Mecum’s Kansas City Spring Auction Achieves More Than $8.6 Million In Sales
Mecum Auctions’ annual spring auction in Kansas City, Mo., held this past weekend yielded strong results as one of Mecum’s most consistent sales. With a 65 percent sell-through rate and $8,678,668 in sales, the three-day auction demonstrated its continued appeal to the Midwest enthusiasts and beyond. Of the 574 cars that crossed the block, 370 were scooped up by eager buyers among a full crowd of bidders, sellers and spectators.
The all-indoor auction held at Bartle Hall in the Kansas City Convention Center is a continued favorite for Mecum and its customers, along with its sister auction held annually at the same location in December. With eight football fields worth off contiguous, column-free space, the main exhibition hall is an inviting area for enthusiasts who come to enjoy the auction’s laid-back nature and the Midwest ambiance that abounds.
The auction’s top sale was a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback (Lot S95). As the first Candyapple Red Boss 429 built and sold, the car demonstrated its desirability with a $260,000 hammer price. Offered complete with comprehensive ownership history and the original build sheet, KK #1238 is documented as one of the first 50 hand-built prototype 429s. The second-highest sale came in the form of a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window Coupe (Lot F198). Its instantly recognizable split rear window appearing for just one model year, these Corvettes are always a hot commodity. The restored, Red-on-Red example that crossed the auction block in Kansas City brought $107,000.
