Mecum Offers Antique Wooden Boats at 2010 Monterey Auction in August

Four classic, ultra-rare wooden boats are up for bid at the second annual Mecum Monterey Auction, August 13-14, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort & Spa.

Mecum will auction a desirable 1940 Chris-Craft "Barrelback" series boat powered by the A-120A race engine - a 375-horsepower V8. One of only two Chris-Crafts delivered with this engine, the rare boat is the fastest and largest model in the highly collectible Chris-Craft series.

Once a "thrill ride" boat on Lake Arrowhead, Calif. in the 1940s and '50s, this wooden boat was the top-of-the-line Chris-Craft model at its time. It underwent a comprehensive restoration in 2007 that included the installation of original-style instruments, new planking, chrome plating and leather upholstery in the original color and style. Features unique to this model are the Birdseye maple dash, emerald green upholstery and marbleized "4-wire" bango steering wheel. The 1940 Chris-Craft has won numerous awards, including Best of Show Over 23', First Place Over 23' and Best Chris-Craft at the Tahoe Yacht Club Concours d'Elegance. This collector boat has clocked only 15 hours of use since it was restored.

Three additional investment-grade boats will be up for auction at Mecum Monterey, including a 29' 1922 Hacker housing a 400 horsepower Liberty V12 Aircraft engine; a 29' 1929 Hackercraft Dolphin Deluxe, which is one of only nine left in the world; and an 18' 1995 Chris-Craft Cobra, one of only 106 models ever produced and famous for its unique gold tail fin.

"It's the state-of-the-art craftsmanship and attention to detail that allows these famous collectable boats to hold their value for generations," said President Dana Mecum. "We're excited to offer enthusiasts worldwide a chance to appreciate the legacy of these boats at our Monterey event."

Mecum's two-day Monterey Auction takes place at the luxurious Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort & Spa. Cars and boats will be displayed outside on the beautiful Del Monte Golf Course, while the bidding arena will be staged under a white auction tent. The auction is open to the general public. Dana Mecum Preserves Indy Automotive History, Vintage Race Cars

Dana Mecum has a passion for Indianapolis and cars. He's a lifelong racing enthusiast, former racer and president of the club that preserves the most dominant Indy racers of all time. He has owned some of the most famous cars ever built in central Indiana.

Indianapolis is the birthplace of more than 50 automobile marques. Legends like Duesenberg (1920-1937), Stutz (1912-1935) and the first car to win the Indianapolis 500 - the Marmon (1902-1933) - were all built in this city. Since starting the Mecum Collector Car Auction Company in 1988, Dana Mecum has owned many of them. And although his personal collection changes frequently, if it's a significant American automobile Mecum has either owned it or auctioned it to a happy buyer.

Mecum's fondness for Indianapolis in May runs deep. His father was a national racing champion, and Mecum himself raced in the IMSA series at famous race courses throughout the 1980s. This racing history inspired his personal passion for collecting vintage open wheeled American race cars.

The crown jewel in his collection is the fastest qualifying car of 1935: the Gilmore Special Miller, which was the first car to break the 120 MPH average lap speed barrier. A 120.736 MPH average put Rex Mays on the pole. This vehicle is a great example of the Miller-engineered racers that won at Indianapolis 12 times and dominated the 500 for decades. As president of the Harry A. Miller Club, Mecum is committed to preserving vintage race cars.

"The club has more than 250 race car owners and aficionados whose mission is to enjoy and honor vintage Indy cars and the legacy of Harry A. Miller, whose engines dominated American oval-track racing for nearly half a century," said Mecum.

Mecum's love for vintage race cars is an extension of his overall passion for the automotive industry, which he showcases this week as he brings his 23rd Annual Original Spring Classic Auction to the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

As one of countless events taking place during race month in Indianapolis, the must-attend 2010 Original Spring Classic Auction has grown to become the world's largest collector car auction, featuring 1,750 collectible vehicles, racers and muscle cars up for sale. The event, which has doubled in size since 2006, runs May 19-23 at the fairgrounds.

