12 DAYS UNTIL SCOTTSDALE: 1954 KAISER-DARRIN

This 1954 Kaiser-Darrin is one of more than 140 vehicles from the Ron Pratte Collection crossing the block at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January.

This beautifully proportioned two-seater was called the Kaiser-Darrin because it came from wealthy industrialist Henry J. Kaiser’s fairly large Kaiser-Frazer Auto Company and was designed by legendary custom coach builder, Howard A. “Dutch” Darrin.

The first true American sports car, the Kaiser-Darrin prototype was introduced even before that of the Corvette and Thunderbird. Always a forward-thinker, Darrin recognized the benefits of fiberglass construction as well as incorporating his patented, sliding “pocket” doors and 3-position convertible top.

Bodies were supplied by Glasspar Boat Company, a pioneer in the use of fiberglass for specialized cars. This is body #208 of only 435 Kaiser-Darrins ever built during its one year of production and is a total, professional rotisserie restoration of an untouched and original car. Every nut, bolt and component was removed and totally rebuilt and restored to like-new condition.

This piece of history features an 80hp, 161cid L-head 6 cylinder Kaiser engine and 3-speed manual overdrive transmission with pocket doors and matching interior and top.

This 1954 Kaiser-Darrin Convertible (Lot #2017) will cross the auction block in Scottsdale on Tuesday, Jan. 13.

Ron Pratte’s prestigious collection of automobilia will kick off the 44th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction beginning Saturday, Jan. 10 at 9 a.m. and running through Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. Pratte’s vehicles first cross the block at 4 p.m. on Tuesday with lot numbers 2000 through 2109 and will continue with lot numbers 2500 through 2530 on Saturday, Jan. 17.

Largest Mecum MidAmerica Motorcycle Auction In 24-Year History, Jan. 8-10

Mecum Auctions will present MidAmerica’s 24th annual Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction Jan. 8-10, 2015 at South Point Casino and Exhibit Hall in Las Vegas. As the most anticipated antique motorcycle auction of the year, the three-day event is open to all and draws participants from all 50 states and around the world. This year will see a record 750 antique and collector motorcycles cross the auction block spanning a full century of production from 1903 to 2003.

The auction will feature no less than 10 private collections from some of the hobby’s well-known enthusiasts. Among them is an assemblage of 40 motorcycles from The Shane Van Pelt Collection, most of which will be offered at no reserve, as well as a great selection from the personal collection of Don Andress, owner and operator of the Las Vegas Harley-Davidson dealership. A lineup of 44 excellent examples from the David Silver Spares Collection will be offered all at no reserve, and an additional 21 motorcycles at no reserve from The Buddy Stubbs Collection will also cross the auction block.

Other main-attraction consignments include a 1966 Harley-Davidson CRTT (Lot S77) documented as having been ridden by National Champion Racer Mert Lawwill. The bike is the first CR Sprint Harley-Davidson received from Italy in 1966 and one of only six Harley-Davidson factory team CRTT bikes built. Another auction headliner, from The Gary Davis Collection, is the actual stunt bike used in the 1990 Marvel Comics ‘Captain America’ movie (Lot S124), ridden by Gary Davis himself.

For the antique motorcycle collectors, there will be a 1911 Harley-Davidson Model 7A (Lot S115) in original, unrestored condition. This small sampling only scratches the surface of the extensive selection of motorcycles that will be offered for sale throughout the three-day event.

“The consignments to be offered this year are, in every sense of the word, treasures to the antique motorcycle world,” comments Ron Christenson, president of Mecum’s MidAmerica Motorcycle division. “They will truly excite even the most seasoned motorcycle collector as they cross the auction block. And with our largest offering ever, there is undoubtedly something that will please virtually any motorcycle enthusiast.”

A live stream of the entire auction will be presented at Mecum.com with portions also broadcast on NBC Sports Network. The auction is open to buyers, sellers and spectators with general admission tickets available at the gate for $20 per person, per day or $50 for a three-day pass; children ages 12 and younger receive complimentary admission. Bidder registration is $100 and includes admission for two to all auction days. Doors open daily at 8 a.m. with the auction beginning on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 4 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, Jan. 9 and 10, at 10 a.m.

An exclusive preview party sponsored by Las Vegas Harley-Davidson will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7 from noon to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be served from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, and shuttles from South Point to LVHD will be provided during both preview periods. All registered bidders are invited to attend the preview sessions at no additional cost.

13 DAYS UNTIL SCOTTSDALE: BLASTOLENE

The Blastolene B-702 Custom Roadster is one of more than 140 vehicles from the Ron Pratte Collection crossing the block at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January.

The one-of-a-kind Blastolene B-702 Custom Roadster (Lot #2507) was designed and constructed in 2007 by the Blastolene team of Michael Leeds and Randy Grubb. Inspired by the great French cars of the 1930s, the Midnight Blue B-702 evokes the dramatic shapes of the “French Curve.” The aerodynamic coachwork of Figoni et Falaschi, creators of the Talbot-Lago Teardrop Coupe, among others, was a particular influence.

