1954 Ferrari 375 MM Spider To Be Offered At Auction By Mecum In Monterey

A remarkable lineup of headliners including world-class vintage racers, European sports cars and more is set to rock the Mecum auction block at this year’s Daytime Auction in Monterey, Calif., Aug. 14-16. Among the 750 classic and collector cars to be auctioned, marques from around the world will be represented with offerings from Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Duesenberg and beyond, all neatly lining the greens of Del Monte Golf Course at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa.

Headlining the impressive lineup is a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Spider (Lot R202) by Pinin Farina. According to various sources, Pinin Farina built just 16 open-coachwork 375 MM cars, and it was in early 1954 that this Pinin Farina-bodied Spider, chassis no. 0362AM, left the Ferrari factory destined to rule the race track.

With a true racing pedigree, including overall wins in no less than four major racing events and top finishes at several others, 0362AM was originally purchased by Southern California construction magnate Anthony Parravano. The car’s complete ownership history since is known and well-documented having been raced by some of the sport’s most memorable drivers at some of the most recognized tracks in America. Today, 0362AM is set to be offered for sale for the first time in 46 years after residing in a single collection owned by two retired California college professors. A spectacular restoration by the car’s dedicated owners, Charles Betz and Fred Peters, allows the car to shine in concours-ready condition. 0362AM will forever be marked in history as the most successful car in Scuderia Parravano’s brief but dramatic reign over West Coast sports car racing in the 1950s. She is now positioned to embark on the next chapter in that history. Now as then, 0362AM is both an aesthetic and mechanical masterpiece that will enchant in any setting, from the Cavallino Classic, Villa d’ Este and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Colorado Grand or California Mille, and on to the track at Monterey’s Motorsports Reunion and countless other vintage racing events.

Presented in August of 2013 at the Carmel Concours on the Avenue, 0362AM was awarded Best of Show, further demonstrating that whatever the venue, 0362AM and her fortunate new owner will find a place of honor ready and waiting.

Other auction stars include Peter Revson’s 1972 McLaren M20 Can-Am (Lot R200), a 1976 Porsche 934/935 IMSA El Salvador (Lot R206), an ACD-certified Category 1 original 1930 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Berline Convertible (Lot R228), a preservation-class 1961 Ferrari 250 Series II Cabriolet (Lot R226), more than one 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing (R124), Paul Reinhart’s 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Tanker Race Car (Lot R229) and a 1968 Shelby Turbine Indy Car (Lot R201), to name a few.
