A recent Forbes Autos article, carried on-line at the Yahoo! Finance website and other places, quotes Dana Mecum giving his advice on picking future collectibles.
"If we look back into all the eras of collectible cars — to the Brass Era, the big American classics of the ‘30s, the European sports cars of the ‘50s, and American muscle cars of the ‘60s — a single set of facts made the cars collectible,” says Dana Mecum, president of Mecum Auctions, in Marengo, Ill. “If the car was of limited production, was special in its day, and was bought for personal enjoyment and not for basic transportation, it became collectible.”
Although it’s impossible to know exactly which cars are destined for future acclaim, looking at those indicators helps narrow the field. “In making a prediction for the future, apply that criteria to cars today — those bought primarily for pleasure and limited in production — and you'll have a strong indicator if they will be collectible in the future," Mecum says.

LAS VEGAS – Nov. 4, 2008 – Barrett-Jackson Auction Company, entertainer Bill Goldberg and YearOne unveiled a spectacular 1970 NASCAR Plymouth Road Runner Superbird tribute car today that will be sold at No Reserve Jan. 17, 2009, for charity. Mr. Goldberg revved up the crowd when he uncovered the Superbird tribute during the 2008 SEMA Show in Las Vegas and announced that the MOPAR will be auctioned during the 38th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event in Scottsdale, Ariz., which will take place Jan. 11-18, 2009. All proceeds from the sale of the Superbird tribute (Lot #1289) will benefit the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, which exists to prevent, provide for and ultimately cure spinal cord injuries and other debilitating illnesses.
“This car represents an amazing era,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Someone will end up with a rare custom muscle car built to vintage NASCAR specifications by one of the premier shops in the world. From the ‘all-business’ engine to the distinctive lines, it’s a salute to an era when drivers like Richard Petty helped put NASCAR on the map. This Superbird tribute will be one of the stars of our 2009 Scottsdale event, with all proceeds being donated to our dear friend Darrell Gwynn and his wonderful foundation”
The black and blue custom Superbird was built by YearOne in Braselton, Ga., in conjunction with Gillette Evernham Motorsports, Musclecar TV and former pro wrestler, actor and auto enthusiast Bill Goldberg. The car pays homage to the legendary muscle cars that dominated stock car racing in the late 1960s and early ‘70s. Period-correct NASCAR modifications include raising the transmission tunnel, moving the rear springs inboard, a stout X-brace to tie the sub-frames together, wheel tubs and a generous radius of the wheel openings. A full roll cage and NASCAR-style bare bones interior round out the Superbird tribute.
While the body is all retro, the power is ultra modern. Gillette Evernham Motorsports contributed a NASCAR-spec 358cid Dodge engine that produces nearly 800 horsepower. It includes a feather-weight Tex Racing 4-speed manual transmission feeding an 8 3/4-inch rear.
“Bill Goldberg approached us with an idea to re-create a Superbird that would be as close to a genuine racecar as possible, but streetable,” said Kevin King, president of YearOne. “After nearly 4,000 hours of labor and contributions from motorsports powerhouses like Gillette Evernham, the NASCAR Superbird was reborn. And we couldn’t think of a better way to top off this amazing build than to auction it off for a worthy cause.”;
The Superbird tribute will be displayed in the Barrett-Jackson booth (#21239) throughout the 2008 SEMA Show alongside Jeff Gordon’s No. 24 DuPont NASCAR Monte Carlo (Lot #1274). The race car was driven by Gordon 14 times during the 2006 and 2007 seasons, winning the USG Sheetrock 400 at Chicagoland Speedway July 19, 2006, and the Bank of America 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Oct. 13, 2007. It will also cross the block in January during Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale event.

Warrensville Heights, OH – Planet Color® custom color paints and Barrett-Jackson Auction Company® have teamed up to introduce a special offering for many car collector enthusiasts – a unique palette of new co-branded factory packaged automotive colors reminiscent of the greatest muscle cars and those of today’s top custom car builders.
Planet Color is the custom color paint system from Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes Corp. (SWAFC) and Barrett-Jackson Auction Company is the leading specialist in providing products and services to classic and collector car owners and automotive enthusiasts around the world.
Planet Color has been a tremendous hit among custom automotive enthusiasts, painters and shop owners alike for several years now. Made from a series of optically enhanced coatings containing special combinations of highly reflective additives, Planet Color offers stunning, radical, multi-dimensional finishes that are color shifting, iridescent, illuminating and shimmering in their texture. And now, teamed with Barrett-Jackson, they will soon become classics.
“We appreciate the opportunity to team up with Barrett-Jackson and the valuable information they provided us on re-styled vehicle colors from the iconic muscle car era to the hottest colors utilized by today’s top custom car builders,” said David Kidd, SWAFC OEM Business Development Manager/Planet Color. “The results are new Planet Color finishes that offer unparalleled durability; perfectly matching the rich, vibrant colors of both the older and new classics, as well as providing more clarity and a brilliant appearance.”
“We’re excited to partner with Sherwin-Williams Automotive and Planet Color,” said Steve Davis, Barrett-Jackson President. “We believe this partnership will provide automotive enthusiasts, collectors and true artists with some of the finest products to either re-create the classic car colors they remember or create new designs limited only by their imagination.”
All new 30 factory packaged automotive custom colors are formulated with cutting edge enhancement pigments and additives creating a clean finish. In addition to being ‘just plain cool,’ these colors are also compliant throughout North America, including California and Canada’s recently adopted tighter regulations, by now meeting 3.5 VOC regulation requirements.
Planet Color custom coatings are mixed using SWAFC’s premium OEM quality urethane system to provide unparalleled durability. This urethane technology provides the flexibility to mix and save custom formulas for repairs or for future use. Plus, with the possibilities of two- and three-coat applications, painters and enthusiasts can create colors limited only by their imagination, opening the door to a world ‘Where Art and Science Collide™.’
In anticipation of this announcement, there was a sneak preview of this new partnership at last month’s Sharpie 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway as both the Planet Color and Barrett-Jackson logos were prominently featured on Robby Gordon’s No. 7 car. And although the car was a little banged up before the race ended, it was expertly restored, repainted and the gleaming black, orange and flaming red painted vehicle was then auctioned off at the recent Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Auction in October.
Planet Color is available at SWAFC branches and participating distributors throughout North America. For more information about Planet Color visit www.planetcolor.com. For more information about Barrett-Jackson visit . For information about Robby Gordon and the No. 7 team, visit
