The windy city welcomed Mecum Auctions with an exceptional sale and enormous crowds at the Schaumburg Convention Center in Schaumburg, Ill., this past weekend. With 965 cars crossing the block throughout the three-day event, 615 hammered sold for a 64 percent sell-through rate and $18,634,223 in sales. The one-of-a-kind personal driver of Corvette’s original designer Harley J. Earl led auction sales with a hammer price of $1.5 million.
Chicagoland was abuzz with Mecum in town and bidders and spectators filled the Schaumburg Convention Center to near capacity to take part in the action. Record numbers of registered bidders in attendance translated to very strong individual sales resulting in nearly $7 million in growth from last year’s Chicago-area auction.
The Harley Earl Corvette (Lot S110), a 1963 General Motors styling car, took top honors at $1.5 million, and rightfully so as the one-of-a-kind Sting Ray gifted by GM to one of the most influential automobile stylists in the world. At a sale price of a half-million, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (Lot S135.1) took the second seat in the top ten sales. As number 23 of just 69 built that year, the ZL1 has been restored to its original factory specifications and presents as an excellently documented example. Coming in as the third top sale was a 2005 Ford GT (Lot S219). A one-owner car with a mere 2,047 miles on the odometer, this American power-house supercar sold for a hearty $240,000.
The complete top 10 sales list from the Chicago auction includes (all individual sales reflect hammer prices):
1. 1963 Harley J. Earl Corvette (Lot S110) at $1,500,000
2. 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (Lot S135.1) at $500,000
3. 2005 Ford GT (Lot S219) at $240,000

5. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (Lot S233) at $135,000
6. 1968 Dodge Hemi Dart Lightweight (Lot S116.1) at $125,000
7. 1969 Pontiac Trans Am (Lot S151) at $118,000
8. 1962 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (Lot S157) at $110,000
9. 2013 Chevrolet COPO Camaro (Lot S174) at $105,000

Go baby go. That was the phrase on everybody’s lips at Mecum’s Indianapolis 2013 auction where bidders determined the worth of the “Gone in 60 Seconds” movie star car known as Eleanor to be a cool $1 million. Now, another one of the movie’s “hero” cars, VIN #7R02C173895 is set to cross Mecum’s block at the Schaumburg Convention Center this Saturday, Oct. 12 at Mecum’s Chicago 2013 auction.
Built by Cinema Vehicle Services specifically for the 2000 remake of a true cult classic, this 1967 Ford Mustang Eleanor (Lot S178) is one of only three used as “hero” cars during the filming of the movie in scenes involving the actors. An iconic trend-setter that has inspired countless replicas, the car features all of the signature Eleanor pieces including the distinctive two-tone Silver and Charcoal paint and the go-baby-go shifter, all put there by the builder who is including a letter of authenticity with the sale. Eager to consign this Eleanor with Mecum, the current owner shipped the car to Chicago from his residence in the United Kingdom via air transport to take part in the upcoming auction. Following Mecum’s Indianapolis sale, the question on everyone’s mind is “Will this Eleanor hero car become the next million-dollar Mustang?”
Eleanor will cross the block along with nearly 1,000 other coveted vehicles at Chicagoland’s only collector and classic car auction this Oct. 10-12. Doors to the auction open each day at 8 a.m. Portions of all three days will be broadcast live on Discovery’s Velocity Network in addition to a live stream of the entire auction presented by Mecum at www.mecum.com. Las Vegas, NV. – October 3, 2013 – Barrett-Jackson The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™ announced today that it helped raise over $2.2 million for local and national charities during the 6th annual Las Vegas auction at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Sept. 26-28, 2013, bringing the total amount the company has raised to date to over $57 million. Funds at the automotive lifestyle event were gathered through the sale of five collector vehicles, crowd donations and an emotional reunion with Siegfried & Roy that helped benefit their charity, The SARMOTI Foundation. One hundred percent of all proceeds raised by Barrett-Jackson go directly to the charity.
Barrett-Jackson kicked off its charity auctions on Thursday afternoon with a special military tribute and the sale of Lot #3000, a 2012 Shelby GT500 “Super Snake” which brought $500,000, with all proceeds benefiting Wounded Warriors Family Support. The sale was accompanied by a special live performance on the auction block from multi-platinum country star Clay Walker, who sang his hit “All American.”
The auction company was also honored to have legendary Las Vegas icons Siegfried & Roy on the auction block to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of their final performance. Barrett-Jackson kicked off the tribute with a donation to Siegfried & Roy’s SARMOTI foundation, and then invited others in the audience to donate, which ended with a combined total of $95,000 that was raised. The SARMOTI Foundation protects endangered and threatened animals and also supports the Las Vegas Metro K-9 unit.
“Charity fundraising has always been a cornerstone of our events,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We are honored to have had celebrity icons such as Siegfried and Roy as well as Clay Walker on the auction block in Las Vegas to help raise money for the military, the Las Vegas Metro K-9 Unit and endangered animals. The contributions of our sponsors, bidders, consignors and fans are second to none as we look ahead to our Scottsdale event in January.”
Other memorable philanthropic highlights included Lot #3001 1957 Lincoln Continental Mark II as it inspired the weekend’s highest bid of $700,000, benefiting Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. Lot #3003 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Penske Racing No. 2 Dodge Charger driven by Brad Keselowski fetched $500,000 for The NASCAR Foundation. Ford Motor Company also took part in the charity excitement by auctioning Lot #3004 2014 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet to help The Multiple Sclerosis Society, bringing $200,000. The sale of Lot #3002 2008 Ford Mustang Saleen Fastback supported The Austin Hatcher Foundation by raising $180,000.
“When our customers see a good cause needing support, the atmosphere in the auction arena is magical. Barrett-Jackson is devoted to increasing awareness of these charities by offering a platform for raising funds with the sale of these amazing vehicles,” added Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “It‘s inspiring to see how people can come together and share a common vision to help these organizations. We believe in supporting worthy organizations and the $57 million in charitable contributions to date is a testament to that philosophy.”

