Mercedes-Benz Offerings At Mecum In Monterey

The Mecum Daytime Auction in Monterey, Calif., has consistently offered some of the most unique, desirable and highly respected vintage race cars, European classics and more. Though this year is no exception to that variety of remarkable offerings, Mercedes-Benz is one marque that is standing out from the crowd with an exceptional lineup of more than a dozen classics including no fewer than four 300SLs. Detailed below is just a handful of what will cross the auction block this Aug. 14-16 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course.

“Mecum is pleased to present an incredible group of Mercedes at this year’s Daytime Auction,” notes Mecum Auctions’ President and Founder Dana Mecum. “Wonderful examples from both pre- and post-war era are sprinkled throughout all three days of the event with values ranging from entry-level to investment-grade collectibles. This type of variety is something one can only find at a Mecum Auction.”

Auction gates will open daily at 8 a.m. and general admission will be available at the gate for $20 per person, per day; children 12 and younger will receive complimentary admission. Portions of the auction will be broadcast on NBC Sports and Esquire Networks and on Mecum’s website at www.mecum.com. Mecum.com is updated daily with the latest consignments including detailed descriptions and photographs of the vehicles. 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing (Lot S188)
The Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing was one of the automotive sensations of the 1950s and today remains one of the most iconic cars of the entire 20th century. Inspired by the lightweight racing coupes that dominated the Carrera Panamericana, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Mille Miglia and the Nürburgring 1000 Kilometers in 1952, the 300SL actually improved on the performance of the racers with the use of Bosch fuel injection on the slanted three-liter inline-6 engine which, in addition to the gearbox, independent front suspension and swing-axle rear end were borrowed from the 300 S saloon model for budgetary reasons. The famed gullwing doors were necessitated by the 300SL’s novel multi-tubular space frame, which incorporated stressed side sections for increased structural rigidity. The subsequent high side sills dictated that the doors be hinged on the roof, actually constituting the side windows and part of the roof itself. Slanting the six-cylinder engine and converting it to a dry-sump oiling system reduced the height of the front bonnet, improving aerodynamics and aesthetics at the same time. The 300SL’s virtually unadorned body gave the car an elegant, even unaggressive air that belied its astonishing performance.

The idea for a road-going 300SL was the product of the fertile mind of New York City imported-car dealer Max Hoffman. Known as the Baron of Park Avenue, the Austrian-born businessman was almost singlehandedly responsible for the deluge of European cars that flooded postwar America, including vehicles from Volkswagen, Porsche and Alfa Romeo. Watching the success of the lightweight SL racing coupes, Hoffman brashly guaranteed an order for 1,000 production Gullwing coupes for the American market, prompting the factory to abandon production of its competition cars and opt for the cash flow that would result from Hoffman’s proposal.

While the production 300SL was best known for its rally career, which included wins in the Liege-Rome-Liege event and the 1956 European Championship, it also scored such notable road racing achievements as John Fitch’s fifth place overall finish in the 1955 Mille Miglia in one of 29 alloy-bodied versions, all underscoring the 300SL’s bedrock reliability.

A previous owner of this restored 300SL drove it in the 2011 Colorado Grand rally as a last-minute substitute for the car he originally entered. With no preparation, he was able to drive the entire 1,000 miles with absolutely no issues. In addition, the car toured from Vancouver, British Columbia, to the Arctic Circle in Alaska, a trip of over 2,600 miles. Beyond its legendary reliability, the 300SL is one of the handsomest cars ever. Originally finished in Silver on Blue, this superb 300SL now sports a gorgeous Red leather interior with custom-made matching Red leather luggage.

According to its build sheet, this 300SL left the factory with coveted Rudge knock-off wheels, a rarity today because they were often damaged and were expensive to replace. While it wore standard wheels for the photography, it will be offered at auction with a fully reconditioned set of factory original Rudge wheels.

