Mecum, the high-performance and collector car auction specialists, are excited to announce the incredible 1967 Camaro Cherokee RS/SS Convertible General Motors Styling Car will be auctioned at the 22nd Dana Mecum Original Spring Classic Auction, May 13-17, 2009, in Indianapolis, Ind.
“Originally debuting in Detroit back in May 1967, this candy-apple red customized convertible has 21,000 original miles,” said Dana Mecum, president of Mecum Auction. “Mecum is honored to offer this one-of-a-kind vehicle to automotive enthusiasts, collectors and historians at our annual Spring Classic event.”
A styling exercise for GM design veterans Bill Mitchell and Vince Piggins, the 1967 Camaro Cherokee was pulled off the Norwood, Ohio, assembly line and sent to Mitchell’s famed GM Design Center where subtle exterior modifications transformed the car into a fashion icon. A ducktail spoiler was integrated into the rear end while Corvette-style split bumpers were fitted to the front and back. Sheet metal modifications were finished in the car’s original Aztec Gold Metallic, which served as a base for a gorgeous Candy Apple Metalflake Red trimmed with Gold pinstriping.
“The fact that this Camaro Cherokee even exists today for all of us to enjoy is truly incredible, as corporate liability issues and racing bans at General Motors had long dictated that it was doomed to the scrap heap even before it was completed,” Mecum continued. “It truly is a rare piece of automotive history whose excellent condition and originality represent the cornerstone of its value.”
Distinguishing itself from counterparts, the Cherokee’s most distinct characteristic was – and still is – a hand-crafted fiberglass hood scoop, the upper element of which is formed from Plexiglas to reveal eight polished ram tubes that feed a set of four 48mm Weber downdraft cars atop an aluminum Moon Can-Am intake.
The noteworthy Mark IV big block is an “unstamped” pre-production L78 unit rated at 375 horsepower – the official factory figure before the addition of the Weber/Moon induction system that added at least another 50 horses. Original red interior has been replaced with a custom black that still adorns the car today; the original custom console and a tilting Corvette steering wheel also complement the interior.
Additional technical specifications include:
- Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic transmission
- 12-bolt Positraction rear end
- J52 front power disc brakes
- Koni front and AC Delco rear air shocks
- Power steering
- Custom fiberglass hood
- Hood-mounted tachometer
- Driving lights
Featured as a “Camaro for the street” in a 1967 issue of Hot Rod magazine, the Cherokee served Pace Car duties at Road America Can-Am under the helm of Sir Stirling Moss. The car caught the eye of Mitchell’s friend Augie Pabst, who owned the car for several years before trading it to Vilter Chevrolet-Buick in Oconomowoc, Wisc. The Cherokee then transferred hands to Dan Frank of the Custom Top Shop until 1979 and was later sold to Brooksfield’s Edward Maurer, where it drew the attention of collector and current owner Terry Lietzau, a 30-plus-year muscle car enthusiast.
The Camaro Cherokee is a main attraction at the must-attend Original Spring Classic Auction at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and will be auctioned on live national TV at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2009. The event is open to the general public and tickets are available at the door for $10. For more information, visit www.Mecum.com. The Original Spring Classic Auction, which is expected to feature more than 1,000 vehicles, will be broadcast live on Mecum’s popular television series, “Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars & More” on HD Theater – Discovery Communications’ first 24-hour high-definition cable network, offering compelling real-world and motorized content.
The Mecum Auction Company has been specializing in the sale of collector cars, muscle cars and Corvettes for more than 20 years. In spring 2008, the company sold its 50,000th car. Consignment, Bidder, event and accommodation information is available online at www.Mecum.com or by calling 815.568.8888.
With the crowd on its feet and attendees cheering with excitement, Mecum dropped the hammer on the historically significant 1963 Gulf Oil Corvette Z06 Race Car as it crossed the block at the Mecum Auction at Osceola Heritage Park, Jan. 22-24, 2009.
As the leader of the pack, the “Gulf One” topped the auction’s sales and sold for $1,050,000.
“We’re declining to participate in this recession,” said Dana Mecum, president, Mecum Auctions, noting the significant sales and strong attendance at the Kissimmee event. “The collector car market has stabilized and it’s now getting back to the levels seen in 2004 and 2005.”
The Gulf One was the main attraction of 750 collector cars, muscle cars and Corvettes offered at the auction, which reported a 58% sold rate. Auction attendance grew 51% over 2008. Total gross sales for the three-day auction were $16.5 million, up from $15.2 million last year. Starting with this auction, Mecum has begun reporting the hammer prices for all vehicles sold – not including buyer’s premiums.
