Barrett-Jackson Gears Up For Spectacular 2009 Scottsdale Collector Car Event

Scottsdale, Ariz. – January 8, 2009 – In less than a week, the 38th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction will take center stage in Scottsdale, Ariz. From Jan. 11-18, 2009, the all No Reserve auction will feature everything from muscle cars and classics to a historic vintage airplane, providing collectors with one of the most eclectic dockets in auction history. SPEED will broadcast nearly 40 hours of live, high-definition coverage of all six auction days.

“We’re just days away from another spectacular Scottsdale auction,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “The successful sale in Las Vegas last October has given us tremendous momentum, leading to an amazing lineup for Scottsdale. The combination of our diverse offering and the lifestyle attractions away from the auction block make Barrett-Jackson truly special and the ‘main event’ of automotive gatherings in the Phoenix area next week.”

Provenance Brings it Home
A unique story, connection to the past or rare origin can turn a vehicle into a star collector car. Barrett-Jackson has been recognized for consigning vehicles like Carroll Shelby’s 1966 Cobra Super Snake in 2007, which sold for $5.5 million, a record for an American-built vehicle. This year, Barrett-Jackson has nabbed an impressive collection of history-rich vehicles for the Scottsdale auction, including the first production Ford Thunderbird (Lot #1295). The Raven Black 1955 T-Bird convertible was produced by Ford on Sept. 9, 1954, and represents the birth of Ford’s sports car program.

Joining the famous T-Bird is a 1947 Steyr-Allard racer (Lot #1304) owned and built by the legendary Sydney Allard, one of America’s greatest automotive pioneers. Sydney Allard drove the Steyr-Allard in the British Hill Climb Championship for five years and it is the most documented, race winning Allard of all time.

No muscle car represents America’s hunger for performance during the 1960s and ‘70s more than the Yenko Camaro. Barrett-Jackson will auction four rare Yenko Camaros and a Yenko Nova (Lot #’s 1276-1278) from the celebrated Gary Holub Collection. The group includes a Daytona Yellow Camaro (Lot #1278), also known as the “Preston and Lawrence Yenko”, that is one of only three surviving 1969 models personally sold by Don Yenko for use in NHRA drag racing.

Barrett-Jackson will also offer a rare 1929 Ford 4-AT-E Tri-Motor airplane (Lot #1307) at No Reserve in Scottsdale. One of only a handful of surviving 1929 Ford Tri-Motors, it has led a storybook existence, including being shot during the World War II attack at Pearl Harbor, dropping smoke jumpers and supplies to firefighters in Montana during the 1960s and being extensively restored by aviation expert, Bob Woods. The Tri-Motor’s current owner, Dolph Overton III, is a former U.S. Air Force ace and one of the most decorated Korean War veterans in the Unites States.

“These vehicles help people connect to a milestone, celebrity or special moment in time,” added Davis. “Just like owning a piece of antique furniture, rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia or fine art, documented provenance can bring history to life. Sitting in the Allard that created the company’s racing legend, driving a Yenko Camaro that launched a muscle car counter-culture or piloting a plane that survived Pearl Harbor makes you part of that vehicle’s story for all time.”

First Impressions
For the past three years, American automakers have chosen the Barrett-Jackson stage to auction the rights to first production performance vehicles and special editions with proceeds benefitting charities, and 2009 is no different. Rights to the first retail production 2010 Chevrolet Camaro coupe (Lot #1316) will be auctioned by General Motors at the 2009 Scottsdale event to benefit the American Heart Association. The winning bidder will receive VIN No. 100001 and can spec the Camaro to their liking, choosing from several colors, engines, transmissions and trim packages.

Ford will auction rights to the first retail version 2010 Shelby GT500 (Lot #1347.2) and 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor (Lot #1347), with all proceeds going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The 2009 Ford Mustang FR500CJ Cobra Jet prototype No. 1 (Lot #1347.1) will also cross the block in Scottsdale. Built to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic 1968 Mustang Cobra Jet, the 2009 model features the Supercharged 5.4 Cobra Jet engine and a bevy of performance upgrades from Ford Racing.