1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster (Lot S191)
This early-production 1957 300SL Roadster was delivered new to its first owner in Monterrey, Mexico. In the early 1990s it was sold to a classic-car dealer in Mexico City who performed a frame-off restoration and engine rebuild. The next owner, a Florida collector, kept the car in excellent running condition. It was delivered to Classic Restoration of Denver, Colorado, in 2012 for a complete no-expense-spared restoration. In addition to exacting body and paint work, the interior was completely refurbished to extraordinary quality, exceeding factory original standards. Sound-deadening and heat-reflecting materials were installed throughout the interior to reduce road and mechanical noise to an absolute minimum, resulting in an exceptionally quiet ride. Using the original radiator tanks, Classic Restoration equipped the car with its racing radiator conversion, a new offset core increasing cooling capacity by 30 percent while maintaining stock appearance. More subtle cosmetic modifications were performed during the restoration that set this magnificent 300SL apart from almost all others. The front bumper guards and outside mirrors were removed, further adding to the car’s clean, uncluttered beauty. Additionally, the right front fender, which is normally almost imperceptibly asymmetrical to the left side, was altered to perfectly mirror the other side. The overall effect of these revisions is one of the most beautiful examples of the 300SL Roadster in existence. In 2013 the completed 300SL was invited to the Quail Motorsports Gathering in Monterey, California, and the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, where it won the Mercedes Star of Excellence and was in the running for Best in Show. Significantly, because it was built in 1957, it is eligible for such historic and vintage events as the Mille Miglia. Considered by many as one of the best sport touring cars of the period, one minor drawback of the 300SL and many sports cars of this vintage is engine heat spilling into the cabin. The heat and sound-deadening material and the alterations to the cooling system make this first-year 300SL Roadster a joy to drive on a warm, sunny day. It is perfect for the collector who demands exclusivity and award-winning finish and presentation.

1963 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster (Lot S168)
This 1963 300SL roadster was acquired by its present owner, William E. Wuesthoff, a long-time Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mercedes-Benz dealer, in 1973. The first owner, Mr. Bernard Gruenke of Brookfield, Wisconsin, purchased the car from AFL Motors, Inc. of Milwaukee, taking delivery at the factory in Stuttgart in March of 1963 and driving it in Europe before shipping it home. The car was finished in Graphite Grey with Red leather interior, White Grey hard top and a Black soft top. Beginning in 1961, 300SLs were factory equipped with four-wheel disc brakes; this Roadster was also optioned with a Becker Grand Prix radio, boot-cover container, Whitewall tires and antifreeze, bringing the final price to $8,971.04 including taxes.

Because Mr. Gruenke often drove the car short distances in Wisconsin’s extremely cold winter without allowing the engine to reach proper operating temperature, the mechanical fuel injection would flush the cylinder walls with fuel, washing away oil from the cylinder walls and causing wear. Mercedes-Benz replaced the aluminum engine block and pistons under warranty, a fact confirmed in a sworn affidavit signed by Lothar Altman, a Mercedes-Benz Master Mechanic with Daum Motors of Milwaukee, which had taken over the AFL Motors franchise. The rest of the original engine components have remained with the car ever since, during which time it passed through two more owners before its acquisition by Mr. Wuesthoff in 1973.

In the late 1980s Mr. Wuesthoff took the car to 300SL specialist James Werner’s Werner Coach Werken in Cudahy, Wisconsin. Mr. Werner reconditioned the car with new Silver Metallic paint, new carpets and soft top and a complete detailing. To keep the car in top condition, in 2012 Mr. Wuesthoff delivered it to a noted 300SL technical specialist in Iowa to overhaul the engine, which was removed from the car, allowing the entire engine compartment to be cleaned and detailed.

Mr. Wuesthoff estimates he has driven the car between 4,000 and 5,000 miles, bringing total original mileage to 42,164 miles. Its two major outings have been in the Colorado Grand road rally and a showing at the Milwaukee Masterpiece, where it won its class in 2012. Documentation includes the new vehicle invoice, contract of sale and confirmation of order for European delivery.

