Barrett-Jackson Celebrates Four Decades Of Charitable Work At 40th Annual Scottsdale Auction
- 18 national and local foundations to benefit from the sale of 19 charity vehicles and a GM engine
- NASCAR Championship Team Owner Rick Hendrick to sell two vehicles for charity

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Jan. 18, 2011 – The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company will help 18 local and national charities raise money for their causes during the 40th Annual Scottsdale Auction, on Jan. 17-23, at WestWorld of Scottsdale. Nineteen charity vehicles and a high performance GM engine will cross the block at No Reserve during the automotive lifestyle week.
“Barrett-Jackson was founded on a philosophy of philanthropy when Tom Barrett and my father, Russ Jackson, hosted their first car show to raise money for the Scottsdale library and community arts center in 1967,” stated Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “More than 40 years later, our commitment to the community is stronger than ever. We understand the importance of giving back, no matter how small or large the act. That’s why we’re waiving all fees for charity vehicles that cross the block as we have done in the past.”
“Each of these organizations needs our support,” added Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “We’ve made it our goal to raise as much money for both local and national foundations as possible and so far, we’ve generated more than $33 million. We know bidders will be just as excited about taking home one of these cars as we are about selling them. Let’s start the New Year off right and see how much money we can raise for these deserving charities.”
For the Love of Children
Children’s charities will be at the epicenter of the auction when four foundations sell vehicles to raise money for their causes. Starting off the group will be a 2011 Ford Mustang custom coupe (Lot 1265.2) to benefit Childhelp and the Victory Junction Gang Camp. Childhelp provides services to abused and neglected children and Victory Junction provides life-changing camping experiences for special needs and chronically ill children.
Features on the yellow and blue pony car include a custom body kit from Street Scene Equipment and Forgeline 20” wheels shod with Nitto extreme performance NT555 tires. Outfitted with a Katzkin custom charcoal leather interior and Polk Audio amps, the stylish Mustang also features speakers and subs, a Revolution airbag steering wheel from Grand and much more.
The Child Safety Network (CSN) was established to reduce the likelihood of children becoming victims of abuse, abduction, exploitation and injury. It accomplishes this mission by developing and implementing educational safety programs on a global basis. In partnership with the Basketball Hall of Fame, CSN will auction a 2007 Chevrolet C6 Corvette coupe (Lot #1565) that was signed by 50 of the NBA’s greatest legends, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, as well as team members from the 1960 and 1992 U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Teams. The car features a V8 Engine with 5-speed automatic transmission and custom patriotic graphics.
The 2003 Victory Vegas custom motorcycle (Lot #697.1) has just 1,005 miles since it was built and is from NASCAR legend Rusty Wallace’s private collection. Motorsports Charities Inc., dba The NASCAR Foundation will benefit from the sale of the Victory Vegas cruiser. The NASCAR Foundation embodies the compassion of the NASCAR family and its commitment to serving communities. It seeks to raise funds and increase volunteerism to support nonprofit charitable causes throughout the nation with an emphasis placed on initiatives that affect the ability of children to live, learn and play.
Another vehicle that will be auctioned on behalf of a children’s charity is Lot #44, a gorgeous 1971 Chevy C-20 custom restored pickup in showroom condition. Under the hood of this stylish Chevy thumps a 396/400 horsepower big block bolted to a rebuilt transmission sporting a high performance shift kit. The ‘71 is a real gem with new Hugger Orange paint, a new interior, spray lined bed and new stereo.
All proceeds from the sale of this marvelous classic Chevy will benefit Casa Esperanza para Ninos, which means “House of Hope for Children”. This non-profit institution’s purpose is to provide an atmosphere that will protect, feed, nurture, educate and love children who would not otherwise have a stable environment while growing up.
Double the Donation
Through the years, Barrett-Jackson has supported numerous charitable organizations, and its relationship with The Darrell Gwynn Foundation is among the strongest. Started by NHRA champion Darrell Gwynn, the Foundation’s mission is to provide awareness, prevention, and support to help find a cure for spinal cord injuries and paralysis. Two vehicles are up for auction to benefit this legendary racer’s cause, including a 1974 Mercury Montego Street Version Race Car (Lot #962) and the 20th anniversary 1990 Coors Extra Gold Top Fuel dragster replica (Lot #962.1).
The ‘74 Mercury was custom-built by Wood Brothers Mercury with support from Gateway Classic Mustang. The car is a replica of the racer that NASCAR Hall of Fame-elect David Pearson drove to defeat Richard Petty in the 1976 Daytona 500 race. It features a Ford Racing 521cid V8 engine and a red paint job that screams nostalgia.
Lot #962.1 is no stranger to the Barrett-Jackson block; it was originally sold in Scottsdale 2010, re-donated to the Palm Beach auction a couple of months later, resold in June 2010 at the inaugural Orange County auction and again at the 2010 Las Vegas auction. The yellow and gold racer replicates the dragster driven by Gwynn. The objective is to continually auction the dragster until the charity hits their goal of $1 million for this car. Up to and including the Las Vegas 2010 sale, $810,000 has been raised at Barrett-Jackson events.
