Rare Red and Gold 1966 Shelby GT350H Mustang Coming to Mecum St. Charles, IL Auction

The Mecum Auction at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois on October 3-5 will be the place where this Red and Gold 1966 Shelby GT350H will cross the block. Although selling a fleet of vehicles to a car rental company is hardly an unusual thing in the automotive business, nothing can quite be termed “normal” when it involves Carroll Shelby, as it did in 1966 when Shelby struck a deal with Hertz Corporation. The car around which the Shelby - Hertz deal was built was none other than the GT350, a barely-detuned street version of the race car that won the 1965 SCCA B/Production championship.

800 of the 1,000 Mustangs were given that famous Black and Gold livery, but SAAC Registry research indicates that White, Red, Green and Blue cars were built in quantities of approximately 50 each. These cars are of special interest to collectors, and the Red 1966 Hertz Shelby offered here is one of those exclusive cars.

Built with a K-code 289/306 HP V-8 and a rare 4-speed and prepared for delivery to Hertz in late 1965 by J.D. Ball Ford in Miami, the car was returned in January of 1967 to Ball, who sold it to Steve Barbieri of Fort Lauderdale. Its ownership history is fully documented. It won the Concours Driven Class at the 1994 Mustang Club of America Nationals and appeared at SAAC 19 the same year. The car is registered with the SAAC.

Rare, correct, well documented and with Hertz bona fides, this Red and Gold 1966 Shelby GT350H is an extremely valuable reminder of an improbable partnership that fascinates to this day. For more details on this car, visit the Mecum website.

The Red and Gold 1966 Shelby GT350H is another Mecum Main Attraction of an estimated 800 collectible classics that will attract a crowd of thousands to the 13th Annual Mecum St. Charles, Illinois Auction, October 3 - 5, 2008 at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, IL.