1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing (Lot S152)
In 1955 Guatemalan Mercedes-Benz dealer, collector and veteran sports car racer Manfredo Lippmann imported three new 300SL “Gullwing” coupes to Guatemala for the Central American market. Of the 300 Gullwings built for export outside the United States, they were the only three sold to Guatemala. The first car delivered to Lippmann by Mercedes-Benz was this Silver Grey coupe, serial number 5500606. Its first owner was Mr. Guillermo Suhr, a wealthy young local entrepreneur. In 1957 it was sold to Alan Plihal who, after six years, sold it to Mr. Alfredo Peralta, whose father Enrique Peralta Azurdia was President of Guatemala from 1963 to 1966.

In 1973 the car was purchased by Mr. William Wilmeth, an American resident in Guatemala who sent the engine to a specialist Mercedes dealer in the United States for restoration. Mr. Wilmeth subsequently fell ill and the restoration was left unfinished. Wilmeth later returned to his home in the U.S. and placed the car in dry storage. It remained there for more than 20 years until December 2004, when it was purchased by Guatemalan automotive collector and restaurateur Mario Sueiras.

Mr. Sueiras then invested more than 2,000 hours of work in a nut-and-bolt restoration that was completed in November 2006. Still powered by the original matching-numbers engine and driveline, this extraordinarily rare Gullwing coupe is finished in Silver Grey Metallic Glasurit® paint and features a Blue leather interior with fitted matching luggage by renowned interior specialists GAHH. Significantly, the original belly pans remain intact on the car, which was equipped during the restoration with chromed reproduction Rudge knock-off wheels. It also retains the original owner’s manual, books and tools.

This fabulous 300SL coupe is registered with the Gullwing Group, the world’s largest 300SL car club with members in 22 countries. Driven fewer than 200 miles since the restoration, it has otherwise remained in Mr. Sueiras’ climate-controlled personal garage, the crown jewel in his impressive collection, which significantly includes several other Mercedes-Benz classics including a 1960 220 SE (Lot S140), a 1960 190SL Roadster (Lot S196), a 1938 170 Cabriolet (Lot S197) and a 1953 220 Cabriolet (Lot S139).

SALE OF RON PRATTE’S 1950 FUTURLINER AT 2015 BARRETT-JACKSON

SALE OF RON PRATTE’S 1950 FUTURLINER AT 2015 BARRETT-JACKSON

1950 GM Futurliner
  • Barrett-Jackson to auction Ron Pratte’s Futurliner for charity
  • Proceeds to benefit Armed Forces Foundation
  • Incredible piece of automotive history and American culture to go to new owner

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - July 11, 2014 – A 1950 General Motors Futurliner, one of the stars of the Ron Pratte collection, will be sold in January 2015 at Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car AuctionsTM,  with 100% of the proceeds benefitting the Armed Forces Foundation. One of 12 built and nine known to still exist, Pratte purchased the Futurliner at Barrett-Jackson.

“Barrett-Jackson was honored to help Ron Pratte add the Futurliner to his collection in 2006,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We appreciate his trust in Barrett-Jackson as he offers this incredible piece of Americana to its next owner. History was made as records fell the first time the Futurliner crossed our block, and we expect interest in it to reach a fevered pitch again.”

A veteran who served with the US Army’s 1st Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam during 1968, Pratte will donate all proceeds from the Futurliner to the Armed Forces Foundation. The organization is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to supporting and advocating for active-duty military personnel, National Guardsmen, Reservists, military families and veterans. The AFF covers travel, hotel rooms, home mortgages, car payments and daily expenses for families so they can stay at a loved one’s side during treatment and recovery from wounds suffered in war.

“Military veterans, especially wounded warriors, deserve our appreciation and our support,” said Pratte. “Their continued sacrifices give Americans the freedom to build happy, productive lives. With the help of the great team at Barrett-Jackson, I look forward to raising funds that will make AFF’s mission a success.”

The two organizations have partnered for the last eight years, AFF has received over four million dollars through Barrett-Jackson auto auctions since 2008.

“Barrett-Jackson’s charity moments on the auction block with the AFF have become some of the most memorable,” said Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson. “Ron Pratte’s generosity and patriotism is inspirational and I look forward to an outpouring of support for our fellow Americans in uniform.”