Corvette Heaven
America’s love affair with the Corvette is hotter than ever, and Barrett-Jackson will feed that passion in Scottsdale with 16 stunning ‘Vettes with National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS) pedigree. The Barrett-Jackson consignment team worked closely with NCRS officials to verify awards and scores on each of these special Corvettes.

Headlining the group is a 1967 Corvette convertible (Lot #1327) that features a 427 c.i.d., 435 horsepower engine and the Lyndale Blue over black color combo. Fully restored in 2008, it captured two NCRS Top Flight Awards with a high score of 97.7.

Another highlight will be a 1963 Corvette coupe (Lot #1263.1) with a list of options. Honors for this 327 c.i.d., 360 horsepower split-window Fuelie include Bloomington Gold, 2-time NCRS Top Flight Award and a Duntov Mark of Excellence Award.

“NCRS is extremely pleased to be associated with Barrett-Jackson,” noted Roy Sinor, NCRS National Judging Chairman. “We are indeed proud that Barrett-Jackson has ‘stepped up to the plate’ so to speak and acquired the NCRS ‘Award Confirmation Document’ for each of the 16 cars with NCRS awards. We are dedicated to maintaining the judging standards of our organization and are pleased that Barrett-Jackson and the Corvette enthusiast recognize the significance of these awards.”

Superstar Cars
Rock stars, actors and other celebrities utilize Barrett-Jackson to not only add to their car collections, but find new owners for their prized automobiles. This year in Scottsdale, rock ‘n’ roll icon Eddie Van Halen will auction a pair of Chevrolet classics from his personal collection. The 1956 Chevy 210 (Lot #1259) and 1956 Chevy Nomad (Lot #1259.1) will each be sold with matching, one-of-a-kind EVH Brand “Wolfgang” guitars and a pair of red, white and black EVH striped sneakers.

The maroon 1956 Chevrolet 210 is a Pro Street hot rod built by customizer Jim Van Gordon. The car features a powerful 454 c.i.d. big block Chevy engine that pumps out more than 600 horsepower, making it suitable for the drag strip while still street legal. Van Halen’s 1956 Chevrolet Nomad station wagon sports a classic “Cashmere Blue” and white paint scheme. The car underwent a frame-off restoration and features a 265 c.i.d., 210 horsepower “Power Pack” V8 engine, power steering and power brakes.

“Out of all the cars I have owned over the years, I hung onto the ‘56 Sedan and Nomad because I was closely involved in restoring and building them, so they are very special to me,” explained Van Halen. “I almost hate to let them go, but I don’t have the time to drive them. It kills me to see them sit there when someone else could be driving them and have the pleasure and joy of owning these beautiful classic cars.”

A 1984 Aston Martin Lagonda (Lot #1314.1), 2004 Mercedes-Benz S600 (Lot #1314.2) and 1999 Featherlight Vogue motor coach (Lot #1315) from the garage of the late Evel Knievel will be sold. The Aston Martin was Evel’s daily driver during the 1980s and represented the daredevil’s flamboyant image. The one-off exotic features an automatic 502 c.i.d. big block Chevy engine, R-700 transmission, cream leather upholstery and a mirrored finish on the underside of the hood.

Additional celebrity cars slated for Scottsdale include a 1994 Porsche 911 Speedster formerly owned by Jerry Seinfeld (Lot #1321) and a 1969 Chevy Camaro convertible (Lot #1555), 1967 Toyota Land Cruiser (Lot #1556) and 1967 Jeepster Commando (Lot #1557) from the personal collection of country music star Alan Jackson.

Legends of NASCAR
Past and present NASCAR icons will be at Barrett-Jackson for the sales of numerous motorsports-related automobiles, including “The King” Richard Petty. Petty will drive a 1970 Plymouth Superbird custom tribute (Lot #1289) onto the block, which will be sold to benefit The Darrell Gwynn Foundation. The Superbird was built by YearOne in conjunction with Gillette Evernham Motorsports, Musclecar TV and Bill Goldberg.

