1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS L89 Coupe to be sold by Mecum Auction

The Mecum Auction at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois on October 3-5 will be the setting when a very popular 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS L89 Coupe goes across the block. While many Camaros exist, this is an especially fine example of one of America’s most popular cars. In the Camaro, Chevrolet had a boulevard winner and they added to their customer base by developing a performance car that took a backseat to none of its competitors of the era.

This Camaro features a very rare 375 horsepower 396 big block engine with aluminum heads. In 1969, only 311 Camaros had the L89 option, which was based on the L78 396. The engine features an 11:1 compression, a high-lift sold lifter camshaft, heavy-duty valve train, 4-boltmain bearings and a Holley yielding 800-cfm through a cross-flow aluminum manifold. This Camaro follows the minimalist philosophy to great effect, with its Daytona Yellow finish and standard black interior. A numbers-matching example, it retains its original X66-code block, aluminum heads, M21 transmission and 12-bolt rear end. It has been restored to exacting standards and the main drivetrain has been returned to its original state, pleasing discerning collectors.

While 311 similar Camaro L89 Camaros were manufactured during the 1969 model year, most examples headed for the drag racing tracks and were devoid of most options. Needless to say, the attrition rate was high during competition and to find such a pristine fully restored example is rare indeed. The cars garnered much success on the tracks, but finding a surviving example, with the original block no less, is unusual these days and this car will be a favorite with bidders and fans alike. For more details on this car, visit the Mecum website.

This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS L89 Coupe is another Mecum Main Attraction of an estimated 800 collectible classics that will attract a crowd of thousands to the 13th Annual Mecum St. Charles, Illinois Auction, October 3 - 5, 2008 at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, IL. The car is will be sold Saturday, October 4 as lot number S124. The general public is welcome, with tickets available at the door for $10. 1966 Nova SS Coupe featured at Upcoming Mecum Auction

The Mecum Auction at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois on October 3-5 will be the site of the sale of a rare 1966 Chevrolet Nova SS. Built to compete with the Ford Falcon and Plymouth Valiant for a new generation of youthful buyers, the Chevy Nova still enjoys a world-wide following. This particular car is a star with a unique history that in the Nova enthusiast community is known as “Giveaway Car Number 2”.

An extremely rare L79 327/350 HP engine and 4-speed transmission, this 1966 Nova SS was the Grand Prize in a drawing held to celebrate National Nostalgic Nova’s 10th anniversary in 1995. The Tuxedo Black beauty is a full-fledged SS model, with all the equipment offered in Chevy’s best package: special interior and exterior trim and wheel covers, Super Sport fender scripts, SS badges front and rear, bucket seats, special instrumentation, console shifter and deluxe steering wheel.

But this car has more, in the form of the most powerful non-fuel-injected smallblock in the Chevrolet lineup, the L79 327/350 HP V-8. The exclusive dual-snorkel chrome air cleaner tops off an aluminum intake fitted with a Holley 4-barrel and is flanked by chromed Turbo-fire valve covers. A special solid-lifter cam, high-flow heads and 11:1 compression complete this free-revving smallblock engine.

All that power is accompanied by surprising elegance. The Black finish is absolutely mirror-like and beautifully adorned by tasteful chrome and brightwork that extends to the brilliant wire wheel covers. The Black interior is likewise handsome and well accented. Beyond the car’s power and appearance, there is in addition the fact that its original equipment includes factory-installed Delco air conditioning and tinted glass to add comfort to the driving experience.

Multiple national prizes, original matching numbers engine and a rare and comprehensive option array combine for one of the most elegant and powerful cars ever to earn the SS designation. For more details on this car, visit the Mecum website.

1929 Infiniti Q29, “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster”, to be auctioned at Mecum Auction

The Mecum auction at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois on October 3-5 will feature the sale of a one of the most significant roadsters built in the past 14 years, the 1929 Infiniti Q29. There is no greater prize in the world of hot rodding than “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster”; conferred annually at the celebrated Grand National Roadster Show in California to the car that best exemplifies the contemporary art of the roadster. This car achieved that goal at the 1994 Oakland Roadster Show and then followed up with a “best Appearing” win at the Detroit Motorama.

The Q29 Infiniti Flyer Show Rod was hand built by Joseph MacPherson for the Oakland Roadster Show. MacPherson engaged famed California rodders Art and Mike Christman to bring their skill and experience to the project. The Christman brothers had a long history of building great roadsters and were able to attract a corps of other eminent craftsmen to make the car what it ended up being – America’s Most Beautiful Roadster! In the course of the project, the team included not only the Christman brothers, but also Steve Davis, Squeak White, Junior Conway, Tony Nancy and Phil Remington. As the car developed, the a local Infiniti representative stepped in with the Q45 engine and first Japanese-powered AMBR-winning rod was born.