Ten time SPRINT Cup Series NASCAR Championship team owner Rick Hendrick will sell two vehicles to benefit charity. He will auction a 1996 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am IROC racer (Lot #1268.2) and a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS Callaway/Hendrick Edition (Lot #1272.3) to raise money for the Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, N.C., through the Carolinas HealthCare Foundation. The Levine Children’s Hospital is a world-class facility dedicated to the needs of children and families. A pediatric intensive care center inside the hospital is named in honor of Hendrick’s late son, Ricky.
The Pontiac IROC race car No.6 driven in 2005 by Mark Martin, a 40-time Sprint Cup race winner, will be the first of the two Hendrick cars to roll across the auction block. It has a completely rebuilt engine and race chassis. The engine hasn’t been started since rebuild and there have been no fluids in it yet. It is sold on a bill of sale and includes race car dollies, race car wheel stands, race car cover, race car manual and race car book.
“This specific car was a major factor in Martin becoming a five-time IROC champion,” stated Davis. “Martin started last and won a photo finish in the Richmond 2005 race against Kurt Busch. And the car was also driven by Wayne Taylor, Ted Musgrave, Sam Hornish, Jr. and Frank Kimmel.”
The 2010 Callaway/Hendrick Camaro is the 25th built in a series to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Hendrick Motorsports; one car was built for every year. The Camaro is still on the original MSO. Standard equipment includes a Callaway TVS2300 Supercharger system, carbon fiber injector covers and high flow intake system that are visible through the power window hood. The car breathes out through a low restriction exhaust system while the 582 horsepower and 546 ft./lb. of torque are controlled through a short throw shifter.
The Ralph Braun Foundation was created to provide wheelchair accessible transportation to those who cannot afford customized vehicles. Two Corvettes will be sold as a pair to benefit the Foundation. A 1981 Chevrolet Corvette coupe (Lot #441) was the first off the assembly line in Bowling Green, Ky. Its partner, a 1981 Corvette coupe (Lot #441.1), was the last built at the legendary St. Louis factory before the doors closed on July 31, 1981. The twins feature a beige exterior over a camel interior with a V8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission.
America’s Sports Car
Located next to the General Motors Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Ky., the National Corvette Museum is home to “All Things Corvette” and is dedicated to the mission of celebration, education and preservation for America’s sports car. The museum opened its doors in 1994 and continues to operate seven days a week. To honor the 50th anniversary of Corvette’s first appearance and win at the 24 Hours of LeMans and raise money for the museum, Barrett-Jackson will auction a 2011 Chevrolet Corvette LeMans Racing Z06 coupe (Lot #1032). The Arctic White Corvette features VIN 001 for the 2011 year. The Corvette has a powerful V8, LS7 427cid engine with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Corvette comes signed by Corvette Hall of Fame drivers, Dick Thompson and Dick Guldstrand and is the first Z06 to feature the Z07 performance package. Not only will the new owner take home a piece of Corvette history, they also will receive a VIP factory and National Corvette Museum tour, along with a one-year membership to the museum.
The Call of Duty
Members of the U.S. armed forces, who sacrifice daily for the American people, will be honored through another special vehicle that will be sold at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale for a deserving charity.
Lot #735.1, a 2009 Dodge Charger race car, will be sold at No Reserve to benefit the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA). Founded in 1946, PVA works to maximize the quality of life for its members – veterans of the armed forces who have experienced spinal cord injury or dysfunction.
The No.9 Budweiser Dodge Charger was driven by Kasey Kahne at road courses in the Sprint Cup races at Sonoma and Watkins Glen. With a 358cid, SR1 4-speed manual transmission, this vehicle is 100 percent race ready. It also features a 17 gallon fuel cell and NASCAR 9” rear gear.
“This bad boy generates up to 830 horsepower,” explained Gary Bennett, vice president of consignment at Barrett-Jackson. “We had the privilege of auctioning this car at our 2010 Las Vegas auction. It will grace the stage in Scottsdale to again raise money for this honorable charity.”
Supporting the Sick
Barrett-Jackson will assist the David Foster Foundation with a surprise vehicle crossing the block. The only information being revealed by both Barrett-Jackson and GM is that Lot #1284 is a 2011 Chevrolet. The unveiling will take place Thursday, Jan. 20, during a special presentation by GM. All proceeds from the sale of this mystery car will benefit the David Foster Foundation. The Foundation was started in 1986 to provide financial support to Canadian families with children in need of life-saving organ transplants. In addition to helping families with their non-medical expenses, the Foundation strives to increase organ donor registration through public awareness campaigns in Canada and the United States.
The most powerful crate engine ever offered by General Motors will be sold to the highest bidder during the auction. A 2011 GM Performance Parts LSX454R crate engine (Lot #1032.1) that generates up to 750 horsepower, is the first LSX454R crate engine available to the public and was built from the bomb-proof LSX block. The new engine features fully forged bottom end components for the most severe of racing conditions. The engine is designed for nine-second bracket cars and series competition. Not only will the new owner take home a high-performance engine, but he will also receive a letter of authenticity signed by the GM Performance Parts staff. A custom engine display stand and a chance to watch the engine get assembled on the GM Performance parts assembly line in the Detroit area will all accompany the vehicle to the auction block.