Jack Roush will be on stage to help auction a 2008 Ford Mustang GT ROUSH P-51A (Lot #1575.1). This 510 horsepower Mustang is No. 104 of 151 built and will benefit Speedway Children’s Charities. Additional NASCAR-related cars include Tony Stewart’s 2007 Chevy Monte Carlo NASCAR (Lot #1575; to benefit The Darrell Gwynn Foundation), Jeff Gordon’s 2006 Chevy Monte Carlo (Lot #1274; to benefit the Hendrick Morrow Program) and a 2009 60th Anniversary NASCAR Motorcycle (Lot #706; to benefit Victory Junction Gang).

Barrett-Jackson To Auction A Record Fourteen Charity Vehicles During The 2009 Scottsdale Event

U.S. Automakers, Motorsports Stars Among Generous Consignors

Scottsdale, Ariz. – January 5, 2009 – The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company will sell 14 vehicles to benefit various charities at No Reserve during the 38th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., Jan. 11-18, 2009. The total marks the most charity vehicles ever sold during a single Barrett-Jackson event, with U.S. automakers General Motors and Ford Motor Company, as well as NASCAR icons Tony Stewart and Rick Hendrick among the generous donors. Barrett-Jackson, which does not collect commissions on vehicles sold entirely for charity, helped raise a combined $6.7 million for charities during the Scottsdale, Palm Beach, Fla., and Las Vegas auctions in 2008.

“Thanks to our caring sponsors, partners and customers, we’re going to offer an unprecedented number of charity cars at the 2009 Scottsdale event,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “In today’s unique economic environment, these groups need extra support to continue changing lives. At Barrett-Jackson, we’re devoted to increasing awareness of these charities by offering amazing vehicles on the hobby’s biggest stage.”

Rights to the first retail production 2010 Chevrolet Camaro coupe (Lot #1316) will be auctioned by GM to benefit the American Heart Association. The new Camaro features an eye-catching design reminiscent of the storied 1969 model, but is equipped with modern technology and a GM-estimated 27 mpg highway when outfitted with the available V6 engine. The winning bidder will receive VIN No. 100001 and can spec the Camaro to their liking, choosing from several colors, engines, transmissions and trim packages.

Ford will auction rights to the first retail version 2010 Shelby GT500 (Lot #1347.2). With world-class handling, aggressive styling and 540 horsepower, the latest generation Shelby GT500 delivers unparalleled performance. Ford will also sell the first 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor offered to the public (Lot #1347). The purpose-built, high-performance Raptor is rugged enough for challenging desert adventures yet refined enough for everyday use. All proceeds from these Ford vehicles will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Hot rod legend Boyd Coddington will be honored when a 1967 Plymouth Barracuda (Lot #1306.2) crosses the block, with all proceeds benefitting EAA’s Young Eagles program. After selling the Max HEMI for charity at Barrett-Jackson in 2006, Coddington dreamed of building an even faster muscle car to auction for children. Following Coddington’s passing in February 2008, West Coast Customs and volunteers like Marc Holmes of Rod and Gauges carried the torch and built the one-off ‘Cuda that features a 6.1-liter, 500 horsepower V8 HEMI.

“Reaching 80,000 youth annually and more than 1.4 million since the program began, the Young Eagles flights provide life-changing inspiration,” according to Tom Poberezny, president of EAA. “Aviation is a powerful tool, teaching personal responsibility, honing math and science skills and helping youth believe that, ‘if you dream it, you can do it,’ an attitude Boyd Coddington upheld. We are grateful to West Coast Customs, Marc Holmes and Barrett-Jackson for helping EAA continue to grow the impact of Young Eagles.”

Longtime Barrett-Jackson partner, The Darrell Gwynn Foundation, will benefit from the sale of a 1970 Plymouth Superbird custom tribute (Lot #1289) and the 2007 Chevy Monte Carlo NASCAR (Lot #1575) driven by Tony Stewart to three victories in the 2006 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The Superbird was built by YearOne in conjunction with Gillette Evernham Motorsports, Musclecar TV and former pro wrestler, actor and auto enthusiast Bill Goldberg.

