LINKED TO FAMED BARRETT-JACKSON COLLECTOR CAR AUCTIONS PARTICIPATION UP MORE THAN 10-FOLD SINCE 2005 LAUNCH
Thursday, March 11, 2010 – SPEED Fantasy Bid, where viewers watching the live broadcast of the standard-setting Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auctions on SPEED are encouraged to test their skill at predicting the final auction sale price on a variety of collector cars and vehicles throughout the course of the auction, has been named a finalist for a 2009 Cablefax Best of the Web award in the Games category.
Launched in 2005, SPEED Fantasy Bid () recorded 50,000 bids in its inaugural year. In 2010, almost 700,000 Web and wireless SMS text bids were cast in conjunction with the season-opening January auction in Scottsdale, Ariz.
“Fantasy Bid has become a franchise for SPEED,” said Kevin Annison, SPEED VP of Digital & Interactive Media. “It continues to be our most successful multi-platform gaming initiative and continues to exceed our expectations every year. The game generates a lot of traffic to our Web site and mobile platform. With almost 700,000 Fantasy Bids over a four-day period, there is no question that fans love to play along while watching the great Barrett-Jackson action SPEED.”
With SPEED Fantasy Bid, the network randomly picks one car per hour to designate as the Fantasy Bid car. Viewers have no idea which cars are picked until each car is announced and the fantasy bidding begins. This prohibits fans from researching price and forces them to rely on their knowledge of the market and their gut feelings in the heat of the moment. When the Fantasy Bid vehicle reaches a pre-determined point in the staging area, the LIVE SPEED television broadcast goes to a remote camera shot and a SPEED field reporter gives a quick walk-around and basic stats for the Fantasy Bid car. As soon as he is done with the preview, participants are instructed to submit their Fantasy Bids for that car on SPEEDtv.com or text their bid via SMS to SPEED3 (773333).
The fantasy bidding period continues until the car rolls onto the actual auction block (approximately 10 minutes). At that point the fantasy bidding is closed and the actual auction process proceeds without interruption. When the car is sold the final sale price is immediately entered into the SPEEDtv.com game engine and the scores are calculated based on whose Web/SMS bids are closest to the final price without going over. In case of a tie the bid time code determines the winner.
Prizes are awarded for each car to the player with the closest bid. Then points are awarded to each bidder based on how far away from the final sale price they were. These points are added together for each player for each car played. Prizes are then awarded for the daily points leader and the overall points leader at the end of the auction.
Additionally, SPEED wraps a number of interactive components around the Fantasy Bid game, live multi-camera angle streaming, viewer chats, photo galleries and a collector car trivia application that generates some of the highest traffic levels to SPEEDtv.com, SPEED Mobile SMS campaigns and branded sponsorship opportunities.
In February, SPEEDtv.com recorded 1.3 million unique visitors, up 40 percent from a year ago and the highest single Web traffic month in the history of the network.
The next SPEED Fantasy Bid game will be run in conjunction with the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction from the South Florida Fairgrounds in Palm Beach, Florida on April 1-3. SPEED’s multi-day coverage of the event begins April 1 at noon ET. For more information on the auction, please visit www.barrett-jackson.com.
Winners of Cablefax Best of Web awards will be announced at a luncheon in New York City on April 28.

- Barrett-Jackson will sell the Serial Number 350 2011 GT350 at No Reserve on April 3
- The 2011 Shelby GT350 was unveiled at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale event in January
- Carroll Shelby will drive the car prior to delivery at Las Vegas factory
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Feb. 26, 2010 – Shelby American, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc. (CSBI:PK), will sell serial number 350 2011 GT350 at No Reserve during the 8th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Palm Beach. The American muscle car will be part of the automotive lifestyle event April 1-3, 2010, at the Americraft Expo Center at the South Florida Fairgrounds. SPEED will broadcast more than 22 hours of live, high-definition TV coverage of the auction.
“Over the past several years, we’ve offered several prototypes, concepts and special serial numbered contemporary collector cars to the public, which has been a significant break from the traditional approach that car makers once followed with such important cars,” said Barrett-Jackson Chairman/CEO, Craig Jackson. “At one time, it was common for these cars to be destroyed or sold to industry insiders instead of being available to the general car collector hobby. The automakers have begun to turn to us as the best, most democratic way to offer these cars.”
The Shelby team unveiled a supercharged concept version of the Mustang-based 2011 Shelby GT350 at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale in January to honor the 45th anniversary of the first GT350 and first Shelby big block Cobra. It was an immediate hit when Carroll Shelby and his team brought back the famous nameplate after more than 40 years.
