LAS VEGAS Sept. 19, 2010 Barrett-Jackson Auction Company will offer a striking group of exciting, eclectic and exotic vehicles at No Reserve during the 3rd Annual Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Auction on Thursday, Sept. 23, through Saturday, Sept. 25, at the luxurious Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. With 21.5 hours of live SPEED coverage, viewers and attendees will witness hundreds of spectacular vehicles crossing the block during the three days of bidding.

“From a diverse group of Chevelles to one of the world’s fastest production cars and highly respected collections, we promise to feature some of the most exciting vehicles in the world,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company. “Since we’ll be kicking off our year-long 40th anniversary celebration in the city of lights, we’re offering a broad range of vehicles that represent the evolution of the hobby. We stand true to our promise to offer something for everyone, so it’ll be a weekend to remember.”

Timing is Everything

In partnership with SPEED, Barrett-Jackson will be the center of attention as prominent cars, such as a Bugatti Veyron, SLR McLaren, Buick GSX Stage 1 and a Chevrolet 150 sedan are scheduled to take center stage during the three auction days. For the first time in Barrett-Jackson history, a timed lot number will be featured at 5:30 p.m. PST each auction day.

“Just like we pioneered internet bidding and television coverage of auctions through SPEED, we’re going a step further with timed lot numbers,” explained Steve Davis, president of the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company. “This opportunity will guarantee viewers a chance to watch a featured car cross the block at a specific time every auction day. We’re continually working on new ways to enhance the experience for our viewers and we believe timed lot numbers will do just that.”

A black and white 1957 Chevrolet 150 sedan Black Widow tribute (Lot #7600), which was restored using the SEDCO Competition Guide, will start off the timed lot number group. The Chevy features a Fuel Injected 283cid V8 engine, which puts out 283 horsepower and is scheduled to appear on SPEED at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23.

A yellow and black 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1 coupe (Lot #3660) has undergone a full frame-up rotisserie restoration and features a correct, matching numbers powertrain. Documented as GSX Stage 1 car #331, it has a 455cid V8 mated to a three-speed automatic. The Buick GSX Stage 1 is scheduled to sell at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24.

Known as the crown jewel of exotics, the 2008 Bugatti Veyron (Lot #6580) is number 80 out of 300 produced and was the fastest production car in the world in 2008. With only 11,800 miles on it, the rare high-performance car has a V16 developing 1,001 horsepower, 922 ft./lb. of torque, carbon-ceramic brakes and four Turbo chargers. The vehicle has a top speed of 253 mph and goes zero to 60 in 2.47 seconds. A car fit for any automotive enthusiast that has a need for speed, the Bugatti is sure to be a show-stopper during the auction. The Bugatti is scheduled to cross the block on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m.

The SLR McLaren Roadster convertible (Lot #6580.1) has a Crystal Antimony Grey exterior that encases a Silver Arrow Red leather interior. The luxurious ride features a 5.5 liter, V8 with a black carbon trim package. The McLaren has less than 600 miles on it and will take the stage on Saturday, Sept. 25, following the Bugatti Veyron.

Most Coveted Exotics

Exotic sports cars, such as the Lamborghini Murcielago and a stable of Ferraris will turn heads as an assorted selection will be available for bidders to choose from. The Giallo Yellow on black 2002 Lamborghini Murcielago (Lot #669.2) has a 6.2 liter with a V12 developing 571 horsepower and 479 ft./lb. of torque and a six-speed manual transmission.

“The trend to own modern collectibles, like the 2008 Veyron and 2002 Lamborghini began at Barrett-Jackson because we understood the value of getting these vehicles in front of our bidders,” explained Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “The Bugatti, McLaren, Lamborghini and Ferraris are all amazing collectibles now and destined to be a hot collectible in the future. Barrett-Jackson will continue to provide a diverse docket of these modern collectible vehicles because consumers understand the value of owning a collectible they can drive now and sell later when the timing is right.”

Barrett-Jackson will sell a 1967 Chevelle SS396 convertible (Lot #341.1) painted in stunning Bolero Red over black. Restored to an exceptionally high degree, this SS396 includes its factory four-speed manual transmission, tachometer, bucket seats and power steering. The original owner’s manual is included.

The Fabulous 50’s

Taking a step back in time, Barrett-Jackson will offer a selection of some of the 1950s most desirable cars, including those from the Rudy Lechtenberger collection. The group represents nearly 50 years of passion for cars, trucks and tractors. Ford, Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac vehicles that led the way in style, horsepower and innovation during the decade of the Fifties, will also be sold on the Barrett-Jackson stage.

In 1956, Ford offered the 312cid V8 Thunderbird Special engine option that boasted 225 horsepower with automatic transmission. The black 1956 Ford Fairlane Sunliner convertible (Lot #611.2) features a red and white interior, Continental kit and the Thunderbird Special with a three-speed manual transmission. It has been restored to original condition and was in the Lechtenberger collection for 15 years.

