FORD TRI-MOTOR AIRPLANE TO MAKE FINAL FLIGHT BEFORE BEING SOLD AT BARRETT-JACKSON SCOTTSDALE

Ford Tri-Motor Plane

Historic Aircraft, One of Only 199 Built, Survived Pearl Harbor Attack

Ford Tri-Motor Plane

Scottsdale, Ariz. – Sept. 30, 2008 – As the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company prepares for its inaugural Las Vegas auction on Oct. 15-18, 2008, the company is already making waves for its 2009 event in Scottsdale, Ariz. One of the many highlights of the 38th annual automotive lifestyle event on Jan. 11-18, 2008, will be the No Reserve sale of a historic 1929 Ford 4-AT-E Tri-Motor airplane that was hit by bullets during the World War II surprise attack at Pearl Harbor. Recently restored to original specifications, the aircraft will make its final flight today before the sale when it departs from Petersburg, Va., in route to Goldsboro, N.C.

The Ford Tri-Motor will take off from Dinwiddie County Airport in Petersburg at 9 a.m. EDT. It is scheduled to arrive at Goldsboro Air Center inside Goldsboro-Wayne Municipal Airport at 10:30 a.m. EDT. Dolph Overton III, owner of the Tri-Motor and former ace for the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, will be awaiting the plane’s arrival with his family in Goldsboro. His son, Dolph Overton IV, will co-pilot the aircraft alongside legendary air show pilot Jimmy Leeward.

“Ford’s Tri-Motor airplanes played a very important role in creating the modern transportation system,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Just as he put America on wheels with the Model T ‘Tin Lizzie,’ Henry Ford created the Tri-Motor ‘Tin Goose’ airplane to help the general public realize the benefits of air travel. This particular plane has a wonderful history and everyone who loves both automobiles and aviation will be touched by its story.”

Henry Ford recognized the potential for mass air transportation after World War I and created the Tri-Motor “Tin Goose” to promote air travel. To overcome concerns of engine reliability, Ford specified three engines and added features for passenger comfort, such as an enclosed cabin. Ford Motor Company built 199 Tri-Motors from 1926 through 1933.

The Tri-Motor that will be sold at Barrett-Jackson began its historic journey in 1929 in Spokane, Wash., where it served as a passenger plane for Mamer Flying Service. It was later sold to K-T Flying Service of Honolulu and was at Pearl Harbor during the surprise military strike by the Japanese navy against the United States on Dec. 7, 1941. The Tri-Motor suffered exterior bullet holes during the attack but was quickly repaired and returned to service.

Upon returning to the mainland, it was leased by Trans World Airlines in 1949 for its 20th anniversary celebration, modified into a sprayer and fire fighting tanker and used by Johnson Flying Service in Montana to drop smoke jumpers and supplies to fire fighters. Since 1969, the plane has been privately owned and was part of the Wings and Wheels museum collection previously located in Orlando, FL.

Bob Woods supervised the majority of the Tri-Motor’s restoration at Woods Aviation in Goldsboro. This was a no-compromise restoration in which the airframe was reworked, a new interior installed and the exterior completely re-skinned. The wings were reworked and re-skinned by expert craftsman Maurice Hovious of Hov-Aire in Vicksburg, Mich. The landing gear, including the unique Johnson bar braking system, is complete and original. The original straight-laced wire wheels are fitted with tires that were re-sculpted to replicate the correct profile and tread pattern of the period. The wood paneling of the interior was also re-created. In order to match the condition of the plane when it was delivered by Ford in 1929, there were no modern avionics or communications gear added.

The plane will be sold at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale event on Saturday, Jan. 17, during SPEED’s primetime coverage.

“Barrett-Jackson has been on the cutting-edge of embracing new markets at the right time,” added Davis. “We have sold some of the most significant vehicles in the world, so it makes perfect sense to sell such an important piece of aeronautical history. Vintage planes, similar to the historic automobiles that cross our block, represent an incredible snapshot into our past and evoke passion and appreciation from collectors.”