"We anticipate more than 25,000 buyers, sellers, enthusiasts and spectators to attend our event and contribute to the local Indianapolis economy while in town for the five-day auction," Mecum explained. "In fact, our travel department has booked an amazing 15,000 hotel room nights for that week with attendees coming in from nearly every state, plus Canada, Australia and the U.K. High-level journalists from major consumer magazines like Autoweek, Hot Rod and Sports Car Market will also be in the Indianapolis market to cover this highly visible event."

Part of the Original Spring Classic Auction's popularity can be attributed to Mecum's television show "Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars & More" that airs on Discovery Communications' HD Theater during select Mecum events. Mecum was the first auction to broadcast in High Definition, creating a vivid window into the world of classic car buying. Four days of "Mecum Auto Auction" programming will air on HD Theater during this year's Original Spring Classic event, as well as special extended coverage on the Discovery Channel Saturday, May 22, from 2-3 p.m. ET.

The Original Spring Classic Auction is open to the general public and tickets are available at the door for $15. Consignment, bidder, event and accommodation information is available online at https://www.mecum.com or by calling 815.568.8888.

Charlie’s Angels Race Cars, ’69 Mercedes-Benz from "The Hangover" Up For Sale

Automobiles have long been a vital element on the big screen, even serving a starring role in movies and television series from time to time. Now, Mecum Auctions is giving car lovers a chance to own some famous vehicles when they offer 61 cars from the Cinema Vehicle Services Collection at the 23rd Original Spring Classic Auction, May 19-23, 2010, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Cinema Vehicle Services, located in North Hollywood, Calif., has been a major supplier of on-camera vehicles since 1976. The company has custom built vehicles for such television series as "A Team" and "The Dukes of Hazzard," as well as feature films like "Die Hard," "Terminator" and "Knight Rider." Cinema Vehicle Services is offering a select group of both its on camera-used vehicles as well as its private collection.

Among the vehicles set to cross the block during Mecum's five-day auction are four purpose-built race cars designed for Columbia pictures "Charlie's Angels" movie (Lots W255, W255.1, W255.2, W255.3). The tube chassis racers are powered by mid-mounted Chevrolet ZZ4 crate engines and automatic transmissions by Trans Axle Engineering. The cars, which are being sold on bill of sale as movie props, are not warranted as operational vehicles.

Mecum will also offer two 427 Shelby Cobra Kirkham Body Shells (Lots W188, W189) custom built for the 2008 movie "Iron Man." One aluminum shell was damaged, as planned, during the filming in the main scene showing Iron Man learning to fly. The second survived unscathed. Both Shelby Cobra shells will be sold on bill of sale.

The unmistakable 1973 Chevrolet El Camino (Lot W222) that played an omnipresent role in the NBC hit television series "My Name is Earl" will also go up for sale. Featuring red paint with a borrowed blue driver's door and primered hood, this El Camino is a genuine 454 automatic/air vehicle that has been maintained in peak running order. And fans of the recent blockbuster "The Hangover" will instantly recognize the 1969 Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet (Lot T261) developed as one of two "beauty" cars for the makers of this summer comedy. While it wasn't subjected to an endless stream of abuse like the film's actors, this Mercedes does enjoy the distinction of having taken Mike Tyson's pet tiger for a ride. It is scheduled to go up for bid Thursday, May 20, at 8:25 p.m.

The Original Spring Classic Auction features more than 1,750 vehicles and a variety of collectible neon signs and automobilia up for bid. To view a complete list, visit https://www.mecum.com. The auction, held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, will be broadcast live on Mecum's popular television series, "Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars & More" on HD Theater - Discovery Communications' first 24-hour high-definition cable network, offering compelling real-world and motorized content. It will take place in the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion, with tickets available at the door for $15.

Mecum Offers Unique Riva Super Aquarama at Indy Spring Classic Auction

Boat aficionados and collectors worldwide will appreciate the rare 1970 Riva Super Aquarama (Lot S117.1) up for bid on Saturday, May 22, at Dana Mecum’s 23rd Original Spring Classic Auction in Indianapolis, Ind.

