Ferrari From ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ Crossing The Auction Block At Mecum

Mecum Auctions will offer more than 750 classic and collector vehicles at the fifth annual Daytime Auction at the Hyatt Regency in Monterey this weekend, and among the hefty and impressive lineup is a true celebrity. The famed Ferrari California Spyder Replica from the ‘80s classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” will cross the block on Saturday as Lot S163.

As the actual car used in the filming of the movie, it was built by Neil Glassmoyer of Modena Design and Development to perfectly suit the vision of Director John Hughes. One of only three built for the filming of the movie, this might be the only surviving example.

“They gave us four weeks to build the movie cars,” recalls Glassmoyer. “I always say we built two and a half cars; two were interchangeably used as Hero and stunt cars and one was a rolling fiberglass shell that was used in the destruction scene. This car was actually intended for the stunt work, but both saw action, and both wound up with broken front suspension bolts because the big jump scene took nine takes between the two cars.”

Fully restored by Glassmoyer, this movie-star car is now being offered directly from the original builder at The Mecum Daytime Auction in Monterey this Saturday, Aug. 17. Glassmoyer himself will be onsite and available for interviews and to answer questions about the car.

Mecum’s Monterey auction will open daily at 8 a.m. Portions of all three days will be broadcast live on Discovery’s Velocity Network, and as always, Mecum will present a live stream of the entire auction at www.mecum.com. Mecum’s website is updated each day with the latest consignments including detailed descriptions and photographs of the vehicles.