AMAZING CARS TO BE SOLD AT NO RESERVE DURING THE INAUGURAL BARRETT-JACKSON EVENT IN LAS VEGAS

Scottsdale, Ariz. – Sept. 23, 2008 – In just three weeks, the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company will bring its renowned collector car event to Las Vegas with an amazing selection of vehicles being sold at No Reserve. From Oct. 15-18, 2008, the Mandalay Bay Events Center will be the site for collectors across the globe to bid on everything from iconic vintage race cars to a fully functional scale model train, while Barrett-Jackson’s lavish lifestyle atmosphere blends with the bright lights of the Las Vegas strip. SPEED cameras will also be on hand all three days to capture live, high-definition TV coverage of the first-time event.

“We’ve begun the countdown to our inaugural Las Vegas automotive lifestyle event,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “Following two stellar auctions in Scottsdale and Palm Beach where sales totaled more than $111 million, we’ve arranged the perfect mix of vehicles for our final 2008 event. It will be the same rousing experience that enthusiasts have come to expect from Barrett-Jackson, but with an added dynamic that only Las Vegas can deliver.”

Rare Gems
The centerpiece of the Las Vegas event will be the sale of Carroll Shelby’s first race car, a 1949 MG TC (Lot #819) that the performance legend piloted to victory in 1952. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit one of Mr. Shelby’s charities. “This MG ranks among the most significant vehicles to ever cross the Barrett-Jackson auction block,” noted Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson.

Joining the MG will be a 1957 Ford Thunderbird ‘F’ Convertible (Lot #817), an American classic and one of only 211 produced. The F-Bird was once owned by Robert McCulloch, father of the McCulloch/Paxton Supercharger, and is body-off restored with a 3-speed overdrive transmission. With only 27,000 miles on its odometer, the 1966 Chevrolet Corvette (Lot #786.1) is also a rare car. The 425 horsepower Milano Maroon coupe is highly optioned with a L72 engine and underwent a complete restoration this year.

Muscle at Mandalay Bay
Demand for top-tier muscle cars remains strong, and Barrett-Jackson will feed that demand with an offering of premium Detroit iron. One of the highlights will be a pristine 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 (Lot #816) in Grabber Blue with a 4-speed manual transmission and only 36,500 original miles. Also garnering attention will be a very rare Chevrolet Chevelle SS LS6 convertible (Lot #810), a Lime Gold 1967 Shelby GT500 (Lot #807) and a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS Convertible Pace Car (Lot #789). A 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 custom fastback (Lot #796), dubbed “The Sin City Shaker,” will certainly make noise in Las Vegas. It contains a Ford 427 S.O.H.C “Cammer” that pumps out 657 horsepower.

A new generation of rare muscle cars will be represented when a 2008 Barrett-Jackson Edition Shelby GT (Lot #819.1) crosses the block. It is No. 9 of only 100 built. As an added bonus, the interior of the coupe will be signed by the host and judges of FOX’s hit reality show, “American Idol.” All proceeds from the sale will benefit the Lili Claire Foundation, which was founded to enhance the lives of children living with Williams Syndrome, Down Syndrome, Autism and other neurogenetic disorders.

“We’ve lined up some spectacular vehicles that will appeal to fans of Detroit’s finest,” stated Davis. “And we’re proud to join forces with Lili Claire to auction the Barrett-Jackson Shelby GT. 100 percent of that winning bid will help care for some very special children and their families.”

Customs by Coddington
Custom restorations allow enthusiasts to blend the style and concept of classics with the comfort of modern technology. Barrett-Jackson has given these vehicles and their builders a stage to transform the works of art into true collector cars.

In Las Vegas, customs from late hot-rod legend Boyd Coddington will take center stage, led by a 1957 Cadillac Series 62 custom 2-door (Lot #815). Coddington built the Pink Pearl Caddy on his TV show “American Hot Rod” in collaboration with Hershey’s Chocolate for a Reese’s promotion. It is completely handcrafted with a 540cid, 650 horsepower big block Chevy engine, Turbo 400 transmission and a candy cooler in the trunk. Additional Coddington customs include a 1932 Ford Custom Roadster (Lot #791.1) and a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air built for O’Reilly Auto Parts known as “Chubster” (Lot #815.1).

Exotics
Extravagant automobiles are popular in Las Vegas, which means the crop of mid-engined exotics on the docket should have no trouble finding new homes. The group includes a 1973 De Tomaso Pantera (Lot #806) owned and customized by the original Pantera designer, Tom Tjaarda. He restored the car and designed numerous modifications for the project, including new front and rear fascias and spoilers, which he hand-sculpted to fit the car. Tjaarda also made extensive changes to the interior, which now resembles the luxurious confines of a new Aston Martin or Jaguar.

