Barrett-Jackson Announces Clark Gable’s 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe Will Cross The Auction Block In Scottsdale

The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions
to Feature the Iconic Star’s Coupe at its 2013 Salon Collection

Scottsdale, Ariz. – (September 19, 2012) – Barrett-Jackson, the World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™, announced today that Clark Gable’s 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe will be offered at the company’s 2013 Scottsdale auction as part of the Salon Collection on January 19, 2013. Other unique vehicles will also be offered up for sale from January 13-20, 2013, under the company’s iconic quarter-mile tent.

Hailed as “the King of Hollywood”, Gable’s car will be seen for the first time at Barrett-Jackson’s Las Vegas auction at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino from September 20-22, 2012. The car was purchased by Gable himself at Mercedes-Benz of Hollywood and is considered to be one of the most celebrated two-seaters of all time.

“The response to our Salon Collection has been incredible, especially after it shattered multiple world records during its debut at Scottsdale last year,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We are so pleased to announce the Collection is now full and that the Clark Gable car will be alongside a great selection of quality, high-end, collectible vehicles.”

One of only 1,400 made, the 300SL Gullwing was created as the production version of the 1952 Le Mans-winning 300SL, and became the world’s first gasoline fuel injected production car, thanks to a Bosch mechanical fuel injection. The car has since been restored by Paul Russel and was maintained by Mercedes mechanics.

Tinsel town’s leading man’s Mercedes is equipped with fitted luggage, rare Rudge knock-off wheels and a Nardi steering wheel. In addition, the SL’s original registration solidifies the provenance of this rolling piece of Hollywood history with the signatures of William Clark Gable and his fifth wife, Kay Sprekels Gable.

The 300SL was cherished by Gable for five years before his passing in 1960, and is said to have carried some of Hollywood’s most-famous leading ladies, such as Jean Harlow, Vivien Liegh, Ava Gardner and Marilyn Monroe.

Gable’s 300SL is a stunning vehicle on its own, but it’s the pedigree that comes with it that really makes this Mercedes one-of-a-kind,” said Steve Davis, Barrett-Jackson’s President. “Coming from the prestigious Robert Howard Collection it will be an honor to have this historic vehicle crossing our auction block and we can’t wait to share it with our Las Vegas and Scottsdale audiences.”

Barrett-Jackson, the World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™, continues to be a highly anticipated auction by collectors around the world. The auction has experienced an extraordinary 2012 thus far, kicking off the exceptional season in Scottsdale with more than $92 million in sales and a record-breaking 270,000 in attendance. The success of Scottsdale carried over to Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach and Barrett-Jackson Orange County, which together generated record sales and attendance. Barrett-Jackson has also raised more than $8.7 million for national and local charities through its auctions to date in 2012.

Now, Barrett-Jackson looks forward to ending the year on a positive note with another successful auction in Las Vegas, as well as a celebratory start to the new season with the Salon Collection in Scottsdale 2013.

A new variable-pitch Dynaflow transmission utilized the stator blades changing pitch under hard acceleration, which provided quicker off-the-line acceleration. Gasoline economy was also notably improved.

The Riviera was the top model in Buicks Roadmaster line and this restored Riviera Lives up to its historic past. Fully sorted out, it is as comfortable in modern day traffic as it is on a quiet county road. We have just completed a full TLD Detail inside and out and this Riviera is now ready for a new home. Mecum Confirms Theory That Everything Is Bigger In Texas

Mecum Auctions completed their second annual Dallas Auction, held September 5-8, 2012, packing over 1,200 vehicles into The Dallas Convention Center and experienced competitive bidding from start to finish throughout the 4-day event. Total sales for the Dallas auction were $31,618,778 and are expected to easily surpass the $32 million mark once the final totals from Bid Goes On sales are factored in later this week.

The Cars of Hallbrook were presented on opening day Wednesday, with the entire sale broadcast live on Discovery’s Velocity Network. An incredible group of 96 vehicles offered exclusively with reserves, The Cars of Hallbrook brought a fantastic collection of exceptional American automobiles worthy of a stand-alone sale together with the multi-day consignment auction. “We essentially had an auction within an auction,” said President and CEO Dana Mecum. “By offering the collection on its own day within a consignment auction on our regular schedule, the cars were able to benefit from all the additional promotion, higher bidder attendance and live national TV exposure associated with our regularly scheduled event, and the results speak for themselves.”

Total sales for The Cars of Hallbrook Collection surpassed $5.2 million, with 82 vehicles going to new homes thanks to an incredible 85% sell-through rate. Topping the list of sold vehicles was a 2005 Ford GT (Lot W49) with only 1,021 miles hammering for $187,500. In fact, three cars from the Hallbrook Collection made the list of top ten sales for the entire Dallas Auction, including Lot W46, a 1938 Lincoln K Semi-Collapsible Cabriolet with coachwork by Brunn & Company, and Lot W48, a gorgeously restored 1956 Lincoln Premiere Convertible

The ensuing three days of the Dallas Auction saw huge crowds and intense bidding on a total of over 1,200 vehicles, 808 of which were hammered sold for an impressive sell-through rate of nearly 70%. The top sale price of the auction was garnered by Lot S86, a well-documented Triple Black 1967 Chevrolet Corvette 427/435 HP Convertible selling for $285,000. Coming a close second was Lot S136.1, a certified real-deal 1969 Yenko Camaro changing hands for $240,000.

The results showed that the Mecum Dallas Auction had doubled in size in just its second year, confirming that everything is bigger in Texas!

Dallas Auction 2012 Top 10 Vehicle Sales (all sales reflect hammer prices) were:

  1. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 427/435 HP (S86) at $285,000
