- Ethisphere announces Barrett-Jackson to 2010 List of the World’s Most Ethical Companies
- Barrett-Jackson named as one of the 100 companies Singled Out for High Ethics
- Designation awarded for having leading ethics and compliance programs
COSTA MESA, Calif. – June 21, 2010 – Ethisphere has named the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company one of the most ethical companies in the world. Ethisphere, an international think-tank dedicated to the sharing and advancement of corporate social responsibility around the globe, recognizes companies who demonstrate real and sustained ethical leadership through ethics and compliance programs. Barrett-Jackson was the only auction company among the highly respected group on the 2010 World’s Most Ethical Companies List, which includes industry giants Mattel, T-Mobile, General Electric, HP, American Express, Nike and Starbucks.
“To be named on Ethisphere’s 2010 World’s Most Ethical Companies List is a proud achievement for everyone at Barrett-Jackson,” said Craig Jackson, chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “It’s rewarding to achieve this third party validation of the strength of our companies ethics and compliance programs.”
Barrett-Jackson is one of 26 new companies around the globe to be added to the 2010 list. The list includes industry leaders from the financial, automotive, aerospace and healthcare sectors, among others.
“Our team has worked hard to set the bar for ethics and transparency in the automotive auction industry and these efforts are demonstrated in each aspect of our business,” added Jackson. “For example, every car that crosses our block is sold to a verified buyer who is pre-registered and pre-qualified. We conduct each auction transaction in a fair, consistent manner and our sellers receive their proceeds in a timely manner. Ethics is the cornerstone of how we do business at Barrett-Jackson.”
Companies from across the world submitted applications to Ethisphere, which were narrowed down to a select few based on the substance of the applications. Finalists completed an in-depth questionnaire, and the winners were selected based on their answers as well as documentation and company information collected.
“It’s an exciting time for Barrett-Jackson,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Through the efforts of everyone on our team, we created processes and standards over the years designed to ensure everything we do is fair, honest and transparent. This announcement recognizes all of these efforts. Whether someone comes to buy, sell or simply attend our great events, each auction experience will be special and will occur under the Barrett-Jackson umbrella of high ethical standards. We’re proud to continue raising the bar of excellence in our industry in a world of mistrust and non-compliance.”
Eithisphere’s announcement of Barrett-Jackson’s accolade comes on the eve of its inaugural Orange County Auction, which is scheduled for June 25-27, 2010 at the OC Fair & Events Center in Costa Mesa, Calif. This is the first year Barrett-Jackson will officially bring its world renowned automotive lifestyle event to Orange County, California. Fans can expect to see sponsor promotions and displays, vendors, exhibitors, interactive demonstrations, parties and other festivities with hundreds of vehicles crossing the block.
Combined with Scottsdale, Ariz., Palm Beach, Fla. and Las Vegas, Nevada, Orange County, California will be the Company’s fourth event added to its stable of annual signature events. These events are spaced approximately every 90 days starting with the January Scottsdale event and followed by the April Palm Beach event, June Orange County event and Fall Las Vegas event.

RICK MINER: “THERE COULDN’T BE A BETTER PLACE FOR BARRETT-JACKSON TO HOLD A COLLECTOR CAR AUCTION THAN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, THE BIRTHPLACE OF AMERICA’S CAR CULTURE.”
HAGERTY FANTASY BID GAME HIGHLIGHTED by ENHANCED PER CAR PRIZING WITH 16-GIGABYTE iPAD; COVERAGE & FANTASY BID BEGINS FRIDAY, JUNE 25 at 5 P.M. ET
SPEED plans 18 hours of live coverage from the inaugural Barrett-Jackson Orange County Collector Car Event and ‘no reserve’ auction at the Orange County Fair & Events Center in Costa Mesa, Calif. This is the third of four auctions – Scottsdale (January), Palm Beach (April), Orange County (June) and Las Vegas (October) – slated for broadcast in 2010.
The on-air team is recognizable to regular Barrett-Jackson viewers; as SPEED’s Formula One Voice Bob Varsha offers play-by-play and Motor Trend Executive Editor, Matt Stone, who resides in nearby Glendale, Calif., provides color commentary. Former Southern California resident Steve Magnante, a leading muscle car expert and freelance automotive writer, is teamed with long-standing automotive enthusiast and NASCAR on FOX/SPEED play-by-play announcer, Mike Joy, on the auction block. Roaming the tents and providing storylines is Rick DeBruhl, who also previews cars for the network’s interactive Hagerty Fantasy Bid game.
“There couldn’t be a better place for Barrett-Jackson to hold a collector car auction than Southern California, the birthplace of America’s car culture,” said Rick Miner, SPEED SVP of Production & Network Operations. “Whether it’s hot rodding in Van Nuys, running the Pacific Coast Highway or cruising Hollywood Boulevard, the passion for great automobiles in this part of the country will make for a spectacular inaugural event.”
