1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS L89 Coupe to be sold by Mecum Auction

The Mecum Auction at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois on October 3-5 will be the setting when a very popular 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS L89 Coupe goes across the block. While many Camaros exist, this is an especially fine example of one of America’s most popular cars. In the Camaro, Chevrolet had a boulevard winner and they added to their customer base by developing a performance car that took a backseat to none of its competitors of the era.

This Camaro features a very rare 375 horsepower 396 big block engine with aluminum heads. In 1969, only 311 Camaros had the L89 option, which was based on the L78 396. The engine features an 11:1 compression, a high-lift sold lifter camshaft, heavy-duty valve train, 4-boltmain bearings and a Holley yielding 800-cfm through a cross-flow aluminum manifold. This Camaro follows the minimalist philosophy to great effect, with its Daytona Yellow finish and standard black interior. A numbers-matching example, it retains its original X66-code block, aluminum heads, M21 transmission and 12-bolt rear end. It has been restored to exacting standards and the main drivetrain has been returned to its original state, pleasing discerning collectors.

While 311 similar Camaro L89 Camaros were manufactured during the 1969 model year, most examples headed for the drag racing tracks and were devoid of most options. Needless to say, the attrition rate was high during competition and to find such a pristine fully restored example is rare indeed. The cars garnered much success on the tracks, but finding a surviving example, with the original block no less, is unusual these days and this car will be a favorite with bidders and fans alike. This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS L89 Coupe is another Mecum Main Attraction of an estimated 800 collectible classics that will attract a crowd of thousands to the 13th Annual Mecum St. Charles, Illinois Auction, October 3 - 5, 2008 at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, IL.
