Winner Of Bosch’s “The Gut Check Challenge” Selects Classic 4X4 At Mecum Auto Auction In Monterey, CA

Bosch has announced that the Grand Prize winner of “The Gut Check Challenge” – Mike Collins of Jourdanton, TX – selected a classic 4x4 at the Mecum Auto Auction in Monterey, CA. Collins won his bid on a restored 1977 International Scout 4x4 and, per the rules of the competition, Bosch contributed $25K toward the purchase. “The Gut Check Challenge” was an online contest sponsored by Bosch Spark Plugs and held from June 6 to July 18 on the social media site, Facebook (www.facebook.com/boschautoparts).

Collins topped a list of thousands of auto enthusiasts, technicians and do-it-yourself (DIY) motorists from across the United States that participated in the contest. The ‘Challenge’ was designed to test a contestant’s automotive know-how and spark plug smarts through multiple-choice questions followed by a final round of three write-in questions.

A professional diesel mechanic who enjoys working on cars in his spare time, Collins and his teenage son, Chris, also a car enthusiast, attended the prestigious Mecum Auto Auction in Monterey, CA (Aug. 16-18, 2012), courtesy of Bosch. There, Wayne Carini, host of Velocity TV Network's Chasing Classic Cars advised him to “go with his gut” and bid on his ‘dream car.’ Per the terms of the contest’s agreement, if Collins won the bid, Bosch would contribute up to $25,000 toward the purchase.

And he did.

His success was covered live in a television broadcast by Velocity TV Network. It aired Collins’ entire experience from when he placed his bid at the auction to his ultimately winning his ‘dream car.’ Immediately following the live show, the network re-aired it for its viewers. The Monterey Mecum auction will re-air on Velocity TV Network on the following dates and times:

Besides broadcast coverage, Collins was accorded significant honor when Mecum Auctions gave him Gold Bidder status that entitled him to a front row seat during the bidding.

The International Harvester Scout was one of the first production 4x4 vehicles. Originally built as a competitor to the Jeep, the Scout was manufactured in very limited numbers between 1961 and 1980 in the United States. It is the precursor of today’s wildly popular array of SUV designs.

“‘The Gut Check Challenge’ has been a tremendous opportunity for Bosch to connect with its community of ‘friends’ and ‘followers’ on Facebook,” said Monica Christensen, Bosch Brand Manager. “‘The Gut Check Challenge’ competition played off of our current advertising campaign theme, ‘The Gut Knows’ quality automotive parts … like Bosch spark plugs,” she said.

Bosch original equipment design, materials and processes represent the best of OE technology making Bosch OE fine wire spark plugs the line that delivers improved ignitability and performance for extended service life. “Once again the Mecum Daytime Auction on the Monterey Peninsula has been a resounding success with more than 700 cars crossing the auction block,” said Dana Mecum, President, Mecum Auctions. “Thousands of bidders and spectators turned out for the event. We are confident that our 2012 showing has been the best yet with a sell-through rate of 63 percent with $31 million in sales.”

Collins could have chosen any of the popular muscle cars, sports cars, or hot rods that crossed the auction block in Monterey. But, in fact, Collins has always had a passion for the last-generation Scout 4x4.

On winning the bid on his ‘dream car,’ Collins said, “This is a dream come true for me. Never could I have imagined that one day I would actually own a 1977 International Scout 4x4. Wayne asked me to ‘go with my gut’ and I did and won. Even better, who knew I would get the opportunity to experience the Mecum Auto Auction with my son? I am so grateful!” Reliable Carriers will be transporting the car to his Texas home.

Does Collins use Bosch spark plugs? You bet he does. His gut knows that all spark plugs are not created equal and Bosch is a brand that he can trust.

Barrett-Jackson Partners With The Pep Boys – Manny, Moe & Jack To Provide Quality Car Care Products To Enthusiasts Across The Country

Three-Part Premium Paint Restoration and Car Care System
Available
at Pep Boys Locations Beginning Summer 2012

Philadelphia (August 7, 2012) – Two of the most well-known brands in the automotive industry announced a new partnership today, one that will make top-quality paint restoration and car care products easily accessible. The Pep Boys – Manny, Moe & Jack (NYSE: PBY), the nation’s leading automotive aftermarket service and retail chain, has partnered with Barrett-Jackson Auction Company as the exclusive distributor of Barrett-Jackson’s car care products within its new Automobile Restoration System.

The three-part Automobile Restoration System – which includes abrasives, paint and car care – will be available at Pep Boys locations across the country beginning August 1 and offers car collectors and enthusiasts an easy, unique way to complete the restoration of car projects from start to finish.

“Pep Boys is proud to team up with Barrett-Jackson and offer specialized paints, world-class finishing and detailing products to all of our automotive enthusiast customers, from the collector to the daily driver,” said Scott Webb, Executive Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing for Pep Boys. “We will feature this premier product line in Pep Boys locations across the country.”

The Barrett-Jackson Automobile Restoration System was the result of a strategic partnership with abrasives manufacturer Ali Industries, paint manufacturer Sherwin-Williams®, surface-finishing products manufacturer Farecla and a special licensing agreement with Barrett-Jackson.

“Barrett-Jackson is proud to have our products on the shelves of one of America’s oldest and most respected retailers,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “Pep Boys’ commitment to quality and the automotive lifestyle is what sets them apart from the rest, and I couldn’t be happier with this new partnership.”

In an effort to make the Automobile Restoration System even easier for Pep Boys’ consumers, Barrett-Jackson divided the abrasives, paint and car care products into convenient four-step processes, making the systems easy to use for even the casual do-it-yourselfer.