“Tom Tjaarda, who penned the Corvette ‘Rondine’ we sold in Scottsdale for $1.6 million, will join us again in Vegas to sell his personal Pantera,” added Davis. “Only at Barrett-Jackson can you bid on an exotic sports car owned by the man who designed it.”

A pair of cars that undoubtedly fit the “exotic” profile are the 1992 Jaguar XJ 220 2-door hardtop (Lot #805) and the 2003 Saleen S7 (Lot #805.1). One of 280 produced, the blue Jaguar XJ 220 is powered by a twin turbo-charged, 542 horsepower engine with a 0-60 mph time under four seconds and a top speed of 217 mph. The Saleen is one of 65 total S7′s produced, and boasts a 7.0 liter, 750 horsepower engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. It is one of only two production Saleen S7s painted Saleen Signature Red.

Extraordinary
The Barrett-Jackson team has also secured some of the most unusual vehicles in the world. The one-and-only 1918 Le Bestioni (Lot #813), a gargantuan boattail speedster, will roar across the block in Las Vegas. Le Bestioni is a stunning creation by classic car expert, Gary Wales, that harkens back to when giant, two man race cars ruled road racing circuits. Its 14-liter, 6-cylinder engine has pistons the size of two-pound coffee cans.

For collectors looking to add a train to their collection, Barrett-Jackson will auction a fully functioning scale model of a Union Pacific 484 Baldwin Engine (Lot #777), plus four Pullman cars and a half-mile of track. The 52.5-foot train can transport 36 people with its functioning coal engine. It was constructed by Daniel Boone VI, a direct descendent of legendary pioneer, Daniel Boone.

Another giant of sorts on the docket is “Thunderous Cyclops,” the world’s largest “to scale” three-wheeler. The red Honda bike stands 10-feet tall and features a 489cid, 1200 horsepower engine in front and a 1100cc, 78 horsepower Honda Shadow motorcycle engine in the rear.

“Barrett-Jackson has broadened the definition of a collector vehicle over the years,” said Davis. “We were the first to embrace muscle cars, hot rods and customs. Now, the unusual vehicles we sold, like Robosaurus and the Monster Garage cars, have opened a new genre that will expand in Las Vegas.”

100 Years of GM
General Motors will celebrate its 100th anniversary and partnership with Barrett-Jackson by auctioning 20 vehicles during the event. On Saturday evening, the auction will end with seven track-used pace cars crossing the block, including the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe Daytona Pace Car (Lot 832.2); 1999 Corvette Coupe 24 Hours of LeMans Pace Car (Lot #833); 2005 Pontiac GTO Coupe Pace Car (Lot 833.1); 2005 Corvette Convertible Indianapolis 500 Pace Car C6 #3 (Lot #833.2); 1993 Camaro Indianapolis 500 Pace Car #3 (Lot #834); 2005 SSR NASCAR Pace Roadster Pickup #3 (Lot #834.1); and 2006 Monte Carlo Coupe NASCAR Pace Car (Lot #834.2).

Rare Red and Gold 1966 Shelby GT350H Mustang Coming to Mecum St. Charles, IL Auction

The Mecum Auction at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois on October 3-5 will be the place where this Red and Gold 1966 Shelby GT350H will cross the block. Although selling a fleet of vehicles to a car rental company is hardly an unusual thing in the automotive business, nothing can quite be termed “normal” when it involves Carroll Shelby, as it did in 1966 when Shelby struck a deal with Hertz Corporation. The car around which the Shelby - Hertz deal was built was none other than the GT350, a barely-detuned street version of the race car that won the 1965 SCCA B/Production championship.

800 of the 1,000 Mustangs were given that famous Black and Gold livery, but SAAC Registry research indicates that White, Red, Green and Blue cars were built in quantities of approximately 50 each. These cars are of special interest to collectors, and the Red 1966 Hertz Shelby offered here is one of those exclusive cars.

