The world’s fastest and strongest American muscle cars came out for Dana Mecum’s Original Spring Classic auction, which this year marked 27 years of business for the auction house. Big names like Hemi, Super Duty, Boss, Tri-Power and King of the Road were common sights at this high-performance event. The auction, held in Indianapolis May 13-18, saw 1,465 cars cross the auction block with 937 hammering sold. The 64 percent sell-through rate brought total sales to $40,360,815.
The newly renovated Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum served as an incredible auction arena with comfortable seating for both bidders and spectators alike. Similar to the display setup that debuted at Mecum’s Kissimmee auction, an enormous staging area adjacent to the auction block allowed bidders to easily flow back and forth from upcoming cars to the bidding floor.
In addition to the sale of massive amounts of muscle, classics also had a strong presence and some notable exchanges were made over the course of the six-day event. Among them was a restored 1931 Cadillac V-12 Roadster (Lot S163) that sold for $215,000, and a 1935 Cadillac 355D Convertible (Lot S116.1) which hammered for $156,000. Also of note, a Bid Goes On sale was made of a 1930 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Phaeton at $1.25 million.
The top sale made on the auction block in Indy was claimed by a 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra Roadster, CSX2135 (Lot S134), which hammered at $885,000. As one of the first Cobras to employ rack and pinion steering, this car was used as a demonstrator to promote the new feature making it an even more desirable example of the coveted Cobra name. The second seat in top sales was occupied by a 1963 Pontiac Catalina Super Duty Swiss Cheese (Lot S158), the most famous of 14 cars built. Selling in the Bid Goes On department at $530,000, the car boasts the title of NHRA C/Stock record holder and presents in fully restored condition, finished as original in Frost Silver with as-raced lettering. Rounding out the top three, the 1,300-original-mile 1968 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro SS (Lot S152) with documented race pedigree demanded a sale price of $320,000.
The complete top 10 sales list for the Mecum Indianapolis auction includes (all individual sales reflect hammer prices):
1. 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra Roadster, CSX2135 (Lot S134) at $885,000

1968 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro SS (Lot S152)
One of 64 Camaros modified by Don Yenko in 1968, this powerhouse is documented as one of the first group of 20 cars. These first 20 cars were built without the COPO 9737 designation that included heavier-duty cooling systems, suspension and brake upgrades. In 1970 it was sold to drag racer and Memphis Rodders’ club member A.J. Lancaster, who prepared it for competition in the NHRA’s new Pro Stock class, removing and storing the Yenko engine and replacing it with a specially built dual tunnel-ram 427 CI unit for competition. Lancaster also removed and stored the original interior components and left the original body essentially stock, making the car’s restoration a relatively straightforward affair. That task was taken up by its present owner, Dr. Vance Shappley, who after acquiring it in 1991 refinished the car in its original Sequoia Green and reassembled it to its original configuration. It is once again as ordered with a Muncie M21 four-speed manual transmission and the original 427 CI engine installed by Yenko, which has been freshly detailed. This is among the most significant Yenkos today, having acquired a documented racing pedigree. Adding to its rarity is the fact that it accumulated most of its 1,304 miles a quarter mile at a time, making it one of the lowest-mileage Yenko Camaros in existence.
1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 (Lot F229)
This generously optioned special-order example is quite literally one of a kind, as unique as any vintage Z28 could possibly be. Unrestored and original but for a single repaint, its original purchaser, Mr. Lyle Mader of Madison, South Dakota, was not only a knowledgeable buyer but a quite particular one as well. He specified the car to reach the Z28 package’s maximum potential, and to put his personal stamp on his new baby, Mader ordered Special Paint to match the color of his pickup truck. Listed as Light Blue on the Chevrolet and GMC Commercial Colors palette, it was more widely referred to as Carolina Blue for its popularity with North Carolina dealers. While it is impossible to know for sure if any other Z28 Coupes were produced in the same color, it is almost certainly the only one in existence today and also quite likely the only one produced with its full-length stripes continuing past the rear spoiler and down to the bottom of the rear valence. This one-of-a-kind 1969 Z28 is well known in the collector community and has been described as the most unique, well-documented and well-preserved example in the world. At 46,432 miles it remains in extraordinarily original condition. Its fulsome documentation includes the original two-page retail sales order, window sticker, Protect-O-Plate, two-page rail shipper, loan and tax paperwork and key fob. This special-order Carolina Blue 1969 Cross Ram Z28 is a great specimen of its breed and a must-have centerpiece for any muscle car or Camaro collection.
1963 Shelby 289 Cobra Roadster, CSX2135 (Lot S134)
Serial number CSX2135, this stunning 1963 Shelby Cobra 289 is one of the first Cobras to employ rack-and-pinion steering and was used as a demonstrator to promote the new feature. After a year of such duties, the car was reconditioned for resale and spent 35 years in California with various caretakers. Today CSX2135 presents in beautifully pristine condition, needing nothing to make it ready for its new home with a committed Shelby Cobra enthusiast. Now sporting a clean coat of midnight blue with black https://www.montauk-monster.com/pharmacy leather interior, CSX2135 would be a crown jewel of any classic muscle car collection. The original 289 CI engine as well as a set of 5.5-inch Shelby knock-off wire wheels are included with this exceptional and rare early rack-and-pinion demonstration Cobra.