Abrasives line by Ali Industries, Inc.:

The Barrett-Jackson Premium Abrasives line by Ali Industries offers a full range of abrasives ranging from 40 to 3000 grit for every grinding, sanding, finishing and feathering need.  Ali Industries incorporates their exclusive G2™ technology which provides razor sharp fast-cutting grain, plastic film backing for tear resistance, anti-clog coating to resist material loading, and an advanced resin coating to ensure maximum grain adhesion; all attributing to 4X longer life than commonly found abrasives in retailers today.  Products are available as VELCRO® and stick-on PSA (Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive) film discs in six-inch diameters and 5.5 x 9-inch waterproof abrasive sheets. Coupled with the available body files and a variety of other accessories, the Barrett-Jackson Premium Abrasives line ensures a professional finish.

Primer, paint and clear coats by Sherwin-Williams® Automotive Finishes:

Sherwin-Williams® created a unique four-step process for this new Restoration System that includes prep products, primer kits, color paint kits, and an optional clear coat kit. From body prep to the application of primer, color and then optional clear coat finishing, each of the four kits are very specific in nature and provide the consumer with the tools and products to make each step in the restoration process easy to follow. Each kit contains all of the tools required to mix and prepare your primer, color or clear coat for spraying which simplifies the paint purchase process. The Barrett-Jackson Restoration System allows automotive enthusiasts to achieve a professional quality paint finish for under $500.

Signature car care line by Farecla:

After body prep and paint work the next most important step is keeping that new car shine. Barrett-Jackson’s Signature Car Care Line – which is also presented in a four-step process – includes all the products necessary to restore and protect and repair the finish of a vehicle to award-winning condition.

Remove surface grime and contaminants with Show Shine Wash, a luxurious hydro-cleansing wash that gently leaves bodywork spotless. For scratches and unsightly imperfections, Rapid Scratch Remover repairs and restores a car’s finish to reveal a prestigious paint surface. For fading and stubborn swirl marks, Farecla developed Barrett-Jackson’s Deep Shine Micro-Polish as a quick and effective way to treat these unattractive enemies of a show-car shine. Finally, Rapid Detailer is an all-surface spray detailer for maintaining a show car look on all exterior and interior surfaces.

“Barrett-Jackson has been a fan of Manny, Moe & Jack for many years and we’re excited to continue offering quality products to fans around the country,” said Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson. “We’re looking forward to becoming a part of Pep Boys’ history.”

Bosch Announces Mike Collins Of Jourdanton, TX As The Winner Of "The Gut Check Challenge"

Bosch has announced that Mike Collins of Jourdanton, TX, is the winner of the “The Gut Check Challenge” – an online competition sponsored by Bosch Spark Plugs and held from June 6 to July 18 on the social media site, Facebook (www.facebook.com/boschautoparts).

A combination of multiple-choice questions followed by a final round of three write-in questions tested a contestant’s automotive know-how and spark plug smarts. Thousands of auto enthusiasts, technicians and do-it-yourself (DIY) motorists throughout the United States participated in the competition.

Grand prize winner Mike Collins is a professional diesel mechanic who works on cars as a hobby. Collins and his teenage son, Chris, a budding car enthusiast, will attend the prestigious Mecum Auto Auction in Monterey, CA (Aug. 16-18, 2012), courtesy of Bosch. There, Wayne Carini, host of Velocity TV Network's "Chasing Classic Cars" will help Collins bid on a ‘dream car’ that father and son can work on together to suit their personal needs and taste. If he wins the bid, Bosch will contribute up to $25,000 toward the purchase.

Bosch’s “The Gut Check Challenge” is a chance to acknowledge and reward our Facebook fans for ‘following’ our continuing efforts to educate the marketplace about the most current spark plug technology,” said Monica Christensen, Brand Manager for Bosch. “The competition was consistent with our current advertising campaign stressing that “The Gut Knows” quality automotive parts … like Bosch spark plugs,” Christensen said.

Bosch OE fine wire Iridium and Platinum spark plugs are made for American, Asian and European engines to meet or exceed OE specifications. Bosch original equipment design, materials and processes represent the best of OE technology making the Bosch OE fine wire spark plug the line that delivers improved ignitability and performance for extended service life. And, each comes with a multi-year money back performance satisfaction guarantee.
Christensen emphasized, “They are not just OE, they’re Bosch OE.”

The Mecum Auction Company specializes in the sale of collector cars, classic motorcycles and road art sales. Numerous Mecum auctions are held each year throughout the United States and broadcast live on Discovery’s Velocity Network. www.mecum.com.

“This is our fourth year conducting the Mecum Daytime Auction on the Monterey Peninsula and we are expecting more than 750 cars to cross the auction block,” said Dana Mecum, President, Mecum Auctions. “As in the past, we are expecting thousands of bidders and spectators to be in attendance. In 2011, the Mecum auction at Monterey resulted in a sell-through rate of 65 percent with $25 million in sales. We are confident that this time around we will exceed that figure.”

Commenting on his winning “The Gut Check Challenge,” Collins said, “I noticed the competition on Facebook and thought I’d give it a shot. I’ve never won anything of consequence but I figured, what the heck! I am so flattered and grateful. I am really excited about the opportunity to experience the auction with my son. …I couldn’t have planned a more perfect dream trip!”

Collins, a third-generation professional mechanic, changes his own spark plugs. No wonder his ‘gut’ knew the right answers.