One of 12 built by GM, the Futurliner is a self-contained display and transport vehicle created by the GM design staff under Harley Earl’s direction. It was the centerpiece of the “Parade of Progress” touring exhibit that complemented the GM “Motoramas” from 1940 through 1956.

One of only three survivors restored in their original “Parade of Progress” configuration, this Futurliner underwent a comprehensive re-restoration after Ron Pratte purchased it as a fully restored example in 2006, making it clearly the finest example in existence. It is fully functional and toured Canada in corporate promotions before it became a part of the Ron Pratte collection. It is a symbol of the American auto industry at the height of its power and influence.

Pratte, a Chandler, Arizona, developer and philanthropist, built the majority of his collection at Barrett-Jackson auctions. His collection, featuring cars, trucks, motorcycles and other rarities including the Futurliner, will be on the docket at Barrett-Jackson’s 44th Annual Scottsdale Auction taking place January 10-18, 2015 with television coverage on Velocity and Discovery.

Mecum Auctions, the largest collector car auction company in the world, will conduct its first-ever auction in Harrisburg this July 24-27 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center with an estimated 1,000 collector cars expected to cross the auction block Thursday through Saturday and 200 motorcycles on Sunday.

Featured consignments include a well-documented 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle LS6 Convertible (Lot S145), a selection of more than a dozen cars from the personal collection of legendary collector car auctioneer and Pennsylvania native J. Omar Landis, as well as a four-speed 1970 Dodge Hemi Coronet R/T (Lot S107). Other vehicles that speak to the variety of the lineup include an award-winning 1916 Cadillac Town Car (Lot S93), a highly-optioned 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS Z28 (Lot S98) and a Candy Apple Red 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback (Lot S123). Several of these headliners are detailed below. The vintage and antique motorcycle segment to be held on Sunday, July 27 is highlighted by the Mike Quinn Collection featuring more than 100 Harley-Davidsons amassed over the last 35 years.

The Mecum Harrisburg Auction is open to buyers, sellers and spectators. Gates will open daily at 8 a.m., and the auction begins each day at 10 a.m. General admission tickets are $20 per day for adults, and children 12 and younger receive complimentary admission. Bidder registration is $100 and includes admission for two for all auction days. The auction will be broadcast on NBC Sports and Esquire networks and on Mecum.com. A complete list and daily updates of consigned cars, including photos and descriptions of each vehicle are available at Mecum.com. 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle LS6 Convertible (Lot S145)
This authentic, 44,000-mile SS 454 LS6 Chevelle Convertible is a documented two-owner car with original part numbers and date codes throughout. Never modified or raced, the car was in excellent condition even before undergoing a frame-off restoration to a level exceeding concours expectations. Its rarity and desirability is further boosted by being the only known SS 454 LS6 Convertible in this color combination, and also boasts an extensive option list. Options include power windows, tilt steering, bucket seats, console, tach and gauges, AM/FM radio, cowl induction, tinted glass, remote mirror and more. Accompanied by two build sheets, Protect-O-Plate, plus Baltimore assembly plant road test papers, this is certainly one of the most desirable LS6 Chevelles on the market today.

1970 Dodge Hemi Coronet R/T (Lot S107)
In addition to its unusual rarity, this 1970 Hemi Coronet R/T is further recommended by both voluminous documentation and its history as an original California car. It is fresh from a rotisserie restoration using all NOS or factory parts, an admirable accomplishment in today’s world of ever-diminishing supplies of such highly sought-after items. The matching-numbers Hemi engine was rebuilt by no less an authority than the late Dick Landy, who completed the work in 2000.

Code F8 Dark Green Metallic paint was chosen by the original owner, who also specified that the R/T-standard rear tail stripe be deleted. The resulting “sleeper” look is furthered by matching painted steel wheels and dog dish hub caps, the only giveaways being the R/T badging, rear body side imitation scoops and the very real Ramcharger twin hood scoops feeding the sealed air cleaner. Optional equipment includes a wood-grain rimmed steering wheel, R22 Solid State AM radio with 8-track tape player, full gauges including “Tic-Toc-Tach,” Light and Protection Groups and tinted glass. Documented with the factory build and broadcast sheets and accompanied by a Chrysler Registry report, this unique Hemi R/T has been with the same owner for 10 years and comes with a wealth of ownership history dating back to the original purchaser.

