The 2011 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event in Palm Beach, Florida will play host to one of the most exciting new sports cars to hit the market in recent years – the Perana Z-one. Designed by legendary Italian coachbuilder, Zagato, the Perana Z-one is a back-to-basics sports car that puts the emphasis back on driver involvement. It builds on Zagato’s nine-decade-long history of building specially-bodied sports and GT cars for some of Europe’s most esteemed makes. The Perana Z-one will have a place of honor in the Showcase Pavilion at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach event April 7-9, 2011.
The Perana Z-one was built as a present from Zagato to itself, a project initiated to show what the firm would build if given a clean sheet of paper. The striking design recalls the dual-purpose racers of the ’50s and ’60s, with elegant Grand Touring looks and blistering performance. With 430-505 horsepower and a curb weight of less than 2,600 pounds, the Perana Z-one goes as well as it looks. In fact, no other sports car on the market offers the Perana Z-one’s combination of style, heritage, performance and value.
Available with your choice of a Corvette LS3, LSA or LS7 engine, the Perana Z-one also recaptures the spirit of the great Italian-American hybrids of the 1960s, combining Italian styling and American muscle. The Perana Z-one is being sold in the U.S. exclusively through Superformance Distribution, a company known for its unfaltering customer service and huge dealer network. Sold as a TKM (Turn-Key Minus), customers have their choice of powerplant and installer. The base price of the Perana Z-one roller has been set at just a fraction of what other Zagato-badged vehicles have sold for.
Limited to just 999 units per annum, the Perana Z-one is sure to be a future collectible. For buyers wanting something even more unique, the Barrett-Jackson 40th Anniversary Perana Z-one is available in commemoration of the best-known auction house’s 40 years in offering some of the most exquisite collector car events around. The Barrett-Jackson edition Perana Z-one will be limited to just 40 units and will include a specially designed David Yurman watch and keychain. Like Zagato, David Yurman is known for its leading edge design work and reputation as one of the most prestigious names among collectors of fine luxury goods.
The Barrett-Jackson 40th Anniversary Edition Perana Z-one to be displayed in Palm Beach is painted black cherry, one of the new shades in the Sherwin-Williams Planet Color Barrett-Jackson line of automotive paints. Other colors are available. It also features special black and red wheels, evoking the Barrett-Jackson logo colors. All 40 of the special editions will be presented with a boxed David Yurman watch and Perana logo keychain. The first 20 Barrett-Jackson 40th Anniversary Perana Z-one models will be presented with an even more exclusive David Yurman watch featuring a black diamond bezel.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Feb. 14, 2011 – Honoring its past and looking to the future, Barrett-Jackson Auction Co. LLC will offer the option for both Reserve and No Reserve consignment applications exclusively at the company’s 9th annual Palm Beach auction to be held April 7-9 at the Americraft Expo Center at the South Florida Fairgrounds.
Vehicles with an agreed estimated value above $50,000 will be considered for Reserve placement, creating a hybrid environment that appeals to consignors and buyers within all price ranges.
From the first Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale in 1971 until today, the company has offered a combination of Reserve and No Reserve style sales. In recent years, Barrett-Jackson has become well known for being the only collector car auction house to produce auction events that accept exclusively No Reserve consignments, a format that was market-driven and customer-supported. With this auction format—and by offering a true No Reserve platform with real buyers and sellers—the company has continually provided an accurate snapshot of the collector car market at any given time.
Since January 2005, Barrett-Jackson has offered this all No Reserve format, which is unique in the auction industry. This was introduced in Scottsdale in 2005 and has continued since that time at all Barrett-Jackson auction venues, which now include Palm Beach, Orange County and Las Vegas.
In the past 6 years alone, Barrett-Jackson has sold nearly $1 billion of collector vehicles at No Reserve. This represents approximately 13,000 cars across the Barrett-Jackson auction block.
Barrett-Jackson just completed the Scottsdale 2011 auction which was the company’s largest single auction event in its 40-year history: more than 1,200 collector cars, all offered at No Reserve, with total auction sales greater than $70 million. In fact, this was the largest single No Reserve collector car auction in the history of the industry.
Even though its auction sales have been exclusively No Reserve in recent years, Barrett-Jackson has maintained its commitment to carefully screening all consignment applications and assessing estimated values. This will continue in the careful consideration of both Reserve and No Reserve applications for Palm Beach.