1966 Shelby GT350 Fastback (Lot S161)
This 1966 GT350 was owned and raced by Swiss ace driver Herbert Müller from 1966 through the early 1970s. A European export model shipped to Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough, England, it was modified with R-Model type racing equipment including a roll bar, oil cooler, 37-gallon fuel tank, fiberglass front valence, American Racing Torque Thrust “D” alloy wheels and, most interestingly, a Weber-inducted GT40 engine built by Holman-Moody. Shelby serial number SFM6S342, the Müller GT350 remains configured as it was when delivered by Ford Advanced Vehicles, retaining the Holman-Moody engine. It is officially listed as an Independent GT350 Racer in the Shelby Registry and is offered with complete supporting documentation, including contemporary news articles, a copy of the invoice from Shelby American to Ford Advanced Vehicles and a copy of a letter confirming the Müller estate’s interest in selling the car.
1963 Pontiac Catalina Swiss Cheese (Lot S158)
This 1963 “Swiss Cheese” Catalina is perhaps the most famous of the just 14 that were built before GM’s racing ban. Sponsored by Packer Pontiac of Detroit, it was driven in 1963 by Packer employee Howard Maselles, who set the NHRA C/Stock class record with a 12.27 ET at 114.64 mph, a record that stood for several years. The car was discovered in the late '70s by famed Pontiac collector and historian Randy Williams, and was the first of several historically significant Super Duty Pontiacs that formed his famous collection. After years of collecting a vast treasure trove of Pontiac NOS parts and pieces, Williams and his good friend Scott Tiemann of Supercar Specialties in Portland, Michigan, began restoring the car, completing the project in 2000. Today the Packer Pontiac “Swiss Cheese” Catalina is regarded as the reference point for this rare group of Pontiac lightweight factory racers, a monument to Randy Williams’ dedication to preserving Pontiac history and to Scott Tiemann’s world class craftsmanship and expertise. It is extensively documented by the records and photographs compiled by Howard Maselles, including the original “For Sale” flyer created by Maselles to sell the car at the end of the 1963 season.
1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda (Lot S185)
The final year for the Hemi-powered Plymouth pony car was 1971, and examples such as this Sherwood Green Metallic example are almost unheard of today. One of only 59 Hemi four-speed coupes produced in 1971, it has been in the care of a single dedicated owner for the last 35 years and received a rotisserie restoration in 2006. This factory R-code Hemi Cuda incorporates an unstamped warranty block fitted with correct heads, intake and 1971 Carter four-barrel carburetors. The driveline is completed with a Hemi-rated New Process four-speed manual transmission and A33 Track Pack Dana rear end with 3.54:1 gears. Like all Hemi Cudas, it is equipped with heavy-duty suspension and brakes and the distinctive Shaker hood and hold-down pins; additionally, it is optioned with a Black vinyl roof and Green bucket-seat interior with Rallye gauges and one of the rarest accessories from the Cuda catalog: an AM radio with console-mounted cassette recorder. Documentation includes the factory original broadcast sheet and fender tag.

Mecum Auctions’ annual spring auction in Kansas City, Mo., held this past weekend yielded strong results as one of Mecum’s most consistent sales. With a 65 percent sell-through rate and $8,678,668 in sales, the three-day auction demonstrated its continued appeal to the Midwest enthusiasts and beyond. Of the 574 cars that crossed the block, 370 were scooped up by eager buyers among a full crowd of bidders, sellers and spectators.
The all-indoor auction held at Bartle Hall in the Kansas City Convention Center is a continued favorite for Mecum and its customers, along with its sister auction held annually at the same location in December. With eight football fields worth off contiguous, column-free space, the main exhibition hall is an inviting area for enthusiasts who come to enjoy the auction’s laid-back nature and the Midwest ambiance that abounds.
The auction’s top sale was a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback (Lot S95). As the first Candyapple Red Boss 429 built and sold, the car demonstrated its desirability with a $260,000 hammer price. Offered complete with comprehensive ownership history and the original build sheet, KK #1238 is documented as one of the first 50 hand-built prototype 429s. The second-highest sale came in the form of a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window Coupe (Lot F198). Its instantly recognizable split rear window appearing for just one model year, these Corvettes are always a hot commodity. The restored, Red-on-Red example that crossed the auction block in Kansas City brought $107,000.

Mecum blasted into Houston this past weekend with a gigantic sale dominated by a $7 million hammer price for the 1964 Ford GT40 Prototype, GT/104. Overall sales reached $33,633,058 with 765 of the total 1,085 vehicles offered changing hands, achieving a healthy sell-through rate of nearly 70 percent.
