries his name proudly,” Jackson said. “He personified the American Dream and he embodied the passion, creativity and ingenuity that fueled a new era of automotive enthusiasm. That spirit will live on, in every American muscle car that crosses our auction block. He will forever be missed.”
Barrett-Jackson President Steve Davis, a long-time friend of Shelby’s, added, “This is a tremendous loss for the automotive industry and the Barrett-Jackson family. Throughout every one of Barrett-Jackson’s 41 years, we treasured our time with Carroll. He was at our side during some of Barrett-Jackson’s most memorable moments. But on days like today, we’re even more humbled and grateful for our countless private moments with our friend.” Davis also said, “One of the highlights of my career was working with Carroll on the Series 1 project as well as the Limited Edition Barrett-Jackson Shelby Mustang project.”
A very special Barrett-Jackson moment occurred in 2009, when boxing legend Muhammad Ali arrived at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale. Ali had admired Carroll and his cars and the two legends had the opportunity to come together at the unveiling of the Limited Edition Barrett-Jackson Ford Shelby Mustang. It was clear that these legends had a mutual respect of each other’s accomplishments.
These moments – the moments when Carroll was talking to a friend, an admirer or a collector, or taking a few minutes to sign the hat of an adoring child, or shake the hand of a lifetime fan –will be missed most.
“For us, it’s hard to imagine a Barrett-Jackson without Carroll Shelby. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Carroll’s family, friends and colleagues,” Jackson said. “Heaven better have his garage ready.”