A top-of-the-line 1957 Harbor Blue Bel Air two door hardtop (Lot #650) will be available for purchase at Barrett-Jackson. It is equipped with the famed Fuel Injection V8 and a three-speed manual transmission. The Bel Air has undergone a rotisserie restoration and is a show winner taking home, Outstanding Detail, Gold Class and Best of Show at the Gainesville, Fla., Super Chevy Show.

“1957 is often seen as the height of innovation, performance and style of the 50s,” explained Gary Bennett, vice president of consignment at Barrett-Jackson. “The ‘57s were, and still are, among the most sought-after vehicles of that period.”

A 1957 Chevrolet Corvette convertible (Lot #651.1) with black exterior and silver coves is equipped with the legendary Ramjet Fuel Injected 283 V8 coupled to a four-speed Borg Warner T-10. The correct casting numbers for the engine block, heads and generator make this a very special 1957 Corvette. Barrett-Jackson Leverages Airband Best-of-Class Internet and Business Continuity Solution for Las Vegas Car Auction

  • 100 percent uptime even during last year’s record-setting 90mph monsoon winds

LAS VEGAS – September 14, 2010 Barrett-Jackson Auction Company and Airband Communications today announced that Airband (formerly known as Sparkplug Communications), has been selected as the Internet provider and exclusive business continuity solution for the 3rd Annual Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Auction at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on Thursday, Sept. 23, to Saturday, Sept. 25. The Las Vegas event will kick off a year-long celebration of Barrett-Jackson’s 40th Anniversary.

The Barrett-Jackson website logs more than 80 million page views and 3.5 million visitors annually, and the demand for bandwidth to manage the automotive catalog, online bidding and video streaming/archiving between the auction event location and their corporate server is significant. Airband is providing 30MB of guaranteed symmetrical bandwidth to Barrett-Jackson’s Las Vegas event via a stand-alone fixed-wireless tower transported to Mandalay Bay just for the auction.

Airband’s service provides the extra bandwidth that is critical during the event, and serves as second diverse network as part of the auction’s robust business continuity plan established by Barrett-Jackson to ensure a successful event. In the event of a cut cable, weather outage or catastrophic network failure of any kind, connectivity will be instantly re-routed to the wireless Airband network within seconds, providing a failover solution to ensure uptime.

“Barrett-Jackson must use the best-of-class technology provided by Airband to make our auctions the ultimate experience for car collectors and enthusiasts,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO, Barrett-Jackson. “Access to a 100 percent reliable network is critical and Airband offers carrier-quality high-bandwidth service. Their fixed wireless network gives us the diverse second network path that guarantees zero downtime, regardless of circumstances that might otherwise interrupt the wired network. The network they establish for our short-term need is every bit as solid and reliable as a high-dollar, permanent corporate installation.”

During the auction in Scottsdale earlier this year, a state of emergency was declared by Arizona’s Governor Jan Brewer and auction attendees experienced record-setting 90mph monsoon winds and tornado warnings; however, the Sparkplug fixed wireless network experienced zero downtime. Operating as Sparkplug Communications, Airband has provided high-speed broadband internet access and business continuity planning to previous Barrett-Jackson auctions in Scottsdale and Las Vegas.

  • 2008 Bugatti Veyron and McLaren convertible will cross the auction block on Saturday, Sept. 25
  • Five Ferrari’s will be up for sale at No Reserve

LAS VEGAS – Sept. 9, 2010 – The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company announced today that a collection of high-performance exotic cars will cross the auction block at No Reserve during the 3rd Annual Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Auction on Thursday, Sept. 23, through Saturday, Sept. 25, at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

SPEED will broadcast 21.5 hours of live coverage over the three days, with highlights to include a 2008 Bugatti Veyron and 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren convertible. The Italian super cars will include a 1988 Ferrari 512 Testarossa, a 1994 Ferrari 348 Spyder, a 2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello, a 1999 Ferrari 355 F-1 Spyder and a 2003 Ferrari 456 M GT.

“Barrett-Jackson creates a docket of amazing cars at every auction,” said Craig Jackson, chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We were the first to demonstrate the value of modern collectible vehicles, which our customers enjoy acquiring as much as they do their vintage cars. The Bugatti, McLaren and Ferraris represent a nice stable of vehicles for the serious enthusiast who wants to diversify his collection and still drive his car.”

Known as the crown jewel of exotics, the 2008 Bugatti Veyron (Lot #658) is number 80 out of 300 produced and was the fastest production car around the world in 2008. With only 11,800 original miles on it, the rare high-performance car has 1,001 horsepower, 922 ft./lb. of torque, carbon-ceramic brakes and four Turbo chargers. The vehicle has a top speed of 253 mph and goes zero to 60 in 2.47 seconds. A car fit for any automotive enthusiast that has a need for speed, the Bugatti is sure to be a show-stopper during the auction.

“Designed to outperform any car on the Autobahn and out style any vehicle in the parking lot, the Veyron is a prize that all car aficionados would like to have in their collection,” added Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “The smooth acceleration and handling of the car, powered by 1,000 horsepower, makes you feel like you’re in the cockpit of a fighter jet.”

The SLR McLaren Roadster convertible (Lot #658.1) has a Crystal Antimony Grey exterior that encases a Silver Arrow Red leather interior. The luxurious ride features a 5.5 liter, eight cylinder engine with a black carbon trim package. The McLaren will be up for grabs during the Barrett-Jackson auction from the original owner with less than 600 miles.