A 2008 Ford Mustang GT ROUSH P-51A (Lot #1575.1) will also be sold. This 510 horsepower Mustang is No. 104 of 151 built and will benefit Speedway Children’s Charities. Additional NASCAR-related charity cars will include Jeff Gordon’s 2006 Chevy Monte Carlo (Lot #1274) that recorded two wins during the 2006-07 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and an officially licensed 2009 60th Anniversary NASCAR Motorcycle built by Destination Daytona (Lot #706). The bike is serial No. 60 of only 60 built and will be sold to benefit Victory Junction Gang through The NASCAR Foundation, while all proceeds from the Jeff Gordon NASCAR will be donated to the Hendrick Marrow Program.

AutoTrader.com will cater to sports fans and gear heads with the sale of a custom 2008 Chevy Tahoe (Lot #961) that includes a baseball-inspired interior and an extra hood with signatures from approximately 220 Major League Baseball players. MLB Hall of Famer Goose Gossage, who helped Autotrader.com collect the signatures as part of their Drive to a New Start program, will be on stage for the sale. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to MLB Charities.

A rare 2008 Barrett-Jackson Edition Ford Shelby GT (Lot #1563) will cross the block in Scottsdale, with all proceeds benefitting the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation. No. 26 of only 100 produced, the Shelby features a Barrett-Jackson signature black and red paint scheme, Barrett-Jackson Edition doorsill plates, a special Barrett-Jackson gas cap insert and a Shelby-installed Supercharger.

A pristine 1957 Ford Thunderbird (Lot #1055) will be sold to benefit the automotive restoration program at McPherson College in Kansas. Restored by the McPherson students, the T-Bird is powered by a 312 c.i.d. V8 with a 3-speed Ford-o-matic transmission, power steering and power brakes.

Additional charity cars scheduled for Barrett-Jackson include a 2008 Ford Mustang GT (Lot #62; International Children’s Heart Foundation) and a 1961 GMC Carryall (Lot #701; Boy Scouts of America).

Yenkos From Historic Collection To Be Sold At 2009 Barrett-Jackson Event In Scottsdale

Rare Muscle Cars Offered at No Reserve During 38th Annual Scottsdale Auction

Scottsdale, Ariz. – Dec. 18, 2008 – Five rare Yenko muscle cars from a celebrated collection will be sold at No Reserve during the 38th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., Jan. 11-18, 2009. For the first time, four Yenko Camaros and a Yenko Nova from the Gary Holub Collection (Lot #’s 1276-1278) will be offered to the public. Hailed as “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™,” the Scottsdale auction and lifestyle event will feature a diverse mix of the world’s most desirable collector vehicles. SPEED will broadcast nearly 40 hours of live, high-definition coverage of all six auction days.

“Many muscle car enthusiasts and car collectors worldwide believe that the Yenko Camaro defined America’s appetite for performance in the late 1960s,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Road racer and Chevrolet dealer Don Yenko learned how to manipulate the secret factory ‘Central Office Production Order’ (COPO) to turn the new Camaro into a formidable competitor to the Ford Mustang and Plymouth ‘Cuda. The result was a special run of high-performance Yenko Camaros and later, special versions of the Nova, Corvair, Chevelle and Vegas, that ruled the roads. We’re pleased that five of these rare muscle cars from a very special Yenko collection will cross the block at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale.”

With only a few hundred Yenko cars ever built, they are highly coveted in today’s market. Many consider the cars owned by Gary Holub to be among the most original and desirable gathered in one location.

The Daytona Yellow Camaro (Lot #1278), also known as the “Preston and Lawrence Yenko”, is one of only three surviving 1969 Camaros personally sold by Don Yenko for use in NHRA drag racing. It has the COPO L72 427/425hp engine, 3-speed automatic transmission, power steering, Hurst shifter, black vinyl roof and COPO 9737 Sports Car Conversion. The car features a special ducted hood, dual exhaust, increased cooling capacity and special suspension. It is heavily documented including Don Yenko’s name on the paperwork, original dealer package file, purchase order, Bill of Sale, shipper sheet, and paperwork from COPO Connection and Yenko Chevrolet.

“I’ve been enamored with Yenkos since I was in high school,” explained Gary Holub. “My goal then was to own one in my lifetime, but I’ve been fortunate enough to own 44 Yenkos throughout the years. The five special cars that will be sold at Barrett-Jackson include unprecedented documentation. The Daytona Yellow Camaro, for instance, includes the original Window Sticker and dealer packet from 1969.”