1916 Cadillac Town Car (Lot S93)
This timeless classic is a multiple-award-winning example of one of Cadillac’s early Town Cars. Featuring a body-off restoration by Rheinholds Restoration of Pennsylvania that was completed in 1988 and freshened in 2008, the car was the recipient of the AACA Junior and Senior Award in 1988, and it also took First in Class, Best in Show and People’s Choice at the Cadillac LaSalle Club Grand National in 1989. After the minor touchups by Rheinhold’s in 2008, the car returned to the Cadillac LaSalle Club Grand National and earned the Senior Award, and additionally went on to earn the Lion’s Award for Excellence at the 30th Anniversary Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance.

A Type-53 dressed in an aluminum body and wearing steel fenders, this Cadillac is equipped with an aluminum V-8 engine with cast headers, dual water pumps and dual exhaust. Interior appointments include a leather driver compartment and tilt wheel, with passenger compartment featuring Teal mohair with silk brocade trimming and a jump seat, interior lights, speaker phone to the driver, flower vase and roll-down partition window. Believed to be the only Healey-bodied car for this vintage, the car is believed to have only 20,945 original miles and was featured in the Hemmings Classic Car in April 2008.

1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback (Lot S123)
Underrated at 375 horsepower, Ford’s Boss 429s were powerhouses actually capable of outputting closer to 500 horsepower. As KK1611, this Boss 9 is one of just 859 produced in 1969, making it a rare gem even then as it certainly is today. Dressed in desirable Candy Apple Red, the car is equipped with a Holman-Moody race 429 CI 4V Boss engine mated to a four-speed close-ratio transmission. In addition to exterior features like the functional front air spoiler and the rear glass louvers, this Boss boasts the interior deluxe décor group with AM radio, console and more. Power steering, power front disc brakes, Traction-Lok differential and competition suspension complete the Boss 9 package. The sale of the car is accompanied by a build sheet, Deluxe Marti Report and shipping invoice.

The Mike Quinn Motorcycle Collection
Notorious in its own right, if not due to sheer volume alone, this extensive collection includes more than 100 Harley-Davidsons and a handful of other respected marques. Assembled over a period of more than 35 years of active collecting by one Michael Quinn, of Coos Bay, Ore., the grouping stems all the way back to his first purchase made in 1962.

Featured motorcycles from Quinn’s lineup include a low-mileage 1920 Harley-Davidson J-L20T unrestored with original paint; a freshly restored 1947 Harley-Davidson FL with sidecar; and a 1956 Harley-Davidson KH and 1965 Harley-Davidson FLH, both low-mileage examples, unrestored wearing their original paint.

1954 Ferrari 375 MM Spider To Be Offered At Auction By Mecum In Monterey

A remarkable lineup of headliners including world-class vintage racers, European sports cars and more is set to rock the Mecum auction block at this year’s Daytime Auction in Monterey, Calif., Aug. 14-16. Among the 750 classic and collector cars to be auctioned, marques from around the world will be represented with offerings from Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Duesenberg and beyond, all neatly lining the greens of Del Monte Golf Course at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa.

Headlining the impressive lineup is a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Spider (Lot R202) by Pinin Farina. According to various sources, Pinin Farina built just 16 open-coachwork 375 MM cars, and it was in early 1954 that this Pinin Farina-bodied Spider, chassis no. 0362AM, left the Ferrari factory destined to rule the race track.

