Muscle Cars Dominate The Midwest At Mecum Auction In Chicagoland

Muscle cars and Ford GTs dominated at Mecum Auctions’ 2014 Chicago collector car auction held this past weekend at the Schaumburg Convention Center. Host to 936 vehicles and throngs of buyers, sellers and more than 15,000 spectators, the lineup brought an excellent variety, but it was the impressive selection of muscle that stole the spotlight and virtually every spot in top sales. With 579 of the total vehicles offered hammering sold, a 62 percent sell-through rate was achieved and total sales reached $15,267,644.

Auction sales were topped by the three headlining vehicles, all Ford GTs. A 2006 Heritage Edition with just 182 miles took top sales honors with an impressive sale price of $475,000. One of just 343 produced, the Heritage Edition has easily taken its rightful place as the most desirable of the already ultra-collectible Ford GT line. Following close behind in top sales were two more Ford GTs including a 2006 (Lot S147.1) with just 300 miles that hammered at $335,000 and a 2005 (Lot S162) with just 382 miles that hammered at $300,000. The ’06 is serial number 12 of just 2,011 built and features Mark II Black paint and Silver Le Mans striping with an Ebony leather interior. The ’05 is a rare Le Mans stripe-delete version finished in Mark IV Red with a Black interior and was offered with transport stickers still intact. Fourth in top sales was a Black Jade 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback (Lot S132) formerly from the collection of past Major League Baseball player John Smiley that brought a top bid of $200,000.

The complete top 10 sales at Mecum’s Chicago auction includes (all individual sales reflect hammer prices):

1. 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition (Lot S125.1) at $475,000
2. 2006 Ford GT (Lot S147.1) at $335,000

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Sept. 28, 2014 Barrett-Jackson, “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions TM once again rocked Las Vegas with another record-setting auction at the Mandalay Bay Event Center from Sept. 25-26, 2014. During the three-day event, Barrett-Jackson hosted the largest number of consigned vehicles in the auction’s Las Vegas history with more than 700 vehicles and more than 339 collectible automobilia pieces crossing the block for more than $33,300,000 in sales (unaudited).

The record setting docket attracted huge crowds, including celebrities such as Wayne Newton, Penn Jillette (Penn & Teller), Corey Harrison and Austin “ChumLee” Russel of Pawn Stars, Richard Petty and Linda Vaughn. From muscle cars and historic hot rods to the latest exotic collectible vehicles, the lineup created a spirited, electric atmosphere.