The aforementioned Magnante, who now lives in Massachusetts, has spent most of his life in Southern California, writing for Hot Rod and other high-profile magazines while collecting some of his favorite muscle cars. Magnante’s background has him tuned into this unique culture which dates all the way back to the late 1940s and encompasses a diverse group of automotive aficionados, each being represented within the Barrett-Jackson experience.
“The returning servicemen from WWII, the prosperity that grew out of the post-war boom economy and the technology that resulted from war-time production really came together in Southern California,” Magnante said. “The year around, these guys could play games with their hot rods or their regular cars. It really became ground zero for interesting automobiles.
“Of course, where these hot rods grew, so did a sports car culture,” Magnante continued. “In Torrey Pines (Calif.) and in and around the San Diego area, there were big places for the sports car groups as well (including one of the largest SCCA Nationals). Austin Healey, Triumph and some of the earliest MGs had some of their biggest customer sales on the West Coast. We see those crossing the auction block from time to time as well. What it basically came down to is that the weather was so good year around.”
Obviously, Southern California is best known for its film and television industry. So it’s no surprise that famous cars also have a prominent place at the inaugural auction, including the highly customized 1936 Ford Five Window Coupe (lot 382) that Monster Garage star Jesse James used as his personal ride. It has been featured in television shows, magazines and a popular auto parts retail store commercial. Another screen-friendly car set to sell at ‘no reserve’ is the 1970 Plymouth Road Runner (lot 362) known as ‘Hammer.’ Used as Vin Diesel’s car in the closing moments of Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift and more prominently in the fourth installment of the Fast & Furious movie franchise, this sterling gray, 526-inch big block Mopar was also featured during an episode of Bud Brutsman’s popular Rides television show.
“In SoCal, you’re going to see a little more of a free style restoration, and people doing their own thing rather than being bound by a restoration manual that says you can only do things a certain way, like putting a chalk mark on the upper control arm,” Magnante added.
Additional hot items will be historic drag cars; including Jim Prescott’s bright red Chevrolet Impala (lot 82) known as ‘The Mouse Trap.’ Restored back to street legal condition, the 409-cubic-inch engine still carries the large port, 425-horsepower factory heads it had back in the day. Another car, lot 339.1, is a historic 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 hardtop ‘A’ stock West Coast racer campaigned by Leon Wright in the mid 1960s, and Carl Tovato after 1967. The burgundy-bodied drag car is powered by a 427-cubic-inch V8 and was restored with a four-speed Borg Warner T10 in 2003.
“Nostalgia for recreated or actual vintage drag cars is becoming big,” Magnante said. “They are coming on in the same way some Jaguars with racing history were coveted or race-proven Ferraris and such. It does seem like drag cars with history are also starting to come into the spotlight. There were hundreds, if not thousands, of drag cars all over the country that made their own little wave.”
The Hagerty Fantasy Bid Game is also a big part of every Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction on SPEED, and is set for the inaugural Orange County broadcast. Starting on Friday, 18 cars are selected to cross the block while the audience battles for a wide array of prizes.
Once SPEED’s DeBruhl introduces a selected car during the live broadcast, the audience can log on to www.speedfantasybid.com or www.SPEED.com with the opportunity to guess the final gaveled price of each car. Bidding closes as soon as the selected cars roll onto the auction block, and each prize will be awarded to the fantasy bid closest to final auction price without going over.
The inaugural Barrett-Jackson Orange County auction’s grand prize, based upon the most accumulated points earned throughout the four days of Hagerty Fantasy Bid competition, is a 46-inch wide screen 1080p high-definition television combined with a DVD home entertainment system. Additional prizes are also awarded as the first runner-up receives a Sony VAIO ‘Netbook’ computer and second runner up wins a Sony digital camera. Also, a 16-gigabyte iPAD is given to per car winners while three daily prizes, a 32-inch LCD high definition television, are available as well.
SPEED.com also has in-depth coverage set for the auction, as three exclusive cameras will be placed for live streaming of ‘on the block’ action, while SPEED.com automotive editor Bob Golfen is set for in-depth market evaluation and photography. Additional auction interactivity will include chats, trivia and on-site blogs.

- Jesse James to sell 1936 Ford Custom Five Window Coupe at No Reserve
- First time James has consigned vehicle from his personal collection
- Hot rod is feature car at the inaugural automotive lifestyle event
COSTA MESA, Calif. – June 8, 2010 – Jesse James of West Coast Choppers fame will sell his 1936 Ford Custom Five Window Coupe at No Reserve during the Inaugural 2010 Barrett-Jackson Orange County Auction. This is the first time that James has consigned a vehicle from his personal collection at Barrett-Jackson. The hot rod will be one of the feature cars at the automotive lifestyle event, June 25-27 at the OC Fair and Event Center, which will be broadcast live by SPEED TV in high definition.
