Mecum Auctions completed their second annual Dallas Auction, held September 5-8, 2012, packing over 1,200 vehicles into The Dallas Convention Center and experienced competitive bidding from start to finish throughout the 4-day event. Total sales for the Dallas auction were $31,618,778 and are expected to easily surpass the $32 million mark once the final totals from Bid Goes On sales are factored in later this week.
The Cars of Hallbrook were presented on opening day Wednesday, with the entire sale broadcast live on Discovery’s Velocity Network. An incredible group of 96 vehicles offered exclusively with reserves, The Cars of Hallbrook brought a fantastic collection of exceptional American automobiles worthy of a stand-alone sale together with the multi-day consignment auction. “We essentially had an auction within an auction,” said President and CEO Dana Mecum. “By offering the collection on its own day within a consignment auction on our regular schedule, the cars were able to benefit from all the additional promotion, higher bidder attendance and live national TV exposure associated with our regularly scheduled event, and the results speak for themselves.”
Total sales for The Cars of Hallbrook Collection surpassed $5.2 million, with 82 vehicles going to new homes thanks to an incredible 85% sell-through rate. Topping the list of sold vehicles was a 2005 Ford GT (Lot W49) with only 1,021 miles hammering for $187,500. In fact, three cars from the Hallbrook Collection made the list of top ten sales for the entire Dallas Auction, including Lot W46, a 1938 Lincoln K Semi-Collapsible Cabriolet with coachwork by Brunn & Company, and Lot W48, a gorgeously restored 1956 Lincoln Premiere Convertible
The ensuing three days of the Dallas Auction saw huge crowds and intense bidding on a total of over 1,200 vehicles, 808 of which were hammered sold for an impressive sell-through rate of nearly 70%. The top sale price of the auction was garnered by Lot S86, a well-documented Triple Black 1967 Chevrolet Corvette 427/435 HP Convertible selling for $285,000. Coming a close second was Lot S136.1, a certified real-deal 1969 Yenko Camaro changing hands for $240,000.
The results showed that the Mecum Dallas Auction had doubled in size in just its second year, confirming that everything is bigger in Texas!

Legendary Shelby Prototype Roars into Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale January 13-20
Scottsdale, Ariz. (September 5, 2012) – Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™, announced today that the newly-restored legendary Shelby Prototype, dubbed “The Green Hornet,” (VIN 8F01S104288) is scheduled to cross the auction block as part of its Salon Collection in Scottsdale, January 13-20, 2013.
Arguably one of the rarest and most desirable Ford Mustangs in the world, The 1968 Green Hornet enjoys the distinction of being one of the very few factory prototypes that survived the crusher. It represents a rolling history of what Ford and Shelby American were producing in the heyday of the American muscle car era and is considered one of the most innovative and unique vehicles of its time.
The Green Hornet Rises:
In 1967, the Ford team was impressed with a prototype Mustang called “Li’l Red,” which inspired the “California Special” also known as the GT/CS. They liked this model so much, that they wanted their design team to study the feasibility of creating a nationally available version of the GT/CS, which would be marketed as a GT/Sport Coupe. As a result of this effort, two prototypes were built. One of those prototypes was VIN 8F01S104288, a Lime Gold, 1968 Mustang notchback, with a deluxe Ivy Gold interior, 390 V8 engine and C6 automatic transmission.
After completing the show circuit, the decision was made to not move forward with the GT/SC program. Instead of being scrapped, the lime Gold notchback was sent to Shelby American to once again become a prototype, this time for a different kind of Mustang…a Shelby.
Many modifications were made to the car, including an experimental Conelec fuel-injection system, independent rear suspension and a unique rear disc brake configuration, making The Green Hornet the platform for innovation in design, performance and handling.
What resulted was an experimental Shelby called EXP 500, a prototype that would become fondly known as “The Green Hornet.” The car eventually turned into a pet-project of Fred Goodell, Chief Engineer at Shelby American, and both he and Carroll Shelby spent a lot of time testing and developing components for this project.
For decades, it was thought that The Green Hornet had been destroyed like other concept cars of the era and its celebrated existence had become nothing more than urban legend. But both fate and Goodell’s fondness for the car intervened, saving The Green Hornet from the crusher and allowing it to slip into the mainstream where it enjoyed a somewhat mundane existence for many years, until it was rediscovered and restored back to its former glory.
“The ‘One and only Green Hornet’ as Carroll liked to say, is an incredibly significant piece of Ford, Shelby and muscle car history with a documented provenance verifying its authenticity,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We couldn’t be prouder to have a vehicle that was so ahead of its time, crossing our block.”
