Commissioned by the English Pianist, Cyril Smith, this Rolls Royce began its life with a coach built, Windovers body. Delivered in January of 37, the Cyril enjoyed the car for a good portion of his life before the car changed hands and eventually made its way to America. By the mid 70s Dr. G.W. Beckett had purchased the car and was looking to restore the car. Around this period, Bob Schaffner of the Phantom III society had located an original and untouched, all aluminum, J.S. Inskip Limousine body that was mated to the chassis of Dr.Becketts car. When completed, the car was so nice that Mr.Schaffner then purchased the car!
Presently the PIII features the one off aluminum body by J.S. Inskip, and is finished in jet black. The paintwork that is deep and highly polished to a mirror finish. The aluminum body is adorned with very subtle scalloped rear wings, and the absence of the center divider, which is extremely rare. The swooping exterior is complemented by the exceptional brightwork that covers a great deal of the car. All including the grillwork, flying lady, Lucas headlamps, wheel covers, and so on. The custom interior features a Black Leather Chauffers compartment, and an Amethyst cloth rear passenger area with woodwork by Madera throughout. The lack of a divider truly sets the car apart from others.
The current owner commissioned an exhaustive frame-off restoration by marquee experts including a Robert Jefferson, for a full rebuild of the aircraft-inspired, 60 degree, 24 Valve, V12 engine. The photo-documented work includes all receipts and service records and will be included with the purchase. The car starts quickly and drives beautifully, having been thoroughly maintained since restoration.
