Crowd Shakers And History Makers At Mecum’s Chicago Auction Oct. 10-12
Mecum Auctions is taking the gavel to Chicagoland this Oct. 10-12 with 1,000 vehicles expected to cross the block at the breathtaking Schaumburg Convention Center. The lineup is already fraught with headline-worthy consignments including the most famous wheel-standers in drag racing history– the Hurst Hemi Under Glass Collection – as well as the one-of-a-kind, factory-styling Corvette gifted to Harley J. Earl, a man often considered to be one of the most significant innovators in the history of the American automobile.
The Hurst Hemi Under Glass Collection (Lots S145-S145.3) is a group of four Barracuda-based powerhouses built by Bob Riggle that appeared as crowd-thrilling wheel-standers at major events across North America from 1965-75 and then again from 1992 until 2009. Each of the four cars is built with the same over-sized engine in the rear, visible beneath the back window, hence their “Hemi Under Glass” moniker. The excessive power of the engines coupled with the uneven weight distribution allows the cars to scream down the track in excess of 100 mph with noses skyward and sparks flying from their track-skimming rear ends. Offered together as one lot from the Bill Sefton Collection, these history-making cars are still fully capable of thrilling any car-loving crowd. Bob Riggle and Hurst’s famous “Shifter Girl” Linda Vaughn will be onsite to sign autographs during the auction.
Another featured consignment set to cross the block at Mecum’s Chicago auction is the 1963 Corvette Convertible (Lot S110) gifted to Corvette’s original designer, Harley J. Earl. This factory-styling Sting Ray is a one-of-a-kind build given to the man who is commonly known to have introduced design and color to the American automobile industry. His designs in the ‘50s at the Motoramas are what brought the Corvette to the attention of the American public and to the world. This ‘63 Corvette, Earl’s gift for his lifetime of priceless contributions to GM and car design, has long been a member of the Corvette Hall of Fame and is a mainstay of the Bloomington Gold Special Collection having been invited more than any other Corvette in existence.
Along with these historic greats will be hundreds of other desirable collectors from all over the country including some from Chicago’s own backyard. Local collector Mike Guarise will be offering four investment-grade Stage 1s from his Buick GS Stage 1 Collection, and Illinois resident Patrick Hurst will offer more than 50 cars in a lineup dedicated to his father and dubbed “The Bud Hurst Collection.”