One of 50 Yenkos built under COPO 9560 to qualify for NHRA, the 1969 Camaro ZL-1 COPO coupe (Lot #1277.1) features an aluminum 427 ZL-1 engine, special ducted hood, heavy duty radiator, springs and a 4.10 posi rear. The powerful Yenko is one of only 10 ZL-1’s in Fathom Green and is documented with paperwork from GM, Fred Gibb Chevy and COPO Connection.

The other 1969 Yenko Camaro (Lot #1277) is one of 30 built with the 427/425hp engine with an automatic in Fathom Green. The car is equipped with a special hood, dual exhaust, special suspension, 140mph speedometer and larger stabilizer bar. This car is a 10-time show winner and is documented by COPO Connection. It includes the Yenko dealer invoice, judging sheets and owner’s registrations.

The final Yenko series built was a Camaro that debuted in 1981 as a Turbo Z. This particular car (Lot #1276) is number 10 of 19 and is the first Camaro to win the prestigious Don Yenko Memorial Award. Yenko Turbo Z #10 is believed to be the only one fitted with a cigarette lighter. This is a 100 percent original car with original tires, spark plugs, turbocharger, paint and interior. It is documented in the Yenko Turbo Z Registry and includes the Window Sticker and Yenko dealer invoice.

The Silver Yenko Nova (Lot #1276.1) is one of 175 built and one of only 25 with a silver exterior. The Nova “Yenko Deuce Coupe” features a LT1 Corvette 350 engine, a Muncie 4-speed manual, F41 sport suspension and a 12-bolt differential with a 4.10:1 posi-traction. Its documentation includes a Don Yenko Inventory List, COPO Connection Certificates, owner’s registrations and a portion of the Build Sheet.

“Experts have said that Don Yenko wanted to be Chevrolet’s answer to Carroll Shelby,” added Davis. “He leveraged his success racing Corvettes and his father’s GM relationship to create a series of Chevy super cars that harness some of the most impressive muscle engineering of the time.”

The Yenkos will join the world’s most desirable collector vehicles and automobilia to be sold at the historic Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction. Lifestyle attractions will also return to Barrett-Jackson in January in the form of luxury vendors, galas and fashion shows. Barrett-Jackson’s trendy night-spot, “The Garage,” will be the site of exclusive gatherings throughout the event.

Mecum Kansas City Auction Tops $4 Million In Sales

True car collectors turned out for a successful weekend at the Mecum Auction at the Kemper Arena, Dec. 5-7, 2008, in Kansas City, Mo.

Total gross sales, including buyer’s premium, for the three-day auction was $4,007,415.  Mecum had a 50% sold rate at the auction – a good sales accomplishment for an all consignment auction during boom years, but an even greater achievement at the end of a year like 2008.

Mecum Auctions President Dana Mecum noted that while prices were down relative to the high values of 2006 and 2007, today’s prices are stabilizing at 2004-2005 levels, which is an encouraging trend that is more in line with the steady value growths of 1994 through 2005.

Kansas City’s Top 10 Sales (all sales include buyers’ premiums) were:

  1. 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Resto Mod (Lot S125) at $96,300
  2. 1970 Plymouth Superbird Hardtop (Lot 120) at $86,625
  3. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 427/400 HP (Lot S155.1) at $72,975
  4. 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A Hardtop (Lot S86) at $72,800
  5. 1960 Chevrolet Impala Convertible (Lot S83) at $58,800
  6. 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Replica Convertible (Lot S168) at $51,975
  7. 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air 2-Door Hardtop (Lot S170) at $48,825
  8. 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A Coupe (Lot S224) at $48,300
  9. 1960 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 350/400 HP (Lot S147) at $47,123
  10. 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28 Coupe (Lot S128) at $45,675

“Attendance at Mecum’s Kansas City auction was up a remarkable 49% over last year’s event – a true testament to the stamina of the collector car hobby,” Mecum said.  “Although not at the high levels experienced during 2006 and 2007, we continue to see activity in the collector car marketplace as they are luxury items that enthusiasts remain passionate about.”