“Our Houston event is one of the fastest growing auctions on our calendar,” noted Mecum President and Founder Dana Mecum. “The quality of collector cars continues to rise year after year here in Houston, and the people of this great car town are what keep us coming back to the great state of Texas. Attendees witnessed so many great cars sell at this year’s auction, and several will go down as some of the most memorable in our company’s history.”
On day three of the auction, the highly anticipated offering of the 1964 Ford GT40 Prototype GT/104 (Lot S147.1) took place in front of a bidding arena that was filled to capacity. After more than five minutes of suspenseful bidding, the hammer dropped at an astounding $7 million, securing the top sale of the entire four-days of auction at the Reliant Center and marking itself as what is certain to be one of the top sales of the year in the collector car market and, perhaps, what will be the highest price paid for an American race car at auction this year. GT/104 is one of only two famously prepared and raced by Shelby American for the 1965 season and is one of the first race cars of any kind to benefit from computerized missile aerodynamics technology and the budding field of telemetry. As the first-ever 1965 Shelby American-specification GT40, chassis GT/104 is widely regarded as the most original and correct prototype Shelby American team car.
In addition to the memorable GT40 sale, the second highest seller was an emotional one as the now famous “McNamara Corvette,” an original and unrestored 1967 Coupe (Lot S128) with just 2,996 miles on the odometer, brought $725,000, resulting in another record-setting Corvette sale by Mecum Auctions as the highest price ever paid at auction for a 427/390-horsepower example of America’s sports car. Its unique story is one that tickles human intrigue, involving a private man who hid the car from the world for nearly four decades in his climate-controlled, single-car garage. The highly documented Corvette was unveiled and displayed at Bloomington Gold in 2012. The sale of the car included extensive documentation and photos of its discovery and history.
The complete top 10 sales list for Mecum’s Houston auction includes (all individual sales reflect hammer prices):
1. 1964 Ford GT40 Prototype, GT/104 (Lot S147.1) at $7,000,000
2. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe (Lot S128) at $725,000
3. 1968 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro RS/SS (Lot B4) at $450,000
4. 2008 Ferrari 430 Scuderia Coupe (Lot S189) at $170,000
5. 1934 Cadillac Fleetwood V-12 All-Weather Phaeton (Lot S153) at $165,000
6. 1968 Toyota FJ-44 (Lot S228) at $150,000
7. 1932 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Huntington Limousine (Lot F200.1) at $145,000
8. 1960 Porsche 356B Cabriolet (Lot S107) at $145,000
9. 1970 Plymouth Superbird (Lot F274) at $135,000
10. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (Lot F215) at $127,500
Immediately following the classic and collector car sale held Thursday-Saturday, Mecum held a motorcycle-exclusive auction on Sunday that included an offering of 174 vintage and antique bikes, 125 of which hammered sold for an impressive 72 percent sell-through rate. With a total of $1,337,965 in sales, the event was another pronounced success for MidAmerica Motorcycles presented by Mecum Auctions.

PALM BEACH, Fla. (April 14, 2014) – Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™, announced today the strongest sales results in the history of its auctions in Palm Beach, Fla. Two leading car manufacturers – Ford and General Motors – partnered with Barrett-Jackson to bring unique vehicles to the auction. Consignments reached a new high, the caliber of vehicles in South Florida was unprecedented and the average price per car grew significantly. In addition, the benefit to national and local charitable organizations was significant.
“Each year, Palm Beach continues to expand its impact, bringing better cars, more fans and growth. We have enjoyed the years here and this year was a stellar showing, which continues the explosive start we had in Scottsdale,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “This week, we had great entertainment, saw some incredible cars and sold seven special vehicles with all proceeds benefitting the designated charities. We have a strong partnership with Palm Beach and the South Florida Fairgrounds and this week demonstrated that relationship.”
For charity, more than $2.35 million was raised over the three-day auction. Ford sold the 2013 Ford Mustang Fastback, which appeared in “Need for Speed” for $300,000. General Motors sold the first retail production vehicles of the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 2 Door Coupe for $500,000 and the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 2 Door Coupe for $1,000,000. The charities that benefit from these sales include: Rebuilding Together, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, AARP Drive to End Hunger, Henry Ford Health System, Karmanos Cancer Institute, The Cancer Research Fund at TGEN, and the Boy Scouts of America Occoneechee Council.
“The cars we saw in Palm Beach were unlike any previous year. These cars we are now seeing are truly unique,” said Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson. “Through the years, coming to the Fairgrounds, we have seen glimpses of how Palm Beach would grow and evolve. This auction weekend was another example of this special market.”
The opening Night Gala featured Soul Survivors, with a special appearance by pop sensation, Rob Van Winkle, formerly known as “Vanilla Ice,” who rocked the night and jump-started the auction weekend for the VIPs, media, celebrities and other attendees.