“There was a great deal of pent up demand for the first GT350 since the 1970 model year,” stated Amy Boylan, president of Shelby American. “We chose to introduce the car at Barrett-Jackson because the people who attend their events are among the most passionate car enthusiasts in the world. Thus, we will reward that loyalty by offering a very special serial number to their bidders.”
The Shelby GT350 is a post title program; a customer purchases a car from a local Ford Dealer, which is turned into a GT350 by the Shelby American Team. A limited number will be built in the 2011 model year. A Ford Mustang GT can be dropped shipped by a Ford dealer to Shelby’s Las Vegas facility for conversion or a customer can arrange to have a properly specified car transported to the factory.
“Because 2011 Ford Mustang GT production will begin about the same time as the auction, we’re going to sell the rights to the serial number 350 car,” added Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “The GT350 will be built in Las Vegas when the base car becomes available and include a host of important options. In addition, Carroll said that he will personally drive the car before it is delivered to the lucky bidder at the Shelby American factory. This will truly be a special, milestone collector car”
Barrett-Jackson’s annual Palm Beach event continues to grow in importance and has become a fixture in South Florida. Last year, Barrett-Jackson recorded more than $20 million in sales and welcomed over 55,000 attendees in Palm Beach; the company also raised more than $1.5 million for various local and national charities during the 2009 Palm Beach auction.
Customers interested in a Shelby GT350 should contact Roger Sorel at (702) 942-7325 or log onto www.gt350.shelbyamerican.com.

- 17 vehicles crossed the block for charity
- Top charity seller was a 2011 Ford Mustang GT glass roof pace car for $300,000
- Darrell Gwynn’s 1990 Coors Extra Gold top fuel dragster replica was sold and donated back twice to raise $410,000
- Craig Jackson launches the Russ & Brian Jackson Cancer Research Fund
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Feb. 1, 2010 – The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company helped raise nearly $4.5 million for various charities during the 39th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale Jan. 18-24, 2010. Funds were gathered from the sale of 17 vehicles consigned by event sponsors, charities and generous Barrett-Jackson customers. Barrett-Jackson does not collect fees or commissions on vehicles sold for charity, which amounted to nearly $400,000 in waived fees.
Barrett-Jackson kicked off its charitable efforts in Scottsdale with the Childhelp Drive the Dream™ gala on Jan. 16. This star studded event was attended by over 700 people. Through a commitment for matching funds by Westminster International Humanitarian Trust, Childhelp was able to raise well over $1.5 million with more funds still pouring in. The charitable efforts of Barrett-Jackson continued throughout the week with multiple charity cars being auctioned. Many of them were captured live on SPEED.
“Barrett-Jackson has a strong commitment to helping charities raise money by providing time during our auction and waiving our commissions and fees,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “This year, our sponsors like Ford, General Motors and SPX, as well as our customers, really stepped up and donated some great collector cars for auction. Our customers have great hearts and show it by bidding on charity cars for worthy causes.”
The leading charity car was a 2011 Ford Mustang GT glass roof pace car donated by Ford Motor Company that sold for $300,000 to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. On Feb. 14, 2010, the new pony car will be the first Ford vehicle in 40 years to pace the famed Daytona 500. Another top charity car was a 2008 Chevrolet Corvette coupe limited edition #427 sold for $200,000 by General Motors. Before the hammer fell, four other bidders donated an additional $50,000, increasing the total charity amount to $250,000. All proceeds from the sale were donated to the American Red Cross to help fund relief efforts in earthquake-stricken Haiti.
One of the most rousing charity sales took place when Darrell Gwynn’s 1990 Coors Extra Gold top fuel dragster replica crossed the block. The initial winning bid sky-rocketed to $200,000, but the new owner asked that the car be re-entered into the auction immediately and his bid donated to the benefiting charity, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. The dragster then sold for $110,000, only to be donated back and sold again for $100,000, making for a total donation of $410,000.
“There’s no mistaking when a charity car crosses the Barrett-Jackson block,” said Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson. “There’s a certain energy and electricity in the air that comes from people wanting to help others. Car collectors and enthusiasts are special people, and they proved that once again this year in Scottsdale by helping raise nearly $4.5 million dollars at a time when charities around the globe need it most. Barrett-Jackson customers have hearts of gold.”

“Barrett-Jackson remains the heartbeat and bellwether of car collecting,” noted Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson. “From events like our downtown city of Scottsdale Road Rally and Ford Family Value Day benefiting Cox Charities to on-site ride and drives and various exhibitors, people come here to celebrate the automotive culture and the passion of the hobby. But most of all, they love Barrett-Jackson because it’s all about the cars. And with nearly 1,200 vehicles all selling at No Reserve, this year’s docket was our best ever.”