In addition to selling a wide range of cars, Mecum delivered solid results for the Mark Wilson Collection, a cross-section of 26 classic muscle cars that sold at no reserve for $692,700 with buyers’ premiums.  Most notably, the auction’s top two-selling cars – the 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Resto Mod and 1970 Plymouth Superbird Hardtop – were from the Wilson Collection, demonstrating Mecum’s consignment capabilities as it continues bringing interesting collections to auction for buyers.

Full results of the Kansas City, Mo., auction are available to Mecum InfoNet members, which is free to join at https://www.mecum.com/infonet/infonet.cfm.  Mecum InfoNet members can log in to see car-by-car results by visiting the Consignments Page.

The general public is welcome at Mecum’s next auction – the Mecum Kissimmee Auction, Jan. 22-24, 2009, in Kissimmee, Fla. – with tickets available at the door for $10. For more information, visit www.Mecum.com.  Upcoming auctions will be broadcast live on Mecum’s popular television series, “Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars & More,” which returns for the 2009 season on HD Theater – A Discovery Company.

The Mecum Auction Company has been specializing in the sale of collector cars, muscle cars and Corvettes for more than 20 years.  In spring 2008, the company sold its 50,000th car.  Consignment, Bidder, event and accommodation information is available online at www.Mecum.com or by calling (815) 568-8888.

Mecum Auction Proudly Presents 1963 Gulf Oil Corvette Z06 Race Car

Mecum Auction, the high-performance and collector car auction specialists, are proud to offer the historically significant 1963 Gulf Oil Corvette Z06 Race Car at the 2009 Mecum Kissimmee Auction, Jan. 22-24, 2009, in Kissimmee, Fla.

Capitalizing on the introduction of the radical new-for-1963 Corvette Sting Ray, legendary Corvette Chief Engineer Zora Arkus Duntov defied the Automobile Manufacturers Association’s collective racing ban and commissioned Regular Production Option Z06, a special component package that elevated Corvette performance to a level never before seen in a production car.

This historic 1963 Z06 – driven by Dr. Dick Thompson of “Flying Dentist” fame and known simply as “Gulf One” – competed in the 1963 Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) National Championship.  During its career, it was the most widely campaigned of all the works cars and the only one to campaign at the national level, racing in more venues than any other.  It remains the most highly original of all the racing Z06 Sting Rays and a monument to one of American sports car racing’s greatest eras.

“This Gulf Oil Z06 is the last of the factory Corvette racers available and is the very car that led to the development of the Grand Sports prototype back in 1963,” said Dana Mecum, president of Mecum auctions.  “An amazing 45 years after its race debut, Mecum Auction is pleased to bring collectors the opportunity to own one of the most important cars in the history of production Corvette performance development.”

This Sting Ray’s road to fame is extraordinary.  Of the 21,513 production Corvettes in 1963, the Gulf One (Serial Number 2227) was:

  • One of only fourteen regular production Corvette Serial Numbers assigned specifically for competition;
  • The first of two regular production Corvette Serial Numbers assigned to Yenko Chevrolet specifically for competition;

Barrett-Jackson To Host Preview Days For Ford Tri-Motor Airplane In Goldsboro, N.C.

Aviation Enthusiasts and Bidders to get Exclusive Look at Famous Aircraft

Scottsdale, Ariz. – Dec. 02, 2008 – The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company will host a preview of the rare 1929 Ford 4-AT-E Tri-Motor airplane that is scheduled to sell at No Reserve during the 38th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., Jan. 11-18, 2009. The preview is free to the public and will take place on Dec. 6 and 7 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Goldsboro Air Center inside Goldsboro-Wayne Municipal Airport, located at 240 Aviation Rd., Pikeville, N.C., 27863. The historic aircraft, which took fire during the World War II attack at Pearl Harbor, was recently restored to original specifications and is one of only a handful of Ford Tri-Motor airplanes in existence.

Ford Tri-Motor Plane

“Because so few of Ford’s marvelous Tri-Motor airplanes still exist, this is a rare opportunity to see such an important and historic aircraft,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “This particular aircraft survived being shot by enemy aircraft and the perils of fighting fires in Montana. This might be the last chance to see an icon of an important period in American history before it goes into a private collection.”