Kissimmee’s Top 10 Sales were:
- 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 “Gulf One” (Lot S110) at $1,050,000
- 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster (Lot S158) at $525,000

Mecum Auctions truly has a car for anyone who’s in the market, offering a large variety of makes and models as well as price ranges. “Those collectors looking for a weekend driver can find a beautiful car that meets their desires and their pocketbooks,” added Mecum. “I am proud of the entire Mecum team, who once again performed tremendously during this auction to serve the consigners and bidders. We are committed to delivering the best results – for the lowest commissions – of any auction company.”
While a series of records were broken by Mecum at their Kissimmee, Fla., auction – attendance, sales and Web site viewers were higher than any numbers from last year’s event – it was also the auction company’s first live broadcast from Osceola Heritage Park, which aired on the television series “Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars & More” on HD Theater, Discovery Communication’s premier high-definition network. Viewers can catch all the action in encore performances of “Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars & More” on HD Theater starting Saturday, February 7 from 7-11 PM ET. In addition, “Mecum Auto Auctions: Behind-The-Scenes”, a new three-part special following Dana Mecum throughout the Kissimmee event, will premiere on Tuesdays, starting February 3 from 8-9 PM ET on HD Theater.
Excitement surrounding the million-dollar Corvette Z06 was enhanced by the presence of legendary driver Dr. Dick Thompson, who was on site signing autographs and taking pictures next to the race car he originally drove in 1963. Known as the “Flying Dentist,” Thompson contended for national championships during the ‘50s and ‘60s and was a mainstay in SCCA racing.
Full results of the Kissimmee, Fla., auction are available to Mecum InfoNet members, which is free to join at https://www.mecum.com/infonet/infonet.cfm. Mecum InfoNet members can log in to see car-by-car results by visiting the Consignments Page.

Atlanta, Georgia – January 23, 2009 – Take the hood of a Chevy Tahoe; bring it to six Major League Baseball parks; have more than 220 players sign it, including the biggest names in baseball today, Baseball Hall of Fame members and future stars of tomorrow; and what have you got? One of the most unique pieces of baseball memorabilia ever created.

This one of-a-kind piece of baseball memorabilia and a unique, baseball-themed Chevy Tahoe fetched a final bid of $100,000 at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Friday, January 16. This $100,000 will be added to the $100,000 AutoTrader.com raised during the 2008 baseball season through the company’s Drive to a New Start program and all $200,000 will be donated to youth baseball programs in the six cities AutoTrader.com visited with the program.
The winning bidders, Tom and Diane Day of Corona, Calif., are big baseball fans and Los Angeles Angels season ticket holders. They plan to display the Tahoe and the hood with several other collector cars they have purchased over the years.
“The entire Day family is excited about having this terrific car and sports collectible and we’re happy the proceeds will go to benefit youth baseball,” said Tom Day.
The hood is signed by stars like Derek Jeter, Ryan Howard, Mariano Rivera, Francisco Rodriguez, Vladimir Guerrero, Carlos Zambrano, Chipper Jones, Barry Zito and Tim Lincecum. The hood also made a stop in Cooperstown, N.Y., for the Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony in July, where Hall of Fame members Yogi Berra, Bob Gibson, Ozzie Smith, Tom Seaver, Whitey Ford and others also signed. And front and center on the hood is the first signature from https://pharmacy-no-rx.net/cipro_generic.html 2008 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Goose Gossage, who toured the country with AutoTrader.com as the spokesperson for the program.
All signatures on the hood were authenticated by Steiner Sports, the leader in sports memorabilia authentication and sports marketing.
In total, about 220 current and former players signed the hood. The six teams who hosted Drive to a New Start events were the Atlanta Braves, the Los Angeles Angels, the New York Yankees, the Philadelphia Phillies, The Chicago Cubs and the San Francisco Giants. Youth baseball programs affiliated with each team will split the $200,000 final tally raised through the Drive to a New Start program.
The Chevy Tahoe, which was auctioned with the hood, has been dubbed the Ultimate Baseball Ride because of some special upgrades. In addition to “standard” luxury features like top of the line stereo, DVD player with several screens and custom paint, the SUV features Rawlings baseball glove leather seats and steering wheel and baseball-bat ash wood dashboard, door panel and steering wheel accents.
Drive to a New Start was one of AutoTrader.com’s 2008 marketing and community outreach programs. In each city Gossage visited with AutoTrader.com, he hosted a youth baseball clinic for inner city children, met fans and signed autographs at pre-game events and conducted on-field or in-box media interviews. At each city, Gossage helped collect players’ and coaches’ signatures on the hood, with each signature garnering an AutoTrader.com donation to youth baseball programs in those cities.
