Barrett-Jackson Rocked Its 8th Annual Palm Beach Auction With Amazing Cars, Strong Sales And Impressive Crowds

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – April 09, 2010 – The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company reported more than $20 million in total sales and produced one of its most dynamic auctions during the 8th Annual Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Collector Car Auction April 1-3, 2010. The all No Reserve auction had bidders vying for more than 400 cars on an exciting docket that included the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Special Edition that sold for $297,000, the Shadrach “Platt & Payne Signature Edition” Mustang that fetched $190,000 with all proceeds benefitting the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, and the only 1965 Boyd Coddington roadster ever built that went to the winning bidder for $184,800. Barrett-Jackson hosted more than 55,000 attendees during the three-day auction at the Americraft Expo Center at the South Florida Fairgrounds. The 2010 Palm Beach event was dedicated to the memory of Nellie Jackson, the auction company’s matriarch who passed away in February at age 90.

“This year’s Palm Beach auction was another testament to the vibrancy of the collector car market,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We had an outstanding event that was attended by many of our best customers along with a strong showing of new bidders and consignors. The average hammer price per car was up over last year, and we’re thrilled to have helped raise $60,000 for the Darrell Gwynn Foundation during our opening night party, as well as over $560,000 for other deserving charities during our auction.”

In addition to the “Platt & Payne” Mustang, this year’s docket included a host of charity cars including the Budweiser Ford Thunderbird #11, which benefited the Stocks for Tots Foundation and the 2007 Ford Shelby GT Coupe Show car, which featured a custom Las Vegas paint scheme and benefited the Carroll Shelby Foundation. There were many other special cars offered during the auction, including the limited edition, high-performance Barrett-Jackson and ROUSH version of the Ford Mustang. The concept vehicle, which is painted with a base of metallic “Back in Black” with “Red Hot Chili Pepper” stripes on the front using the Planet Color Barrett-Jackson Collector Color Series paints, rolled across the block on Saturday, April 3, and fetched $110,000. The action in the main auction arena was so intense on Saturday evening that SPEED extended its scheduled live coverage for an hour, bringing the total to 23 ½ hours of televised coverage for the 2010 Palm Beach event.

“This year we sold 463 cars, with many going home to new bidders,” added Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Barrett-Jackson provides a forum where experienced collectors come to bid on the high dollar collectibles while first time buyers have an opportunity to find great cars that can seed a new collection. We want every car enthusiast to know that the Barrett-Jackson experience is within their reach.”

The auction week started off when Commissioner Burt Aaronson declared March 27-April 3, 2010, “Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction Week” in Palm Beach County. In addition to the auction, the full week of activities included a Road Rally, which featured approximately 75 vehicles, the 3rd annual Cruise-In at Wayne Akers Ford that showcased over 150 collector and custom cars, a Barrett-Jackson exhibit at City Place, and a pre-auction charity reception benefitting the Darrell Gwynn Foundation hosted by John and Jeanette Staluppi at their Cars of Dreams museum.

“The high level of interest by enthusiasts in Florida and along the East Coast is the reason our Palm Beach auction continues to grow,” said Jackson. “We’re especially excited about Commissioner Aaronson’s Barrett-Jackson auction week declaration. With the success of our first Palm Beach road rally and our 3rd annual cruise-in at Wayne Akers, we’re creating a destination event in Palm Beach County that has something for everyone.”

Standing room only crowds filled the auction arena throughout the three-day sale where attendees witnessed a number of head-to-head bidding wars. The top ten cars sold in Palm Beach were:

  • 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 – $297,000.00 (Lot #678)