The Tri-Motor entered production after World War I, when Henry Ford recognized the potential for mass air transportation. Ford Motor Company built 199 Tri-Motors from 1926 through 1933.

The Tri-Motor that will be sold at Barrett-Jackson began its journey in 1929 in Spokane, Wash., where it served as a passenger plane for Mamer Flying Service. It was later sold to K-T Flying Service of Honolulu and was at Pearl Harbor during the surprise strike by the Japanese navy on Dec. 7, 1941. The Tri-Motor suffered exterior bullet holes during the attack but was quickly repaired and returned to service.

The Tri-Motor that will be sold at Barrett-Jackson began its historic journey in 1929 in Spokane, Wash., where it served as a passenger plane for Mamer Flying Service. It was later sold to K-T Flying Service of Honolulu and was at Pearl Harbor during the surprise military strike by the Japanese navy against the United States on Dec. 7, 1941. The Tri-Motor suffered exterior bullet holes during the attack but was quickly repaired and returned to service.

The plane was leased by Trans World Airlines in 1949 for its 20th anniversary celebration, modified into a sprayer and fire fighting tanker and used by Johnson Flying Service in Montana to drop smoke jumpers and supplies to fire fighters. Since 1969, the plane has been privately owned and was part of the Wings and Wheels museum collection previously located in Orlando, Fla.

Bob Woods supervised the majority of the Tri-Motor’s restoration in Goldsboro. During the restoration, the airframe was reworked, a new interior installed and the exterior completely re-skinned. The landing gear is complete and original as are the straight-laced wire wheels. To match the condition of the plane when it was delivered in 1929, no modern avionics or communications gear were added.

The plane will be sold at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction on Saturday, Jan. 17, during SPEED’s primetime coverage.

“The world comes to Barrett-Jackson events to celebrate their passion with fellow enthusiasts, and this is the forerunner to our January 2009 Scottsdale event,” added Davis. “Since the plane will not physically cross the block in Scottsdale, the open house will allow bidders to inspect the Tri-Motor in person before the sale. And for two days, a bit of the Barrett-Jackson excitement will make imaginations soar as people revel in the aircraft’s presence and dream of taking it home.”

SYDNEY ALLARD’S PERSONAL STEYR-ALLARD RACER TO BE SOLD AT 2009 BARRETT-JACKSON EVENT IN SCOTTSDALE

Auto Pioneer’s Hill Climb Championship Racer To Be Offered at No Reserve

Scottsdale, Ariz. Nov. 21, 2008 - The 1947 Steyr-Allard racer owned by the legendary Sydney Allard, one of America’s greatest automotive pioneers, will be sold at No Reserve during the 38th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., Jan. 11-18, 2009. Considered the most famous of all Allards, the race car captured victories worldwide and blazed a path followed by American heroes like Carroll Shelby and Briggs Cunningham. Hailed as “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions,” the Scottsdale auction and lavish lifestyle events will feature a diverse mix of the world’s most desirable collector vehicles. The historic sale of the Allard will be captured as part of SPEED’s nearly 40 hours of live, high-definition coverage of all six auction days.

“This is a car with a fantastic pedigree that can be enjoyed at a Concours or historic racing event,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Sydney Allard is considered the first to combine a British chassis with an American or German V8 to create a car with outstanding reliability and power to weight ratio. This was the formula later followed by Briggs Cunningham and then Carroll Shelby, who also raced an Allard before going on to build the iconic Cobra. Some could argue that this championship Allard set the stage for some of the greatest sports cars in the world.”

This race car is the most documented, race winning and famous Allard of all time. Sydney Allard drove the Steyr-Allard in the British Hill Climb Championship for five years. He finished third in 1947, third in 1948, first in 1949, second in 1950 and third in 1951. The Allard held class and outright records at all hill climb courses and sprint events that it competed in during the period. The car could have been even more successful, but Sydney Allard’s other racing commitments, such as coming in third at Le Mans in 1950 and winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1952, kept him from entering all of the hill climb events. After being sold in 1952, it competed in numerous races until the early 1960s.