“We’re pleased that Jesse chose to show off the talents of West Coast Choppers by consigning the car at Barrett-Jackson,” said Craig Jackson, CEO of Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction. “Our event is a perfect place for a vehicle of that caliber to cross the auction block because it will be appreciated by enthusiasts and collectors alike who will all want to view this interesting piece of history.”
James’ 1936 Ford Custom Five Window Coupe (Lot #382) has a three-speed automatic transmission and a 350 engine. The stunning purple custom paint was by Burnt Carlson from Hot Rods by Boyd while the interior features custom air brushing on the dash. The custom metal work was performed by masters at West Coast Choppers, which includes the chopped, smoothed, custom Nash truck grill. The vehicle, which is James’s personal ride also features 1936 Bugatti taillights.
“My ‘36 Ford is a prime example of West Coast Choppers craftsmanship and Long Beach Style,” said James, motorcycle shot caller. “I chose Barrett-Jackson because they are the benchmark for automotive trends. The fact is if a car sells at Barrett-Jackson, cars just like this will start selling all around the world.”
The car has appeared in various publications including books, magazines and TV shows. It was featured in an Auto Zone commercial alongside James. The vehicle was also made into a die cast model and a large model will be included with the car at the auction.
“Barrett-Jackson was among the first auction companies to champion custom and restored hot rods in the collector car market,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Jesse’s vehicle is the perfect example of a classic car being crafted and transformed by a master in the industry. It is definitely a car to watch for at the auction.”
This will be the first Barrett-Jackson automotive lifestyle event in Southern California with a road rally, cruise-in and other activities being planned in the area before three days of the collector car auction in Costa Mesa, Calif. The event will encompass the OC Fair & Event Center grounds and also include sponsor promotions and displays, vendors, exhibitors, interactive demonstrations, parties and other festivities with hundreds of vehicles crossing the block. A Le Mans-winning 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB TdF will headline the second annual Mecum Monterey Auction, August 13-14, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort & Spa.
Driven by Jean Blaton and Leon Dernier, the Ferrari 250 GT – serial number 1321 – won 1st place in its GT class and 3rd overall at Le Mans in ’59 as the No. 11 car. Earlier that same year, it took 1st place at the 1000 km Nürburgring endurance race. After its race career, the Ferrari was privately owned by only a few collectors – the most recent owning the car since the 1970s – and this 250 GT was last seen in public in the early 1990s at Road America. Information and photos of this historically significant Ferrari may be found on the Mecum Auction website here (www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CA0810-96553).
“We are excited to offer collectors a chance to bid on this world class Tour de France 1959 Ferrari, the type of car that offers quality, provenance and is fresh to market,” said President Dana Mecum. “The list of amazing vehicles continues to grow for our upcoming Monterey Auction. We have expanded it to two full days as more than 400 investment-grade collector cars, exotic vehicles and ultra rare boats are scheduled to cross the block.”
Mecum’s Monterey Auction takes place at the luxurious Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort & Spa. Cars will be displayed outside on the beautiful Del Monte Golf Course, while the bidding arena will be staged in a 10,000-square-foot ballroom. The auction is open to the general public. Mecum will auction former NASCAR driver Kenny Irwin Jr.'s personal project vehicle, a 1934 Chevrolet
Street Rod (Lot F206), at the upcoming Original Spring Classic Auction, May 19-23 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Ind.
The cleanly rendered Street Rod, boasting a 502/505 HP big block crate engine and a floor-shifted Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission, was an ongoing project of Irwin Jr., who was fatally injured in a crash on July 7, 2000, at New Hampshire Speedway. His father, Kenny Irwin Sr., finished the project according to the original plans in honor of his son. Featuring a Canary Yellow paint scheme with Beige leather interior, the Street Rod has clocked just 300 miles since being built.
Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Kenny Irwin Jr. Foundation and its Dare to Dream Camp - a 40-acre site in Indiana where more than 1,000 underprivileged children are mentored each year. Children age five to 17 attend the camp for activities that help them mentally, physically and emotionally, including swimming, fishing, arts and crafts, nature walks, bonfires, performing arts and more.
The purchaser of this Street Rod, which will cross the auction block Friday, May 21, around 6:10 p.m., will write a check directly to the Foundation and receive a receipt for tax deduction.
"Our main goal at the foundation is to serve at-risk children from across the country, regardless of their ability to pay," said Mike Hudgins, chairman of the Kenny Irwin Jr. Foundation. "As a fellow Midwest company, we have been familiar with Mecum Auctions and the dealership owned by Dana Mecum's father, Eddie, for many years. We are very proud to work with the Mecum team to auction this special vehicle and raise money for a wonderful cause that honors Kenny Irwin Jr.'s memory."
