Racing Driver Dr. Dick Thompson to Appear at Mecum Kissimmee, FL Auction
Dr. Dick Thompson, known as the “Flying Dentist” during the glory years of automotive road racing, will be appearing at the Mecum auction at Kissimmee, Florida, Friday, January 23 and Saturday, January 24. He will be reunited with the 1963 Corvette Z06 race car, “Gulf One”, which he drove in 1963 and is being offered for sale Saturday afternoon.
Dr. Thompson cut a winning swath across the country in the Fifties and Sixties. Thompson raced everywhere from the Sebring 12 Hour Race against an international lineup to Road America, where America’s finest road racers met each summer.
Dr. Thompson will be available for autographs Friday afternoon and evening and looks forward to seeing old friends and meeting new fans. The Mecum Auction has incorporated a special autograph page inside the front cover of the Kissimmee Event Program making it a special souvenir for auction attendees. Dr. Thompson will also be available all day Saturday in the hours leading up to Gulf One’s sale tentatively schedule for 2:30 PM.
In the Fifties, the "Flying Dentist" contended for national championships and was a mainstay in SCCA racing but also competed in international events. At that time the amateurs and professionals competed against each other around the world and often drove in several races in a weekend – a far cry from today’s racing. Dr. Thompson has a wealth of memories from his racing days and fans are invited to strike up a conversation with one of America’s true Racing Legends.

The car will be sold Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, as Lot # S110. See the Mecum website for more information on Gulf One. The general public is welcome, with tickets available at the door for $10.