LAS VEGAS (September 24, 2013) — Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™, is known for non-stop action and a variety of one-of-a-kind automobiles to cross the auction block, and this year’s Las Vegas event is no exception, as the legendary auction company is excited to announce Lot #689 1999 Chevrolet Suburban from “The Sopranos” Seasons 1-4. The Suburban was utilized in seasons 1-4 of the renowned series and will cross the block at No Reserve on Saturday, September 28th. The upcoming 6th Annual Las Vegas auction takes place September 26-28 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
The Suburban is the actual vehicle driven by the show’s famous protagonist, Tony Soprano, portrayed by James Gandolfini. The late actor, who passed away in early 2013, autographed the car’s sun visor on the driver’s side with a personalized message “Take Care of My Car”. Fans of “The Sopranos” will also remember it as the automobile Tony drives in the opening credits. The character has the Suburban until he acquires an Escalade after being promoted to the “boss”.
“What makes this truck so unique is that people recognize it as its own character in the drama series,” said Craig Jackson, CEO and Chairman of Barrett-Jackson. “It’s hard to picture Tony Soprano, one of the most notable television characters in history, not riding through his neighborhood in this maroon Suburban, which is extremely rare and fascinating in the age of modern television.”
The potential owner of Lot #689 1999 Chevrolet Suburban from “The Sopranos” Seasons 1-4 will not only leave the auction with the famed Suburban, but with several screen-used props and production items included with the vehicle. “The Sopranos”, regarded by many as the greatest television series of all time, aired from 1999 through 2007.
“The 1999 Chevrolet Suburban is not only a standout vehicle in this year’s diverse docket, but is also considered to be an American pop culture monument,” said Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson. “We foresee that this unique offering is sure to bring excitement to bidders and car enthusiasts on every level.”

The factory-styling Sting Ray gifted to the father of the Corvette – Harley J. Earl – will cross the block at Mecum’s Chicago auction this Oct. 10-12 at the Schaumburg Convention Center. Among an anticipated 1,000-car lineup, this car stands out as the personal driver of GM’s head designer who was one of the most significant innovators in the history of the American automobile.
This 1963 Corvette Convertible (Lot S110), Shop Order 10323, is a one-of-a-kind build given directly from General Motors to the man often credited for introducing design and color to the American automobile industry. Harley J. Earl joined GM in 1928 and became head of the General Motors Design team, retiring in 1958. His designs in the ‘50s at the Motorama tours are what brought the Corvette to the attention of the American public and to the world.
Gifted to Earl for his lifetime of contributions to General Motors, he kept the Metallic Blue car at his home in Palm Beach, Florida, for use as his personal driver. He enjoyed the Corvette for two years, even using it as the parade car at the Daytona 500 in 1965 when he served as Grand Marshall. The trophy given to the winner of the Daytona 500 remains his namesake to this day, dubbed “The Harley J. Earl Trophy.”
One of only four Corvettes ever built with the custom side exhaust system, the car features a custom gauge and dash treatment unique to S.O.10323. As a longtime member of the Corvette Hall of Fame, this car is a mainstay of the Bloomington Gold Special Collection having been invited more than any other Corvette in existence. Confirmed by GM as the very car custom built and gifted to Earl, the car has since been restored to the specifications as when it arrived in Earl’s driveway.
The historically significant, one-of-a-kind Harley J. Earl Corvette will cross the block on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Chicagoland’s only collector and classic car auction.
Doors to the Mecum Chicago auction will open each day at 8 a.m. Portions of all three days will be broadcast live on Discovery’s Velocity Network in addition to the live stream of the entire auction presented by Mecum at www.mecum.com. Mecum’s website is updated daily with the latest consignments including detailed descriptions and photographs of the vehicles. To view the list, to consign a vehicle or to register as a bidder for the Chicago auction, visit www.mecum.com or call (262) 275-5050.