“Throughout Barrett-Jackson’s history, we have always remained committed to having an open dialogue with our customers about their wants and needs,” said Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson. “In the course of this dialogue, we have heard from some of our customers that they are committed to the Barrett-Jackson auction model and the Barrett-Jackson No Reserve format that offers a fair platform for buying and selling collector cars to the largest pool of qualified bidders anywhere in the world. On the other hand, we heard from others who would like to participate in a Barrett-Jackson auction but have cars they aren’t comfortable selling at No Reserve. These same customers have asked us to consider re-introducing a Reserve element into our auction format so they can participate in Barrett-Jackson auctions.”
Over four decades, Barrett-Jackson has continually refined its business plan to ensure that it stays one step ahead of the marketplace and welcomes new people to the Barrett-Jackson auction tradition. For additional details, or to submit a consignment or bidder application for Palm Beach, please visit www.barrett-jackson.com.

American Motorcyclist Association Hall of Famer Gavin Trippe to Lead Department
Industry-leading auction company Mecum Auctions has demonstrated its expertise in bringing buyers and sellers together for more than two decades. Now, that passion has expanded into another market niche as Mecum launches its new motorcycle division to offer significant consignments for the collector motorcycle industry.
Mecum’s motorcycle division, led by American Motorcyclist Association Hall of Famer Gavin Trippe, will consign and market world-class collector motorcycles during upcoming auctions, including Dana Mecum’s 24th Annual Original Spring Classic Auction, May 17-22, in Indianapolis, Ind. and the Monterey Auction, Aug. 18-20, in Monterey, Calif.
"The motorcycle fraternity has been largely ignored in the current auction market, but now there will be a major platform to expose rare and valuable bikes to collectors," said Trippe. “The beauty of collecting bikes is that five bikes can occupy the same space as one car and you can ride many of them, or even hang one on the wall of a 'man cave' or corporate office! Even the most expensive motorcycles can be affordable and serve as great investments. I am excited to work with Dana Mecum, an avid collector himself, and commit 100% to this new Mecum division.”
A legendary motocross and road race promoter, Trippe brings more than 45 years of motorcycle knowledge to the Mecum team. He previously organized and executed the 2006 and 2007 Monterey Classic Bike Auctions, having worked with many of the top collectors both in the U.S. and Europe. Trippe also helped with such collections as The Otis Chandler Collection and the famed Barber Motorsports Vintage Museum in Alabama, home of one of the best collections in the world.
With the launch of this new division, motorcycle collectors can expect to see noteworthy American and European motorcycles of all kinds cross the Mecum auction block throughout 2011. Contact Gavin Trippe at gavin@mecum.com to consign your classic motorcycle today.

- The hottest from Hollywood and pro sports come out for 40th anniversary Barrett-Jackson Auction
- Scottsdale auction generates nearly $70 million in total sales, topping the previous year’s sales
- More than 230,000 flock to Barrett-Jackson with more than 50 percent of bidders new to auction
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Jan. 26, 2011 – Barrett-Jackson Auction Company, “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™”, celebrated its 40th anniversary with sports and Hollywood royalty, including Tim Allen, Bret Michaels and Randy Johnson. Nearly $70 million worth of Hot Rods, Resto-Mods, pre-war classics, exotics, muscle cars and contemporary collectibles crossed the block from Jan. 17-23, at WestWorld of Scottsdale in front of a quarter of a million cheering people. Their energy charged the 40th Annual Scottsdale Auction, which featured more than 1,200 cars selling at No Reserve. All the entertainment was captured on SPEED with 40 hours of live coverage.
“Barrett-Jackson has become far more than just an auction, it’s a celebration that attracts everyone from captains of industry to celebrities and athletes who want to be part of this fantastic event,” said Craig Jackson, chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We sold more vehicles for more money than any other collector car event in North America. We proved the collector car hobby is growing with record breaking attendance, as well as a record number of new bidders and consignors. This is no longer an ‘old boy’s club’. We’ve transformed into a mainstream event much like the NFL Championship game, Kentucky Derby or New Year’s Eve in Times Square.”
“A-list” celebrities and athletes were not the only ones who attended Barrett-Jackson. Over a quarter of a million consignors, bidders, fans and visitors walked through the gates to check out the vendor, exhibitor and sponsor activities. These included an on-site nightclub, Ride N’ Drives provided by Ford and GM, fashions shows, a panel by Corvette Market, seminars and much more. Barrett-Jackson experienced nearly a 30 percent increase in attendance from the 2010 auction, despite competing with NFL playoff games.
New bidders and consignors were also attracted to the No Reserve auction with nearly 50 percent of the total bidders taking home vehicles from Barrett-Jackson for the first time. More than 45 percent of consignors were also new to the Barrett-Jackson scene. Popularity among younger generations was apparent among the Barrett-Jackson attendees with many of them snapping up top selling muscle cars and contemporary collectibles.