With its swooping fenders and submarine-length hood, the Blastolene exudes a powerful presence at 19.5 feet long and 94 inches wide. The hand-formed aluminum body sits on a custom frame, and the entire chassis is nickel-plated or powder coated to a show quality.

The engine is a rarity in itself. The Blastolene is powered by a 702cid GM gasoline V12, an engine produced from 1960-65 for use in GMC medium-duty trucks. Named the “Twin-Six” by GMC, the V12 has a cast iron block topped by four separate cylinder heads and two intake manifolds. With a factory rating of 650 ft/lbs of torque at 850 rpm, the V12 has no problem moving the Blastolene down the road. The V12 is backed by an Allison 4-speed. Out back is a 9-inch Ford Currie rear end.

The Blastolene may be larger than life, but it’s in the details you’ll find the unique custom treasures, such as the cut and beveled glass grille and the hand-blown glass tail lamps. Inside, the driver sits on maroon leather-covered seats and tracks progress via a speedometer cluster from a Lincoln Zephyr.

This 2007 Blastolene B-702 Custom Roadster (Lot #2507) will cross the auction block in Scottsdale on Saturday, Jan. 17.

14 DAYS UNTIL SCOTTSDALE: 1969 MUSCLE CARS

14 DAYS UNTIL SCOTTSDALE: 1969 MUSCLE CARS

This 1969 Ford Mustang BOSS 302 is one of more than 140 vehicles from the Ron Pratte Collection crossing the block at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January.

A true 1969 Ford Mustang BOSS 302 (Lot #2049), this beautiful car has matching date codes, casting numbers and engine numbers. With fewer than 2,000 BOSS 302s produced and built in 1969, and with even fewer having the original engine, transmission and rear end, this Mustang is incredibly rare. As reported on the included original Build Sheet and Elite Marti Report, this BOSS was ordered for a retired Ford Employee exactly as is.

The 1969 Mustang BOSS 302 was built for the Trans Am racing circuit back in 1969 and it competed against the Chevy Camaro Z/28. Both cars had the exact same engine displacement and the exact same horsepower, but the BOSS 302 was not mass-produced like the Z/28. This is an extremely rare example of a real BOSS 302 that is more sought after and desirable while becoming harder to find.

This 1969 Ford Mustang BOSS 302 Fastback (Lot #2049) will cross the auction block in Scottsdale on Tuesday, Jan.

1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28

From 1966 through 1972, the original Trans Am series showcased not only some of the best professional road racing ever, but it also spurred the creation of fabulous collector cars like the Ford BOSS Mustang, Plymouth AAR Barracuda, and most memorably, the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.

Both the Trans Am series and the Z/28 took off in 1969 and Chevrolet dealers sold a remarkable 20,302 Z/28s that year. These Z/28s aren’t street legal racers, but they are about the nearest thing to it.

This ’69 Chevrolet Camarao Z/28 (Lot #2035) has been thoroughly restored by Kent Waters Originals. It comes with voluminous documentation certified by Camaro expert Jerry MacNeish, plus photos of the car in 1969 and step-by-step photos of the restoration process. It is finished in authentic and vibrant Rally Green with white racing stripes and a black bucket seat interior. It has a rare NOS Cross-Ram intake manifold, 4.10:1 differential, and many factory options, including Rally Sport trim, rosewood dash inserts, center console with auxiliary gauges and an Endura front bumper.

This ’69 Chevrolet Camarao Z/28 (Lot #2035) will cross the auction block in Scottsdale on Tuesday, Jan. 13.

15 DAYS UNTIL SCOTTSDALE: BEVERLY HILLBILLIES

The Beverly Hillbillies Custom Truck is one of more than 140 vehicles from the Ron Pratte Collection crossing the block at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January.

Here is a rare opportunity to own a piece of the Beverly Hillbillies history. This vehicle was built, signed and purchased from none other than George Barris of Barris Kustom Industries. Barris Kustom Industries has been in business since 1944 and are well-known for their movie vehicles such as the “General Lee,” the “Munster Mobile” and the “Batmobile.”

Documented by Mr. Barris as one of five vehicles built, it was filmed in the TV series as well as the Beverly Hillbillies movie. It is world famous for its unprecedented 12-year run on the original TV series with such stars as Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan, Max Baer Jr., Donna Douglas and Nancy Kulp.

This operable piece of Hollywood history was constructed using a 1922 Oldsmobile base and a vintage truck chassis. This amazing, impressive Hillbilly Truck known as the “Jalopy” has been used at the Autorama, World of Wheels and Rod and Custom Car Shows.

The Beverly Hillbillies Custom Truck (Lot #2005) will cross the auction block in Scottsdale on Tuesday, Jan.

16 DAYS UNTIL SCOTTSDALE: FUTURLINER

This 1950 General Motors Futurliner is one of more than 140 vehicles from the Ron Pratte Collection crossing the block at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January.

One of only 12 built by GM, the Futurliner is a self-contained display and transport vehicle created by the GM design staff under Harley Earl’s direction. It was the centerpiece of the “Parade of Progress” touring exhibit that complemented the GM “Motoramas” from 1940 through 1956.