Italy’s prized-auto manufacturer will also be well represented at this year’s auction with both V12 and V8 powered Ferraris available. The 2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello (Lot #641.1) features a 5.5 liter, 485 horsepower V12 mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The sophisticated black exterior and tan interior combination makes this Ferrari stand out from the crowd. With a mere 16,000 miles on it, the 550 comes complete with service history and all of its books. The 1999 Ferrari 355 F-1 Spyder (Lot #652.2) is a traditional Italian sports machine with less than 10,500 miles. Its 3.5 liter V8 is connected to a F-1 paddle transmission; the car is in a desirable Giallo Yellow exterior with Nero Black top.

“Collectors who favor Italian muscle will love these two Ferraris,” noted Davis. “The rare sports cars both have low mileage and were kept in pristine condition.”

Other Ferraris in the line-up include a 1988 Ferrari 512 Testarossa (Lot #375), with a 12 cylinder engine, five-speed manual transmission and only 31,200 original miles. The 1994 Ferrari 348 Spyder (Lot #628) is Ferrari Red with tan leather interior and a five-speed manual transmission. The 2003 Ferrari 456 M GT (Lot #653) has 6,200 original miles, Hi-Fi stereo system and a satellite navigation system. The original bill of sale and service record are also included with the car.

MARENGO, Ill. - Mecum Auctions returned to Monterey for a successful second annual auction at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel & Spa on the Del Monte Golf Course, where the top sale was a rare ex-DeLorenzo 1967 Corvette L88 Roadster - one of only 20 produced and the earliest RPO-ordered L88 known to exist - that sold on the block for $1,250,000.

With a high-quality inventory of remarkable collector cars, Mecum's Monterey Auction had total gross sales (excluding buyer's premium) of $15.4 million. Combined with post-block sales that continue to occur in The Bid Goes On - Mecum's program to market vehicles that don't sell on the auction block - the company estimates final sales for the auction will be close to $20 million.

"While last year's event was monumental because of our record-breaking $7.25 million sale of the 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe, this year's event was hugely successful in its own right. In fact, if you take the Shelby out of the equation, we more than doubled our sales over last year," said President Dana Mecum. "As Monterey's only free, open-to-the-public auction, we have truly carved our own market niche. With growing brand awareness, Mecum in its sophomore year has established itself as a primary destination on the peninsula and has built a very firm cornerstone upon which to have a long-term event in Monterey."

As the first auction company to bring live television to the peninsula with its Discovery Communications' HD Theater show "Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars & More," the Monterey Auction drew thousands of enthusiasts eager to watch the film crew in action and to bid on the investment-grade vehicles. Mecum offered more than 400 collector cars at the two-day auction.

In addition to cars, Mecum entered into the vintage wooden boat arena in 2010, selling five world-class vessels at the Monterey Auction - four of which made it into the top 10 sales.

Mecum's Monterey Top 10 Sales (all sales reflect hammer prices) were:

1. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Convertible (Lot S125) at $1,250,000
2. 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Berlinetta (Lot S111.1) at $1,250,000

Mecum Sells Five Vintage Wooden Boats at 2010 Monterey Auction

Mecum Auctions has successfully expanded into the vintage boat market, selling five out of five rare boats offered during the Mecum Monterey Auction, Aug. 13-14, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel & Spa on the Del Monte Golf Course.

“These unique boats were a popular attraction at our second annual Monterey Auction, drawing admirers to the peninsula for a chance to add one of these desirable vessels to their collection,” said President Dana Mecum. “In fact, four of these boats made it into our top 10 overall sales from the two-day auction, which featured more than 400 vehicles up for bid. And like many classic cars, the collectable boats will continue to appreciate in value for their new owners.”

Topping the list at Mecum Monterey was a 1922 Hacker Gentlemans Race Boat housing a 400 horsepower Liberty V12 Aircraft engine, which sold on the block for $320,000. The boat was custom designed by John L. Hacker as the Apache II and featured a 29-foot Gold Cup type hull specially ordered by automotive designer Norman DeVaux. DeVaux raced Apache II during the 1920s and 1930s at Lake Tahoe, taking home several wins.
In addition to the Hacker, Mecum Auctions sold a 1940 Chris-Craft Racing Runabout for $291,500; a 1965 Riva Aquarama for $290,000; a 1929 Hacker Craft Deluxe Runabout for $225,000; and a 1955 Chris-Craft Cobra 131 HP for $90,000. All sales reflect hammer prices.

Mecum began its foray into offering unique boats during its Kissimmee Auction in January, where a 1966 Riva Super Aquarama Series II Prototype sold for $775,000. The boat-specific auctions continue later this year with The Warner Collection, a vintage wooden boat auction featuring more than 100 boats, rare engines and memorabilia on Oct. 15-16 near Minneapolis, Minn. Mecum also has announced an exclusive event to auction John Hay “Jock” Whitney’s specially commissioned Elegante motor yacht at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show on Oct. 30, 2010.