The car was built using a set of altered production Allard J1 chassis rails fitted with tube and channel cross-members. The front suspension was the standard Allard Bellamy split axle but with the radius rods behind the axle and pivoting in line with the front axle pivot points.

With engine choices limited in the post World War II period, Sydney chose a lightweight, air-cooled Austrian Steyr V8 that was used in WWII armored cars. Allard modified it for competition and the engine developed 150 horsepower at 4,000 rpm with the finished car weighing only about 1,600 pounds.

“It’s been said that the car’s layout was determined by having Sydney sit on a soapbox on the workshop floor,” noted Davis. “They propped the V8 and gearbox on a wooden box to approximate the correct height, with broomsticks acting as axles for the front and rear wheels to create the 100 inch wheelbase. The car’s dimensions were then written in chalk on the factory concrete floor and construction began following the chalk outline.”

In 1994, the car was fully dismantled and a long, six year restoration process was completed. The car is currently in 1949 Hill Climb championship winning configuration with the coil sprung De Dion rear end, rear tubular shock absorbers, rear inboard brakes with Alfin drums and rear wheel drive. It is also complete with documentation, spares and a unique Allard battery cart. Since restoration, it has competed regularly at numerous hill climb events and continues to receive invitations to special events such as the 2003 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it won its competition class.

The 1947 Allard will be joined by approximately 1,000 collector vehicles and automobilia to be sold at the historic Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction. Lifestyle attractions will also return to Barrett-Jackson in January in the form of luxury vendors, galas and fashion shows. Barrett-Jackson’s trendy night-spot, “The Garage,” will be the site of exclusive gatherings throughout the event.

FIRST PRODUCTION FORD THUNDERBIRD TO BE SOLD AT 2009 BARRETT-JACKSON EVENT IN SCOTTSDALE

Rarest of All Birds to Highlight 38th Annual Scottsdale Extravaganza

Scottsdale, Ariz. – Nov. 18, 2008 – One of the most significant American sports cars ever built, the first production Ford Thunderbird, will be sold at No Reserve during the 38th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event in Scottsdale, Ariz., Jan. 11-18, 2009. The Raven Black 1955 T-Bird was produced by Ford Motor Company on Sept. 9, 1954, and represents the birth of Ford’s sports car program. Hailed as “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions,” the Scottsdale auction and lavish lifestyle events will feature a diverse mix of the world’s most desirable collector vehicles. As always, SPEED will broadcast nearly 40 hours of live, high-definition coverage of all six auction days.

“We are extremely proud to offer this incredible vehicle that I’ve followed closely over the years,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “For Thunderbird enthusiasts and general collectors alike, this is a rare chance to own the first production Ford T-Bird, an American icon. It’s been meticulously restored to original specifications and comes with plenty of documentation to tell its amazing story.”

Penned by Ford designer Frank Hershey, the Thunderbird was a hit among sports car fans across America and became an instant competitor for the Chevrolet Corvette. The first T-Bird is equipped with a 292 Y-block engine, Fordomatic (automatic) transmission, power steering, power windows and power seats. The creature comforts incorporated into the build gave the debut of the first T-Bird even more sizzle.

Ford’s new star was tested and featured in numerous articles upon its release, including “Testing the Thunderbird” in the Oct. 4, 1954 issue of “Sports Illustrated.” The first Thunderbird has also been displayed at venues across the United States, from Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn, Mich., to the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

“After Ford authenticated this 1955 T-Bird as number one, it became a superstar in the automotive world and was paraded across the country for years,” added Davis. “First production vehicles have an appeal that no other car in their lineage can compete with, especially when they represent the beginning of one of the most legendary marques of the 1950s. As a result, this first production Thunderbird will be extremely valuable to collectors.”

The 1955 Thunderbird will be joined by approximately 1,000 collector vehicles and automobilia to be sold at the historic Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction. Lifestyle attractions will also return to Barrett-Jackson in January in the form of luxury vendors, galas and fashion shows. Barrett-Jackson’s trendy night-spot, “The Garage,” will be the site of exclusive gatherings throughout the event.