The sale of the crate engine benefits the American Heart Association (AHA). The AHA was founded in 1924 to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease or stroke. The organization is famous for its “Go Red for Women” campaign, which raises awareness about heart disease among women, and its “Power to End Stroke,” which is an education and awareness campaign that embraces and celebrates the culture, energy, creativity and lifestyles of Americans.
The St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will receive money from the sale of a 2008 Ford Mustang FR500S race car (Lot #1018). The hospital was founded in 1962 in Memphis, Tenn., by the late entertainer Danny Thomas. What started out as a promise by Danny to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes, has turned into one of the best children’s research hospitals in the world.
The Mustang has been inspected by the World Challenge Series to ensure it complies with all competition standards. SPX will provide a sponsorship package, the SPX Racing Experience, to the winning bidder to help fund the bidder’s new racing program. The Ford Racing High Performance Driving School located at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, will put the new owner or their appointed driver through a four-day race-training program; the result will be a racing license accepted by the SCCA. Stand 21 will also provide the race wear, as well as pit equipment and tools.
A 2012 Ford Mustang BOSS 302 Laguna Seca coupe (Lot #1296), designed by the Ford Motor Company specifically for the 40th Anniversary Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale event, will also be sold for charity. Out of production since the early 1970s, the BOSS Mustang has returned. The Laguna Seca package was introduced to commemorate the BOSS 302’s victory at the 1970 Trans-Am series opener. The BOSS 302 Laguna Seca will make its Barrett-Jackson debut in the form of a one-of-one vehicle with unique Grabber Blue paint and black accents, as well as a 5.0 liter V8 engine and 6-speed transmission.
All proceeds from the sale of the one-off factory BOSS will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). JDRF was founded in 1970 and is the largest charitable funder and advocate for Type 1 Diabetes research. JDRF hopes to one day find a cure for diabetes and its complications through research.
The new owner of the 2010 Hurst Ford Racing Mustang Challenger Series Pace Car convertible (Lot #1551) will write their check to the Austin Hatcher Foundation. This foundation was formed in 2006 to reduce suffering due to childhood and adolescent cancer and provide cancer survivors with services needed to live meaningful and productive lives.
Larry H. Miller dealerships in Provo, Utah, donated the Mustang while Hurst, Ford Racing, BFGoodrich Tires and Whelen Engineering donated their parts and time to build this amazing muscle car. The only one of its kind, the 550 horsepower pace car goes beyond its duty of corralling the field during the Ford Racing Mustang Challenger Series races. This car was a sponsor vehicle for the 2010 Hot Rod Power Tour, traveling every leg of the tour.
Lot #428 is a very special, one-off custom 2011 Ford Mustang coupe that symbolizes hope during challenging times. The car was built to demonstrate the quality of speed gear and craftsmanship by Arizona companies to stimulate the local economy. It will be sold to benefit Bennett’s House, a place where parents experiencing the trauma of having a newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Scottsdale Health Care North can live while their children are cared for in the ICU. Services are free of charge for deserving families recommended by the hospital.
The Mustang GT 5.0 churns out over 550 horses thanks to a Kenne Bell Supercharged high performance engine package backed by a 6-speed close ratio manual transmission and a Centerforce clutch multi-disk high performance clutch assembly. Under the stylized paint from Auto Art Studio, the menacing sheet metal lurks an Eibach coilover suspension and Baer multi-piston calipers on the front with huge competition discs all around.
The Chip Miller Charitable Foundation (CMCF) will sell a 1973 Chevrolet Corvette coupe (Lot #413) in Scottsdale. The car was donated by San Diego Classic and Muscle Cars of Escondido, Calif. Miller was well-known and loved in the Corvette community. He was co-founder of Corvettes at Carlisle and Carlisle Events in Pennsylvania. In March 2004, he died from a little known disease called amyloidosis. Amyloidosis is rare, and the exact cause is often unknown. The disease occurs when substances called amyloid proteins build up in the organs. CMCF was formed shortly after Miller died to create awareness of this disease and raise money for educational and research purposes.
The red with black T-Top coupe features a matching numbers original L48 350cid V8 with an automatic transmission, factory air-conditioning, power steering and brakes, tilt and telescoping wheel. The survivor style car has less than 86,700 original miles. The Corvette was recently serviced when new brake calipers were added and a thorough detail was given.
Homegrown
Created by car enthusiasts for car enthusiasts, a limited edition 2011 Rally Fighter street legal desert racer (Lot #710) will be offered to bidders. One of 2000 built, this is the only production vehicle to be created specifically for the American Southwest. It is also the only ride to openly share all its body and chassis data to help make modifications easier. The Rally Fighter will be sold to raise money for Cox Charities. The charity is committed to building, strengthening and investing in metropolitan and rural Arizona communities by raising and granting funds and mobilizing giving and selfless service.