“It was a real thrill to be involved with this program,” said Gossage. “Touring the country, collecting these signatures and helping kids learn about baseball was all very rewarding. I’m glad this fetched such a high bid at the auction. That money will go a long way to helping some great kids.”

Dr. Dick Thompson, known as the “Flying Dentist” during the glory years of automotive road racing, will be appearing at the Mecum auction at Kissimmee, Florida, Friday, January 23 and Saturday, January 24. He will be reunited with the 1963 Corvette Z06 race car, “Gulf One”, which he drove in 1963 and is being offered for sale Saturday afternoon.
Dr. Thompson cut a winning swath across the country in the Fifties and Sixties. Thompson raced everywhere from the Sebring 12 Hour Race against an international lineup to Road America, where America’s finest road racers met each summer.
Dr. Thompson will be available for autographs Friday afternoon and evening and looks forward to seeing old friends and meeting new fans. The Mecum Auction has incorporated a special autograph page inside the front cover of the Kissimmee Event Program making it a special souvenir for auction attendees. In the Fifties, the "Flying Dentist" contended for national championships and was a mainstay in SCCA racing but also competed in international events. Scottsdale, Ariz. – January 20, 2009 – The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company exceeded industry-wide expectations by recording more than $63 million in sales last week during the 38th annual Scottsdale auction. From Jan. 11-18, 2009, the all No Reserve auction featured an eclectic offering, including a 1929 Ford 4-AT-E Tri-Motor airplane that sold for $1.21 million and the “first production” 1955 Ford Thunderbird that fetched $660,000. Despite an uncertain economy, numerous Barrett-Jackson records were set, including $220,000 for a 1959 Chevrolet Corvette convertible, $250,000 for a 50th Anniversary Hurst Performance 2008 Dodge Viper and $137,500 for a 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 fastback.
Hailed as “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™,” the 2009 Scottsdale event featured over 1,100 collector vehicles and 40 hours of live, high-definition TV coverage on SPEED. For the third consecutive year, more than 200,000 people attended the Scottsdale auction.
“The car collector community enjoyed another stellar Scottsdale event at Barrett-Jackson,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “It was truly a celebration of our hobby and its resiliency. Sales were solid from start to finish and exceeded expectations. Barrett-Jackson was an oasis for hundreds of thousands of people looking to escape the economic headlines and enjoy some amazing cars in beautiful weather.”
The rare Tri-Motor aircraft, one of only a handful known to be in existence today and extensively restored by aviation expert, Bob Woods, has led a storybook existence, including being shot during the World War II attack at Pearl Harbor. The Thunderbird that was sold is also overflowing with provenance, as it is documented by Ford Motor Company as No. 1 and represents the birth of Ford’s sports car program.
In addition to the top sellers, Barrett-Jackson offered a healthy collection of entry level to mid range cars. With nearly 70 percent of all purchases made by new buyers, these vehicles served as the nucleus of the 2009 event. The diverse docket also catered to buyers planning to spend conservatively in today’s economy.
“Our customers asked us to offer more mid range vehicles this year,” noted Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “And the solid sales performance demonstrates the wisdom of our approach. While the Tri-Motor and Thunderbird were highlights of the week, collectors really responded to cars in the $50,000 to $150,000 price range. We’re cognizant of the current economic conditions and made sure to offer something for everyone.”
Barrett-Jackson joined forces with General Motors to offer a select group of vehicles from the GM Heritage Fleet, which was embraced by the company’s diverse clientele. “The General Motors Offering represented an opportunity for collectors to own a piece of GM history,” continued Davis. “An example was the show-stopping ‘Blackhawk’ concept that went for more than $500,000. Many of the vehicles from the GM Offering exceeded our original estimates, validating this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Barrett-Jackson continued to elevate into a passion-filled lifestyle experience, including celebrities in attendance and more than 350 exhibitors, ranging from luxury to mainstream products and services. The passion and enthusiasm for the car collecting hobby and the lifestyle it represents remains healthy, despite the current economy. Additionally, Barrett-Jackson helped raise more than $4.4 million for various charitable organizations during the 2009 Scottsdale auction with the help of Richard Petty, Rusty Wallace, Goose Gossage, Bill Goldberg, Reggie Jackson and Robert Yates, among others.
“The Scottsdale auction was a success on many levels,” added Jackson. “People are already asking for bidder and consignment applications for our Palm Beach event in April. Everyone involved in this fantastic week would agree that the collector car hobby continues to be healthy.”
The top 10 cars sold in Scottsdale include:
- 1929 Ford 4-AT-E Tri-Motor airplane – $1.21 million (Lot #1307)