New bidders continue to make Barrett-Jackson their launching pad, with 40 percent of them first timers. The consignor pool continues to have fresh faces, as 35 percent were selling at Barrett-Jackson for the first time.
“The influx of new buyers and consignors at our events is why there is such a diverse mixture of cars at Barrett-Jackson,” explained Davis. “Our top ten list includes a blend of classics, muscle cars, customs, new model year collector cars, Cobras and even an airplane.”
Away from the auction block, the Barrett-Jackson lifestyle experience in Scottsdale was stronger than ever. Sponsors Ford and General Motors hosted their popular ride and drives, while The Garage at Barrett-Jackson™ sponsored by Stone Rose Lounge provided an exclusive setting with drinks and music for attendees. The evenings found The Garage at Barrett-Jackson™ packed with late night revelers enjoying this on-site hot spot. It was also the venue for fashion shows, which have become a popular segment of the Barrett-Jackson event. Auction goers were also treated to collector car seminars, health screenings, cooking demonstrations inside the Scottsdale Fairmont Lifestyle Pavilion and celebrity appearances by Lee Iacocca, Carroll Shelby and Jordin Sparks, among others.
On a social media front, Barrett-Jackson experienced a phenomenal 27,125,000 page views beginning one month prior to the event and including auction week. The company also added nearly 4,000 Facebook followers, 700 Twitter followers and 700 forum members during the same period.
“From ethics and transparency to social media initiatives, Barrett-Jackson will continue to fuel growth and build trust in the collector car hobby,” added Jackson. “This is a vital period in car collecting, where buyers and sellers are smart, well informed and know exactly what they want. With the market strong and the hobby more popular than ever, it certainly is an exciting time to be in the game.”
Barrett-Jackson has begun accepting consignment applications for its 8th annual Palm Beach auction. The event will be held at The Americraft Expo Center at the South Florida Fairgrounds April 1-3, 2010.
All auction prices, excluding charity vehicles, include buyer’s premium. The preliminary results in this release are unaudited.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Jan. 22, 2010 – The 39th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction is underway in Scottsdale through Jan. 24, 2010 at WestWorld. As a record-breaking storm rumbled through Arizona on Thursday, Barrett-Jackson company officials, employees and volunteers joined forces to ensure the safety of all auction participants, spectators, and the more than 1,200 collector cars in town for the event.
“Our thoughts and concern are with all the collector car enthusiasts in the Scottsdale area who experienced the terrible storm yesterday,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We are relieved to hear that no serious injuries were suffered by anyone attending any of the local auctions.”
A state of emergency was declared by Arizona’s Governor Jan Brewer as the huge winter storm rolled across Arizona from early Thursday afternoon late into the night. Tornado watches and warnings were issued in various locations in the greater Phoenix area, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety confirmed that a tornado touched down in North Scottsdale near the Loop-101.
“As the storm approached Thursday morning, we met with city and county officials, as well as representatives from the local police and fire departments to coordinate our plans to prepare for the high winds and rain on the way,” continued Jackson. “Our crews mobilized immediately to inspect all aspects of our auction site, check the tents and poles, and strategically place additional equipment that might be needed during the storm.”
The facilities at Barrett-Jackson weathered the storm well, and no serious damage was sustained to any tent, structure, or auction vehicle located on the event site. Dozens of operations crew members joined together with customers and auction spectators who pitched in to help prepare for the wind and rain.
“It was one of the most incredible displays of teamwork I’ve ever witnessed,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “As soon as we knew all of our employees and auction participants were safe, we immediately turned our attention to protecting all these amazing collector cars. I am thrilled to report that none of the cars sustained any serious damage during the storm, and we are busy this morning getting them cleaned and detailed and ready to continue rolling across the block through the weekend.”
Barrett-Jackson sold 243 cars on Thursday, and the auction continued without interruption even during the most intense moments of the storm. Inside the main auction arena, a 9-story structure designed to withstand sustained winds in excess of 90 mph, auction participants were mostly unaware of the storm raging outside.
“As a showing of our concern and support, we will be sending meals over to the other local auction site where the crews are working on cleanup this morning,” continued Davis. “We will also be working hard to demonstrate our gratitude to the fantastic staff and customers here at Barrett-Jackson who always rise to meet the challenges of any occasion and make us so proud to be a part of this incredible collector car hobby.”