One of only three survivors restored in their original “Parade of Progress” configuration, this Futurliner underwent a comprehensive re-restoration after Ron Pratte purchased it as a fully restored example in 2006, making it clearly the finest example in existence. It is fully functional and toured Canada in corporate promotions before it became a part of the Ron Pratte collection. It is a symbol of the American auto industry at the height of its power and influence.

This 1950 General Motors Futurliner (Lot #2501) will cross the auction block as a charity auction benefitting the Armed Forces Foundation in Scottsdale on Saturday, Jan. 17.

17 DAYS UNTIL SCOTTSDALE: WHATTHEHAYE & CHEZOOM

The ’36 Delahaye “Whatthehaye” Street Rod (LEFT) and the ’57 Chevrolet Bel Air “Chezoom” Custom (RIGHT) are two of more than 140 vehicles from the Ron Pratte Collection crossing the block at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January.

1936 Delahaye “Whatthehaye” Street Rod

The ’36 Delahaye “Whatthehaye” Street Rod (Lot #2515) is certainly one of the most striking automobiles on earth. It is a one-of-a-kind vehicle from the mind and imagination of the late Boyd Coddington and it represents a tip of the hat to the mind and imagination of Emile Delahaye.

In 1894, Delahaye formed his own car company. Judging by the machines he was responsible for creating, or having created, he must have known the future personally. His cars may well have been the very first to look like they were moving fast even when parked at the curb.

Coddington’s effort is the result of 79 years’ worth of hindsight used to improve upon an original design that was already fantastic. In doing so, he added almost eight decades of technology that had previously been unimagined.

Naturally, a completely new chassis supports this car and provides a modern suspension for maximum comfort and performance. The Marcel Delay metal work is breathtaking and the motivation is overwhelming. A Viper V10 engine and its corresponding 6-speed manual transmission look and feel like it was Emile himself who wanted them there.

The 1936 Delahaye “Whatthehaye” Street Rod (Lot #2515) will cross the auction block in Scottsdale on Saturday, Jan. 17.

1957 Chevrolet Bel Air “Chezoom” Custom

Built by Body Coddington, “Chezoom” (Lot #2514) is the most recognized and famous ’57 Chevy worldwide and is possibly one of his most famous creations.

The car was actually penned by noted car artist Thom Taylor as an exercise of design possibilities. Fortunately for all of us, speed equipment tycoon Joe Hrudka was visiting Coddington’s shop when Taylor unveiled his sketch. Hrudka said he wanted it and thus car-customizing history began its giant leap forward.

A special chassis was developed just for this car since the original one would have placed the occupants too high inside to cope with the ultra-low roof line that Taylor’s sketches called for. The finished product is said to have retained only 10 percent of its original sheet metal.

A C4 Corvette suspension system and brakes were used at all four corners on this new chassis. An LTI small block with a proper 700-R4 overdrive transmission moves this cruiser along with dead-on dependability.

In 2004, this masterpiece was upgraded again in numerous ways including a comprehensive redesign of its interior. Air conditioning, a new sound system and an XM satellite connection gives it a real touch of space age influence. This ’57 has a custom steering wheel machined to match the four-of-a-kind Boyd wheels at each corner.

The 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air “Chezoom” Custom (Lot #2514) will cross the auction block in Scottsdale on Saturday, Jan. 17.

18 DAYS UNTIL SCOTTSDALE: 1941 CADILLAC SERIES 62

This 1941 Cadillac Series 62 is one of more than 140 vehicles from the Ron Pratte Collection crossing the block at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January.

This rare pre-war ’41 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible (Lot #2022) was one of the last cars built by Cadillac before they converted the factory to the war-time production of tanks. Cadillac automobile production would not resume again until 1946.

This model Cadillac benefitted from the refined and sophisticated styling of the legendary Harley Earl as well as the imaginative design of a young William “Bill” Mitchell. During the introduction of this model, Harley Earl said it best, “We want the customer to be able to walk around the car and be entertained the entire trip.” The 1941 model year introduced an imposing new front-end design with flowing curves and a distinctive egg crate grille with an astonishing amount of gleaming chrome. The style and grace of Cadillac is combined with advanced engineering and wonderfully smooth ride to make this a safe and prestigious automobile.

This beautiful Tuxedo Black convertible was restored emphasizing a refit of all body parts with a very precise fit and finish. The exterior paint is flawless. The red-trimmed wheels with rear fender skirts and the correct red Cadillac emblems make a striking contrast. The interior is red and luxurious with just the right amount of patina. The dash is a carefully painted woodgrain that was an original and highly desired finish. The Haartz cloth top is tan and the mechanism has the proper chrome braces and window surrounds.

The legendary Flathead V8 engine is properly detailed and runs with smooth and quiet power so typical of a Cadillac. A correct 346cid L-head V8 engine puts out 150bhp and is coupled to the optional Hydramatic transmission. Topped with the original Stromberg carburetor and oil-bath air filter, the engine compartment is meticulous. The highly domed “coffin” hood is topped by the bold “Goddess of Speed” ornament that also functions as the hood release mechanism and is typical of the Cadillac commitment to style and function.

The 1941 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible (Lot #2022) will cross the auction block in Scottsdale on Tuesday, Jan.