This antique wood Riva, hull #393, was specially built for New Yorker Ernst Petschek on May 25, 1970, which was the last year that Carlo Riva owned the Riva Yacht company. Petschek preferred the closed rear deck of the Riva Tritone boats – a predecessor to the Aquarama – so he paid Riva dealer Monaco Boat Service a 5% premium to have this unique Aquarama custom built with a closed rear deck. It is believed to be the only closed rear deck produced of the series.

The Riva Super Aquarama features the original twin Chevrolet 350 HP V8 big block engines that were rebuilt to factory specs and a lobster red vinyl interior. It has extensive documentation that includes copies of the original bill of sale, Petschek’s passport and factory paperwork to substantiate the engine numbers. Copies of the Riva Owner’s Manual also will be provided.

“Regardless of the current economic environment, the value of Riva boats has steadily increased over the years, as evidenced by another Aquarama we sold at our recent January auction for $775,000,” said President Dana Mecum. “Whether you plan to use this boat daily or preserve it in a climate-controlled facility, it is a world-class investment that will no doubt continue to appreciate over time.”

Petschek owned the boat until he sold it in July 1971 to Jacques Francois of Belgium, who later sold it back to Monaco Boat Service in 1982. On Dec. 9, 1982, the Aquarama was sold to new owners at Lake Tahoe. It was purchased by the current owner in June 2005 in Minnesota, where it underwent a mild restoration. This Riva has been meticulously maintained its entire life.

The Riva Super Aquarama joins more than 1,750 vehicles up for bid at Mecum’s annual Spring Classic Auction. To view a complete list, visit www.Mecum.com.

Dana Mecum's 2010 Original Spring Classic Auction stakes its claim as the world's largest collector car auction this year with over 1,750 collector cars crossing the auction block at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. HD Theater's MECUM AUTO AUCTION: MUSCLE CARS AND MORE captures all of the high-octane action live from Wednesday, May 19 through Saturday, May 22, as Dana Mecum and his amazing team auctions off high-end muscle cars, timeless classics and rare exotics to the highest bidders. Since the Spring Classic Auction is packed with one-of-a-kind collector cars, Discovery Channel is going live with MECUM AUTO AUCTION: MUSCLE CARS AND MORE on Saturday, May 22 from 2-3 PM ET.

"Mecum was the first auction to broadcast in HD, giving the public a behind-the-scenes look at the collector car auction world like never before," said Dana Mecum, president of Mecum Auto Auctions. "To have the opportunity to have HD Theater's production of MECUM AUTO AUCTION: MUSCLE CARS AND MORE to air on Discovery Channel will help us expand our viewership. As one of the most widely distributed cable networks in the United States, Discovery Channel's one hour special on Saturday, May 22 gives car enthusiasts who don't have access to high-definition television a chance to experience a Mecum auction."

Discovery Channel's Saturday afternoon special presentation features some of the most sought after collector cars at the auction, including Harley J. Earl's 1963 Corvette (Lot S116), which is considered by many experts to be one of the most valuable and historically significant Corvettes ever built. This thoroughly unique and one-of-a-kind Corvette was presented to Earl as a gift from his colleagues at General Motors as an acknowledgement for the enormous leadership and influence the styling mastermind brought to GM between 1927 and 1958. Earl's impact on America's automotive industry during his tenure as the design genius at GM can not be overstated. His incredible flair for innovation and bold style resulted in numerous design breakthroughs, such as aircraft inspired tailfins on the iconic Cadillacs of the late 1940s and 1950s and the birth of America's most enduring and revered sports car, the Corvette. So great was his contributions to American automotive culture that the trophy presented to the winner of NASCAR's Daytona 500 bears his name. Other historically significant cars being auctioned off during Discovery Channel's special presentation include one of eight 1969 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air III convertibles (Lot S120) and a 1965 Shelby GT350 Fastback (Lot S106).