Built with a K-code 289/306 HP V-8 and a rare 4-speed and prepared for delivery to Hertz in late 1965 by J.D. Ball Ford in Miami, the car was returned in January of 1967 to Ball, who sold it to Steve Barbieri of Fort Lauderdale. Its ownership history is fully documented. It won the Concours Driven Class at the 1994 Mustang Club of America Nationals and appeared at SAAC 19 the same year. The car is registered with the SAAC.

Rare, correct, well documented and with Hertz bona fides, this Red and Gold 1966 Shelby GT350H is an extremely valuable reminder of an improbable partnership that fascinates to this day. For more details on this car, visit the Mecum website.

The Red and Gold 1966 Shelby GT350H is another Mecum Main Attraction of an estimated 800 collectible classics that will attract a crowd of thousands to the 13th Annual Mecum St. Charles, Illinois Auction, October 3 - 5, 2008 at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, IL. The car is will be sold Saturday, October 4 as lot number S171. The general public is welcome, with tickets available at the door for $10. 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback Russ Davis Ford A/FX “Gas Ronda” Drag Car Coming to Mecum Auction

The Mecum Auction at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois on October 3-5 will be the place where the 1965 AHRA World Finals Champion 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback Russ Davis Ford A/FX “Gas Ronda” Drag Car will be sold. Late in 1964, eleven deleted hi-performance-spec 289 Mustang fastbacks were diverted engineless from the Ford assembly line to the Holman-Moody shops to be prepared for the new A/FX class that was taking drag racing by storm. Gas Ronda was one of those who received a Mustang.

Five of the cars were fitted with Ford’s rare new 427 SOHC engine, while the remaining were given the 427 Hi-Riser Galaxie engine until other SOHC or “cammer” engines could be found. Ronda received a 427 SOHC-equipped car, serial number 5F09_3802440, which he debuted at the ’65 Winternationals. The A/FX Mustangs made such a splash their first time out that Super Stock & Drag Illustrated magazine’s headline shouted, “Mustangs Run Wild at Pomona.”

Ronda’s first big win in the car came right after the Winternats at the AHRA World Finals, where he set a new A/FX class record at 10.43/134.73 mph. He went on to campaign the 427-powered racer in the A/FX class to national acclaim. The easily recognizable Poppy Red Mustang, sponsored by Russ Davis Ford in Covina, California, was a huge fan favorite and ubiquitous in the drag racing press. To this day, the dapper Ronda’s iconic factory basher remains one of the most fondly recalled sixties Ford drag racers.

This unique drag racing treasure, in as-original condition, shares company with the legendary factory Cobra and GT40 racers in an elite group of cars from the pinnacle of Ford's great motorsports championship years. For more details on this car, visit the Mecum website.

1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible to be Offered at Mecum Auction

The Mecum Auction at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois on October 3-5 will be the setting when a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air “Fuelie” convertible is sold. The ’57 Chevrolet Bel Air embodies the best of fifties-era American automotive styling, its form and details symbols of an automotive golden age. The Bel Air convertible was the showcase for Chevrolet’s styling and performance leadership. The Bel Air struck just the right chords with the public, who loved the basic car’s modern design and wide range of appearance, convenience and engine options.

Chevy got it right under the hood as well, with the new 283 cubic inch small block V8 in configurations that ranged up to the 283 horsepower Rochester fuel-injected version that gained immediate fame as the first production engine to generate 1 horsepower per cubic inch.

The 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible on offer is an extremely rare car originally equipped with the 283/283hp Fuel Injected V-8. Finished in Turquoise with two-tone Turquoise and White interior and White top, this car is fresh from an extensive, professional frame-off rotisserie restoration completed in February 2008. Much more than a cosmetic overhaul, the mechanicals were renewed as well. The engine was completely rebuilt using a new correct solid lifter cam, the fuel injection unit completely overhauled, and the 3-speed manual transmission rebuilt using new needle bearings and thrust washers.

This ’57 Fuelie convertible is exemplary in every detail. Color, interior, engine numbers, new whitewall tires and spinner hubcaps are all completely correct. Stainless and chrome trim are either restored or replaced, and tinted glass, power top, deluxe heater, backup lights and more are new and correctly date-coded.

'57 Chevys are widely considered the most well known, desirable collector cars in existence, and it just doesn't get any better than a pristine and exceptionally rare '57 Fuelie convertible. For more details on this car, visit the Mecum website.