With a true racing pedigree, including overall wins in no less than four major racing events and top finishes at several others, 0362AM was originally purchased by Southern California construction magnate Anthony Parravano. The car’s complete ownership history since is known and well-documented having been raced by some of the sport’s most memorable drivers at some of the most recognized tracks in America. Today, 0362AM is set to be offered for sale for the first time in 46 years after residing in a single collection owned by two retired California college professors. A spectacular restoration by the car’s dedicated owners, Charles Betz and Fred Peters, allows the car to shine in concours-ready condition. 0362AM will forever be marked in history as the most successful car in Scuderia Parravano’s brief but dramatic reign over West Coast sports car racing in the 1950s. She is now positioned to embark on the next chapter in that history. Now as then, 0362AM is both an aesthetic and mechanical masterpiece that will enchant in any setting, from the Cavallino Classic, Villa d’ Este and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Colorado Grand or California Mille, and on to the track at Monterey’s Motorsports Reunion and countless other vintage racing events.

Presented in August of 2013 at the Carmel Concours on the Avenue, 0362AM was awarded Best of Show, further demonstrating that whatever the venue, 0362AM and her fortunate new owner will find a place of honor ready and waiting.

Other auction stars include Peter Revson’s 1972 McLaren M20 Can-Am (Lot R200), a 1976 Porsche 934/935 IMSA El Salvador (Lot R206), an ACD-certified Category 1 original 1930 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Berline Convertible (Lot R228), a preservation-class 1961 Ferrari 250 Series II Cabriolet (Lot R226), more than one 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing (R124), Paul Reinhart’s 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Tanker Race Car (Lot R229) and a 1968 Shelby Turbine Indy Car (Lot R201), to name a few.

Auction gates will open daily at 8 a.m. and general admission will be available at the gate for $20 per person, per day; children 12 and younger will receive complimentary admission. Barrett-Jackson Cup Returns To The 2nd Annual Hot August Nights Auction With More $100,000 In Prizes

Barrett-Jackson Cup Returns To The 2nd Annual Hot August Nights Auction With More $100,000 In Prizes

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., June 25, 2014 – Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™, is upping the ante when it comes to best in show competitions. Held in downtown Reno, the Barrett-Jackson Cup is back for the 2nd Annual Hot August Nights Auction, July 31-Aug. 2, with a prize purse north of $100,000 and growing.

With the help of generous sponsors like General Motors, Ford, Sherwin Williams, Craftsman, Waterloo, Adam’s Polish and more, the purse has more than doubled since the inaugural event last year. The prize package and trophy top all other similar awards in the industry, with the added bonus of national television coverage. The Ultimate Best in Show trophy is awarded along with $30,000 cash and other huge prizes on the auction block and seen around the country on the National Geographic Channel.*

Barrett-Jackson’s historic partnership with the world’s premiere classic car and nostalgia festival, Hot August Nights, began in 2013 and proved to be a match made in car heaven. Since then, Autoweek named Hot August Nights a top-three destination in the world for automotive enthusiasts. Huge hype around the auction’s sophomore campaign is growing just as fast as the prize purse.

Renowned Judges: Judges Bobby Alloway, Pete Chapouris and Bob Millard will pick a total of 25 cars from the downtown Reno “Show and Shine” car shows. These 25 cars will go to the downtown ballroom where the five top finalists will be advanced to the final ceremony. All five finalist cars will then come to the Barrett-Jackson Auction Arena where the Ultimate Best in Show winner will be awarded the Barrett-Jackson Cup in front of a television broadcast audience of more than 100,000,000 homes during Barrett-Jackson Reno Auction coverage. We cannot think of another automotive design competition that comes close to the Barrett-Jackson Cup’s reach and prizes.

The 2013 winner was a custom 1969 Ford Torino owned by George Poteet of Collierville, Tenn. and built by Troy and Jack Trepanier of Rad Rides by Troy. It was a highlight moment when Jack Trepanier, a keystone in the collector car community, accepted the award on the auction block.  Sadly, Jack passed away in March of this year. Barrett-Jackson is dedicating the 2014 Barrett-Jackson Cup in his honor.

Entrants must be a registered participant of Hot August Nights and the Show-n-Shines. Register your vehicle or get more information by visiting HotAugustNights.net or calling the Hot August Nights Office at (775) 356-1956.