Tom Mayfield and Bill Larzelere did the final prep and detail the night before the 1994 Oakland Roadster Show, while MacPherson hosted a celebration party for his team and families. The next day the car rocked the hot rodding world by winning every award at the show: best paint, interior, engineering and, of course, the coveted “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster. Hot Rod Magazine’s very own Gray Baskerville once said it was impossible to adequately present this masterpiece, but Mecum Auctions will do its best when it is featured at Pheasant Run this October. For more details on this car, visit the Mecum website.

1969 Chevrolet Corvette AA/GS Drag Racer on the block at Mecum Auction

This very special competition 1969 Corvette is one of those cars that makes the blood run hot, your fingers itch to grab the steering wheel and head down the quarter-mile track. In the 1960s, the heyday of gassers at the drag strips, these cars excited drivers and fans alike. The car being offered at the Mecum October St. Charles auction is an excellent example of what made it all so exciting. Yes, it’s a Hemi (a 392 bored out to 454 cubic inches) and there are still a number of those around, but not many with 1,247 horsepower! Coupled with a B&M automatic 3-speed transmission, this beauty really laid the rubber down.

This 1969 Corvette has a full history, reaching back to the barnstorming days when it was known, in a previous incarnation as “Goldfinger.” The car was re-bodied from the original Ford Anglia to the 1969 Corvette. Steve Korney then raced it across the country in the Stone Woods & Cooke livery, turning a career best time of 8.20 and 172 mph – burning gas – and 6.70/220 on nitro. It was a "performer" in every sense of the word!

The car was retired at the end of the 1975 season and stored in California for thirty years; kept fresh by regular starting and running through the gears. It is now fully restored, to Korney’s great pleasure and all the original components have been retained. The car has been returned its original paint scheme, colors and lettering. It promises to be a real hit at the popular vintage drags and fans will be excited to see a car that gave power a new meaning in the gasser arena.

The 1969 Chevrolet Corvette AA/GS Stone Woods & Cooke Gasser is another Mecum Main Attraction of an estimated 800 collectible classics that will attract a crowd of thousands to the 13th Annual Mecum St. Charles, Illinois Auction, October 3 - 5, 2008 at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, IL. "No Reserve" Explained
Most cars sold at a Mecum auction have a "Reserve" price; the seller has set a minimum price for the sale of the car and the bidding must meet or exceed that price for the car to sell. A car with a "No Reserve" price is one where the highest bid, regardless of the amount, will buy the car. At a Mecum auction, the seller decides if they want to sell the car with or without a reserve price.

Good Turnout Graces Mecum Auction at the 35th Annual Corvette & Classic Chevy Show

Not even a home Ohio State Football game could keep the crowds away from the Second Annual Mecum Auction at the 35th Annual Corvette & Classic Chevy Show, held Saturday, September 6th at Bob McDorman Chevrolet in Canal Winchester, just outside of Columbus, Ohio. Again this year, portions of the auction’s proceeds will be donated to Nationwide Children’s Hospital of Columbus.

“There were times during the auction where the 250 chairs we had put out weren’t enough,” said Dana Mecum, president of Mecum Auction. “Attendees got to see Bob McDorman’s special car collection and a great afternoon of auction excitement, all while helping Nationwide Children’s Hospital,” he concluded.

A highlight of the show picked up on the medical theme. An Ohio couple purchased a rare ambulance, a 1962 Chevrolet Corvair, serial number 1. They had been in attending the show and when they learned that the ambulance, which had been part of Bob McDorman’s personal collection, was coming across the block, they bid and won. Their motivation for the purchase? Their son, a doctor, is being married in 2009 to – another doctor. The parents plan to have the ambulance incorporated into the wedding day.

1969 Plymouth Road Runner Hardtop to be sold by Mecum Auction

The October Mecum Auction in St. Charles, Illinois will see a special order, limited production, 1969 Road Runner cross the block. The Road Runner was Plymouth’s answer to the problem of increasing size and weight of muscle cars in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. This car, driven by the same owner for almost four decades, is virtually a racecar, being a competition-ready lightweight special. The car was recently purchased after staying at home for almost it’s entire life and the new owner is offering it in pristine condition.

This Road Runner features a 390HP 440 CI engine with the original M code automatic transmission. Creature comforts were left off the factory option list as these cars were made to go! The restoration work is outstanding and over 1,000 hours are documented in a museum quality rotisserie project. The original sheet metal was refinished in the original and correct High Impact R4 Red and the white interior, while spartan, is back to its original peak condition. The car was recently awarded Editor’s Choice and Best of Show in the All Mopars at Moroso event by Andy Bolig of Mopar Muscle Magazine.

This 1969 Road Runner is very special, one of only 227 made in 1969. It is a rare one-owner 440 Six-Pack, features a lift-off hood, manufactured without undercoating, wheel caps, trim, heater or radio. It has its original sheet metal, number matching drivetrain, and retains its original broadcast sheet, fender tag, and title. This is a beautifully restored example of an original very special car. It promises to be a showstopper. For more details on this car, visit the Mecum website (www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CH1008-72405)