The roster of celebrities at the event was staggering. From Hollywood’s A-list came Tim Allen, Bret Michaels, David Foster, Valerie Bertinelli and Bill Goldberg, who were just a few checking out the latest rides garnering attention in the hobby. Both Michaels and Goldberg consigned personal vehicles for the 40th anniversary event and appeared together several times on the auction block for screaming fans. Celebrities who consigned vehicles included Sylvester Stallone, Alan Jackson and Jesse James.
Professional athletes were attracted to the excitement of the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale event. Pat “Pat the Bat” Burrell was among the thousands in attendance; he is currently an outfielder for the 2010 World Series Championship San Francisco Giants. Randy Johnson, nicknamed “The Big Unit” in his Major League Baseball days, was also on hand to celebrate the Barrett-Jackson 40th anniversary while Jacoby Ellsbury, a center fielder for the Boston Red Sox, bought a 1970 Chevrolet Camaro custom two-door coupe. Houston Astros infielder Bill Hall also purchased a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle custom coupe during the event.
Motorsports athletes came out in big numbers to witness the market latest trends. Celebrated Indy 500 race car driver Parnelli Jones returned to Barrett-Jackson again to provide commentary and support for the sale of a 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca coupe that raised money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Two-time Indy 500 champion Arie Luyendyk and Motorsports Hall of Fame of America member Tom Sneva stood alongside Barrett-Jackson fans to cheer on the bidding competitions.
Valerie Thompson, a two-time Land Speed Record Holder and NHRA team owner, drove multiple motorcycles across the block, including the “Big Toe” monster bike, The Guinness Book of World Record’s “Tallest Rideable Motorcycle”. Richard Petty, who won the NASCAR Championship seven times, was a returning guest to Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale, while Rick Hendrick bought 23 vehicles at No Reserve to replace the 13 vehicles he sold.
“High-profile Hollywood personalities discovered our auctions a few years ago and the number of them attending keeps growing,” noted Jackson. “They can’t get enough of the high energy and excitement, and the opportunity to enjoy all our automotive lifestyle activities. It’s entertainment that you can’t get anywhere else. From the intensity of the auction block to the luxurious spa and shopping excursions, people know there’s nothing in the world like Barrett-Jackson.”
Hollywood’s greatest weren’t the only celebrities that generated headlines during the week. The 1963 Pontiac Bonneville “JFK ambulance” (Lot #1277) sold for $132,000. The vehicle was surrounded by mystery relating to its provenance, which Barrett-Jackson worked to help its consignor unravel.
A recipient of the 2010 World’s Top 100 Most Ethical Companies Award, Barrett-Jackson provided documentation and evidence relating to the vehicle for the public and media during the auction to draw their own conclusions.
“We pride ourselves on being a transparent, honest and open company,” added Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “We stood by our consignor and provided documents from both sides of the argument. This gave people the opportunity to make their own decision. We’re happy the vehicle found a new home and the bidder is pleased with the purchase.”
Sponsors Ford and GM made charity a priority during the automotive auction week. Executives from Ford, including President of the Americas/Executive VP of Ford Motor Co. Mark Fields, were on stage when a one-off 2012 Ford Boss Mustang Laguna Seca coupe (Lot #1296) sold for $450,000, with all proceeds benefitting JDRF. Chevrolet executives unveiled a 2011 Camaro Indy 500 pace car (Lot #1284) on Jan. 20, to an exclusive invitation-only audience. The collectible GM racer was auctioned on Saturday to benefit the David Foster Foundation and generated $225,000. Both vehicles represent part of the more than $4 million raised during the 2011 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction.
“Through our partnerships with Ford and GM, we unveiled two of the most unique and collectible cars ever built” explained Davis. “They generously donated those vehicles to benefit two deserving charities through the No Reserve sale by generating tremendous buzz among collector car owners. They chose to do this at Barrett-Jackson because it’s the only place in the world to connect with so many who share their passion for cars.”
The 2012 Ford Boss Mustang took honors for the single highest sale of the auction. The vehicle was specifically produced by Ford Motor Company for the 40th anniversary Barrett-Jackson event. It was created with a unique paint color to commemorate the first-place Boss 302 finish at the 1970 Trans-Am series opener.
The highest selling package was a car, boat and trailer trio. A limited edition Crystal Red Metallic 2008 Corvette LE Z06 coupe (Lot #1303.2), sold with its colors matching 2010 Marine Technology Inc. Catamaran custom 44’ performance boat (Lot #1303) and 2006 American Tilt trailer (Lot #1303.1) for $742,500.
